Props to Jerry for recognizing that he may have been wrong about the far left and moving on. It takes strength to admit when you’ve made a mistake, especially in today’s polarized environment. I’m a huge Seinfeld fan so it’s refreshing to see him focus on comedy again instead of dwelling on critics. Here’s hoping more comedians can follow Jerry's lead and get back to making us laugh!

I'm jot a huge Seinfeld guy, 37 now so I've seen every episode and liked it problem best out of the laugh real era choices. I agree with you that this course correction was awesome, for me, unexpected, and honestly unequivocal. So I'm more of a Jerry fan today than I was yesterday. He's no longer on par with Bill Marr. He is an outlier Most people found Chapelle's jokes funny one of the highest rated show and HATED by internet left, and journos sympathetic to trans issues/rights. Its not about funniness (it matters too but not always) of the jokes but political sensitivities that can cause cancellation because of PR reasons. Political activists leverage this to their advantage on the left and right. Whether you think its good or bad is different matter but your perception of this issue is not correct in my view. That is correct, but to be fair no comedian is saying that critics of their shows should be gagged or not allowed to enter. They're just claiming that some of the criticisms are stupid. which I personally tend to agree with. So, following your same argument, comedians can say whatever they want, critics can say whatever they want about those comedians, and then the comedians themselves (or other people) can still say whatever they want about those criticisms and so on and so on.

Comedians (anyone who complains about being canceled) are conflating criticism with the fear of being financially affected by it and calling the entire experience 'cancelling'. Comedians aren't owed anyone's time or money and as a result they aren't owed Netflix contracts, showcases at comedy clubs, roles in movies, or airtime on podcasts. All of the attention and money they get is earned with each successful joke. Keep writing jokes that land with an evolving audience and you won't have to worry about being "canceled." But there is a genuine issue with the left and comedy (and I say that as a proud leftist). It's this. (Bear with me because this is a little complicated). Humour often (nearly always) has an element of cruelty. It kind of has to. Being kind is almost never funny. It's the right way to be as a human being but it's not funny. Being cruel can, within limits, be funny. Not sadistic, vindictive cruelty, that just makes people angry. But a little cruelty can sometimes be very, very funny. So what does that have to do with the left and the right? Well (and this is a generalisation, because if I don't generalise a little this will take all day), right-wing politics are more cruel. Cutting welfare, cutting wages, concreting over natural parks, evicting poor people from their homes, denying medical insurance to people with pre-existing health conditions etc etc etc - those ideas are more cruel than (say) giving free school meals to underprivileged kids, or increasing the minimum wage, or paying teachers more, or hiring more nurses. Those policies, leftist policies, are admirable but they're not fertile ground for comedy.

Someone should tell Ana and Cenk that a democratic process is about building a coalition capable of advancing your struggle. It’s about using your ideas and needs to drive the change you seek, even when the available choices seem imperfect. We would be in a better position today if TYT had embraced this concept and supported Hillary’s candidacy. Instead, they chose a different path, which contributed to Trump’s victory, ultimately pushing their own ideals further away and leaving everyone worse off.

Chapelle was and is hilarious. He didn't attack transgender people. He made jokes. All you folk laugh at every other joke he tells about every other race, gender, age, sexual preference but you caught feels about transgender jokes because it's new to popular culture. I went to a Chapelle show this summer and one of his openers was a transgender woman. She said, "don't be upset with Dave because you aren't comfortable with who YOU are". Wise words from a person who has been through it!

FINALLY, it's been a looong time, but Ana finally said something I completely agree with: Cenk IS a much better person than her. Cenk is dedicated to the struggle, it's WHO HE IS. For Ana--real talk--she comes off as someone who fetishized "the left," who basked in the honorable posture of being a lefty, but, with advancing age, it's gotten too hard, the bloom is off the rose, and her only REAL goal now is a cushy financial life off in either some gated community or some remote corner of the earth with her husband & dog. That's her goal now & she's CLEARLY making the necessary socio-political flip-flops to reap the financial rewards to effectuate that desired reality more sooner than later. The problem is she's gaslighting & twisting minds (the same minds Cenk is attempting to enlighten) in her spiral into cocooned oblivion.

So often listening to Ana is like listening to a present-day teenager who knows only what has occurred in society since her teen years and is altogether ignorant of what "happened before my time," moreover, does not even have a lucid understanding of what is taking place in her time. "Cenk, the left has inhibited the art comedy." No, Ana, the left has not shut down comedy. Shutting down comedy was what occurred at the hands of puritanical citizens, legislators, and the enforcers of laws that criminalized words, i.e., courts of law and the police, in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, with the result that comedians were arrested, imprisoned and fined (e.g., Marty Wayne, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin, the latter three were singularly talented, unlike whining Seinfeld whose overrated tv show had canned laughter). Right-wing, puritanical censorship of art, not the protestations of people whom you erringly and carelessly refer to as "the left," but are, in fact, simply people of standard bourgeois values among which is the middle-class rule that comedians must abide politesse at all times when telling jokes. They are no more leftist than you, who think that there ought to be more prisons in California because criminals in San Francisco are breaking into people's expensive cars. In fact, Ana, real censorship, not make-believe censorship of the type you attribute to the left and that Seinfeld complained of for years, has always existed in America from the 19th Century to the present day and it is and has always been the work of the right not the left. You would benefit from less opining and more reading on the subject of obscenity laws in America. D.H. Lawrence, James Joyce, Margaret Anderson, Henry Miller, Barney Rossett, are just several artists and publishers who had legitimate grounds for contemning the real harm done them by censorship (today we would say "cancelling"). Seinfeld and his mediocre ilk are not faced with a pervasive condemnation of their comedic schtick and certainly not with the criminalization of it. Enough of how difficult the "left" makes it for comedians to feel unrestricted in their choice of subject matter and words today. But if these times were as oppressive for comedians as you assert them to be and talented comedians, such as Carlin, Pryor, and Bruce were alive today, they would get round the left's purportedly oppressive restrictions with a cleverness redolent of the Florida high school valedictorian, Zander Moricz, who delivered his valedictory address without uttering the banned word "gay" but nevertheless spoke of being gay through his metaphorical references to his curly hair. Like Zander Moricz, the most talented comedians have wit sufficient to make their point despite the imposed restrictions on their speech. It is his lack of talent that led to Seinfeld's insufferable kvetching for so long about being stymied by the left. But at least he, a man of the most offensive political points of view, has come round to seeing that the "extreme left has not done anything to inhibit the art of comedy. " And, notwithstanding his hyperbole (the extreme left in America, that comprise an infinitesimal percentage of Americans, are not in the least interested in Seinfeld's comedy), he is right. But you could sooner convince Donald Trump that climate change is real than you could convince Ana that the "extreme left has not done anything [of considerable effect] to inhibit the art of comedy. The pentimento of Ana has always exposed the Republican beneath the ill-at-ease and pliable (easily bent to the right) left-of-center facade.
