The Yorkshire Dales National Park

The Yorkshire Dales National Park

Жыл бұрын

Farming in the uplands of the Yorkshire Dales is challenging, both physically and economically and the management of the Yorkshire Dales National Park by farmers and landowners is intrinsically important to the landscape’s conservation and to protect some of Britain’s rarest habitats and species.
Farms are important rural businesses and employers, and are vital to rural society.
We spent a year following upland hill farmers Stephen Bostock and his 24 year-old nephew Dave Fullerton to understand the challenges of farming here, through the seasons.
Spring - spring is a favourite time of year as everything comes to life and Stephen and Dave prepare for lambing.
Summer - For Dave Fullerton, summer is his favourite time of year, but it's also a very busy time of year especially when up against the weather.
Autumn - Stephen talks about autumn. "The nights get darker, the days are shorter, all the challenges lay ahead. A melancholy time of year in the farming world".
Winter - for Dave winter is definitely one of the hardest seasons on the farm, partly because of the snow and bad weather they get.

Incredible. Just amazing. Farmers are the lifeblood and backbone of rural UK. Thank You. This clearly illustrates how farmers really do care about the land and indeed wildlife. And understand what is required to maintain wildlife and native species. What you are doing is unequalled. Working in all weathers, 24/07...365 days of the year. All seasons and indeed all weathers. So when there is debate about the price of British food, it beggars belief! Farmers, like these two amazing people should be both respected and rewarded in equal measure. From the bottom of my heart ...Thank You. This is real life. Long may it continue. You are incredible.

That's why it is of the utmost importance that the Government enact their proposal to subsidise farmers for doing conservation work. Farmland covers over 72% of the UK get it right and British Wildlife will flourish.

In 1970s, I picked up a book titled: All Things Great and Small by James Herriot!! Ever since, I have been in love with Yorkshire Dales!! I must visit this place if it's the last thing I do!!

This is such a beautiful documentary. I really enjoyed looking into farming life and it gave me a deep respect for the farmers, their dogs, their animals and their beautiful way of life. Thank you.

Brilliant - a way of life not a job - farming. Hard life on the hills. 👏

Wow, you farmers are amazing. Love your dogs, what clever animals . The dales are so beautiful . It’s weird that I watch the seasons there and we are so different down here in the Southern hemisphere. I’m dreading our summer as we have been warned there will be bush fires and extreme heat waves. Up in the 40+ region. Yuck.

I’m from this area, some of my family are actually on this programme, with ancient pathways running through farms it’d be massively inconvenient to do as you suggest. Not to mention that we just raise our children not to bother cattle…
