An episode of the early tv series ONE STEP BEYOND deals with a man who couldn't be hanged, who, due to current law at the time, wound up being released. He began to think he couldn't be killed since someone later tried to shoot him, but the gun failed. Supposedly based on a true story. Thanks for the posting, so well done (as usual)!!

It often seems that the more indulged a person is, the more let down they feel. I’ve witnessed that curious phenomenon at work many times, and your portrait of John Lee crystalizes it brilliantly. Another wonderful, erudite, exposition. So interesting to hear your reconstruction from a psychological point of view. So often you hear people narrating such stories and making statements such as "why did x do this?" or " it makes no sense that x would do that" as if all human behaviours must be a perfectly logical progression of acts explicable to the onlooker. The human mind is complex and unpredictable thing and people operating under stress, delusion or distress quite often do the opposite of "logical". Your reconstruction perfectly illuminates Lee's growing resentment (unreasonable, certainly, but understandable in a flawed and self-centred human being), why he struck out in anger, how events spiralled out of his control and why he did things in the aftermath that seemed completely illogical and unreasonable. Quite brilliant. I don't know what murder your book is about but you have one guaranteed sale here.

I will do one, Bert - but it will take a little time! I shall see if I can get one done by September.

@@TheyGotAwayWithMurder That would be awesome and very much appreciated as I have poor vision.

One upside to growing older and having a memory thats less reliable, is that I can listen to Mark's essays a second time and it's almost like the first time all over again.

I'm so glad your back. Your channel is a mental escape for me. I am a nurse and I'd have to say humans are the scariest thing I have ever come across. I hope you are well and look forward to more videos. We'll wishes everyone.

@@barbarajohnson3876 👋. I'm many years away from retirement, planned retirement, life is unpredictable. Hope you're well. I've always said when I'm tired of being a floor nurse maybe I'll teach. Idk, id have to go back to school though because I have an AA, an AS, and a BS, and it's my understanding you need a masters or bachelor to teach.

At least a Bachelor's. We r retired in panama, since 2008, and loving it. Stay safe

Thank you very much - I'm so glad you like it! I agree with you - humans are the scariest things - but they can also be the nicest things. We seem to have the widest spectrum between good and bad imaginable.

Congratulations. Another masterpiece of chilling narrative and fascinating twists. Perfect for a dark rainy night! "She was the splodge of jam in the semolina of his life"!!! I wonder how many others hit pause to absorb that phrase. I am 72 and up until that moment had completely forgotten the meaning of that delicious splodge in the otherwise beige tastelesness of the dreaded semolina pudding !!!

Nothing to be embarrassed about. This is classy storytelling in the true-crime genre.

How exciting..congratulations on the book! And your drawings are charming.. what a good hand you have. (As someone who is “hanging” in Tate Liverpool, etc, due to a fine artist ex husband, I claim a tiny bit of authority) This is an absolute masterpiece. Well played you! And kudos on the straight faced delivery, in the “Is he dead yet?” scene! I keep picturing Peter Cook as the vicar. May this be the first of many books. Your “Trollope meets “Beyond The Fringe”” style, is just delightful.

Well - you hang in the Tate, Liverpool?! Marvellous claim to fame! Thanks for your kind words, too - the event of the hanging was, to my mind, the blackest of black comedic scenes!
