One of the things I love about the US is the fact that ancient enmities can be faced and people can reevaluate the situation. I live in Silicon Valley, and one of my favorite things is the diversity. My H, who is a software engineer, worked at a company where his working group included large contingents of both Turk and Armenian immigrants. Our next-door neighbors are Palestinian, and they've become friends of ours. Our children played together. My synagogue has been part of a Jewish-Muslim discussion group which has been in existence for 40+ years. My children had Muslim friends all through school. It's not so much that these things can work global magic, but it's a good first step to recognize the basic shared humanity when so many demonize others. Trump has a very distorted view of cultural relations as they currently exist in the US, and he seems to be trying his best to shatter the American values that underly them.

Well, there's your problem - you want or expect _understanding_ to be generated. It's important not to just assume that this is going make anything work. The whole operation doesn't actually require any understanding, for anyone. It only functions with a weird mixture of hype, fear and attention. It starts with someone having a real fear they're not getting enough attention. From there, hype is used to create a false fear in others, which generates attention that goes back to the hype generator. It both feels fear _and_ creates more hype about more false fears, and on it all goes from there. However, add _understanding_ to any stage of that cycle, and the whole machine could break down!
