Back in the 70s, my wife and I were invited to a party hosted by an slightly older shipmate. I was E-5 and the rest were E-7 and E-8s Kind of unusual for a second class petty officer to hang out with Chiefs and Senior Chiefs, but we went anyway. Next to the front door was a small table with a near empty fishbowl, except for a few sets of keys. I was in the habit of attaching my keys to my belt, so I passed it by. They separated us intentionally and the women flirted with me while the guys flirted with my wife. We were very young and had never been away from our hometown and one nothing about the swinger lifestyle. It dawned on me with the ladies surrounding me and the guys surrounding her. I had read about "key parties" in Penthouse magazine and figured out what was going on. These were E7, E8 and E9s who had my immediate future in their hands, so making a scene was not an option. I knew about the pineapple deal (but not the other symbols) because pineapple flags got popular to hang outside your house in north and south (especially south) Carolina. Suddenly they had some regular and swinger neighbor cross communication difficulties. Originally it was just a pineapple but now an upside down pineapple so if pineapple flags get popular again there’s no problem communicating what you’re about. Many years and years ago I was stationed in Germany. The wives got most of the bars and red light kicked out of the local town next to the base. Turned out they were running their own red light district with underground illegal bar. The bar happened to be in a basement of one of the housing buildings. Which all but that building didn’t have a basement. The wives would put a bright orange tide box out on their balcony rail to show they were in business. They’d use a mop or door hanger to convey if they were busy at that moment. Eventually they got busted but punishments were the equivalent of making the wife stand in a corner for 5 minutes and think of what she did wrong.

Once on a family camping trip a nice couple stopped by our campfire and invited our parents to stop by their camper after all of us kids went to sleep. When we arrived at camp my mother was decorating outside the camper and this new thing had pineapples on it and most were upside down for what ever reason and I kept just saying it was ugly and she shouldn't put it up. Flash forward several hours after me and my siblings had gone swimming and it's begining to get dark we get back to the camper and dad has a campfire going and along with mom is sitting by the fire with another couple. After changing clothes we all join them and I see mother put the decoration back out after we left. After a few hours the couple left and told our parents to stop by after us kids went to sleep. My sister wanting to investigate figured out where the couple was staying and came back and said they had a big upside down pineapple on top of their camper. We explained to our parents what it meant and that the decoration mom put out was sending the wrong message. They were mortified. After much panic things calmed down and we went to bed... Plot twist our much younger little brother woke my sister and I up scared but couldn't find mom and dad so while my sister sat with him I went to go look for them..... And that was the night we learned mom and dad were swingers and that's the weird reason the pineapples in the decoration were upside down. We thought we were saving our parents, nope. They were not mortified to learn what the pineapple thing ment, they were mortified me and my sister knew. I was 17 and my sister was 19. That was a long long quiet 2 day trip back home. I can sympathise with the older generation (being part of it) 40 years ago, my mother who worked in a school office bought a cute poster.
