Refusing to date someone because their beliefs are too different than yours is not wrong. I wouldn't date a Republican, a Christian Scientist, a Flat Earther, or a Scientologist. Refusing someone equal rights(entry into the country, marriage, etc) because of something they didn't even choose (race, national origin, sexual orientation, disability) is very wrong, and these Republicans who are crying are conflating these two issues in a way that is not logical, and for the most part I think they are crying about it just to play the victim.

My skin doesn't allow me the naive luxury of trusting and dating an out right Trump supporter. There are black people who have gone missing, assaulted and or publicly humiliated by those who would shake our hands with a fake smile with one of their hands, and have a weapon behind their back with the other hand. The kind that will be cool with you until you express any emotion that's deeper than jive dancing with a painted Sambo smile on our faces like we're in some menstrual show that has people in black face. Otherwise we run the risk of them calling the cops on us and lying that they feel threatened...knowing how a lot of the police react to poc. In these times you can't befriend a cop because it seems a lot of Klan type people are being encouraged to sign up and be a cop. I'd rather not risk my life on giving them the benefit of the doubt that they don't have hidden agendas. I found out some years ago that one of my close friends was a trump supporter but then her and her husband were drinking the Fox news kool-aid. The sad part is she's white and her husband is Puerto Rican. She'd speak hate speech about Latinos and she's married to one. And yet, her husband wouldn't even flinch about it. He'd say shady things too. And I knew them before the political circus that came into town with Trump. These are the types of people that would feed a hungry stranger and give them help or clothes if need be. Within the whole Jan. 6th trouble and more coverage of Trump's hate speeches and alignment with racist groups, they walked away from it and now are heavily back to reestablishing their walk with God. I told her once how being her friend after so long, and then coming to her house to see a paper clipping of Trump on her fridge really hurt, because of what he stands for. There's only so much head burying you can do, because eventually you have to face the truth about that fanbase. Right wing terrorist groups storming the Capitol with Nazi flags and noose poles does not sit well with me. I stopped talking to her for awhile. Now that they are walking with God, they've also changed their affiliation to Independent. Pics and drawings from her grandkids sit on the fridge. Now again, I've known that family for a long time, so I knew their kindness before hand. But me trying to befriend a right wing stranger....I couldn't, the moment I know. That goes for poc who drink their kool-aid. Trusting them can be dangerous to the community. Those that don't know or heed the warnings of our history or doomed to repeat it and cause a downfall of their own people.

I’m Australian. My favourite candidate for Potus would have been Bernie. I dated a “conservative”. He was selfish, and mostly antagonistic. If we discussed political style issues, I could, if I had the energy, unpack the conversation and make it obvious we actually agreed, but our language framed things differently. But. It was exhausting. I’m a single mother of two high needs children. I’m on “welfare”. I can’t work enough to pay our bills. I volunteer to pay back to the community that pays my way. But I’m pro welfare. He was not. He was (likely still is) a selfish misogynist. He enjoyed my liberal/gentle/patient attitudes towards him, but thought he was the only one who should enjoy that. Furthermore republican politicians regularly argue against us participating in the military (because we're too weak), participating in sports (because we're too strong), and from using the bathroom (ironic considering more republicans have been arrested in the bathroom for sexual assault than trans people have), even passing laws in multiple places to that effect. Then they also have the audacity to whine when it backfires on them. For instance, in Texas a trans guy (female-to-male) was forced by their laws to participate with his schools girl's wrestling team instead of the boys like he wanted. Then shocker of shockers, he dominated the girls division. And these are the same politicians that republican voters vote for. How exactly am I supposed to befriend someone who supports those kinds of things? And that's just the stuff the effects me personally. We haven't even gotten to their corruption or warmongering or sexism.

@White Privilege as a white man I've never once felt that way. I'm not very sensitive though. I tend to frequent a few businesses owned by people of color in my area and have chosen even to engage people of color as friends in my life, so I don't simply see them as 'nonwhites' the moment I see one. I know exactly how poorly they understand the world, and that their political choices are directly connected to their sense of white, “rugged individualist” identity. I actually heard one of them say that before the Jewish people were given the place that was previously Palestinian in the 1940’s that the Palestinian people there were uncivilized migrants living in tents! It’s not the long distance. Covid and quarantine set up perfect indoctrination camps. Everyone was in their silos and couldn’t interact with others. I identify as more of an independent leaning toward Democrat and I had a friend who was a hard-line conservative. He spent his days on Breitbart's website and watching Fox News and was a full supporter of trump, but we would hang out, have dinner and go to the movies on a rather regular basis. We had some disagreements and a whole lot of debates about all sorts of topics. Sometimes I found it draining and other times it was almost fun. Neither of us changed the other's mind, but it was a little mental exercise. The friendship ended after the election of 2020 because that's when my friend said farewell to reality. I can have a debate with a dissenting opinion, but we need to at least agree on what is reality first as a baseline. He was convinced the election was stolen and went on and on with all the talking points of the time and I then realized I couldn't continue on because there was no agreement on what was real anymore. He was in trump's fantasy land and I can't imagine how further down the rabbit hole he as gone since then, and I don't care to find out. I'd like to think he's come to his senses by now, but that seems like a far-off hope.

You’re probably a guy or you haven’t bothered to see how far the talks against women’s rights have gotten in conservative circles. Not only do they not believe in abortion, they don’t believe in birth control (for women), equal pay, and voting rights. They’ve even started questioning the education of women, because too many women are becoming independent and don’t feel the need to be with men. Yet at the same time, they make excuses for men who leave their “stay at home wives.” And vote against anything that would allow a woman to raise her child effectively if she gets dumped. That’s basically saying that women should only be an accessory to what men want or need at the moment. Look at all the toxic blue pill red pill mess, where men say they never want to settle down or get married. But these same men get upset when successful women feel the same way. Look at all the KZbin channels where they bring women on to talk down to them and tell them they should accept any man if the women is successful. But successful men should avoid being in relationships because they’ll get used. Yeah, in America where there’s no social safety net or healthcare system (we have profit care, not health care), women are realizing they don’t want to be attached to men who think to take away what few rights we have left. Some of these men even complain about not being able to touch women “you know slap or pinch a stranger’s behind.” Or be able to get women drunk and sleep with them. I’m a women and I feel women should guard themselves and know their limits, but I also know about spiked drinks and slipping drugs into drinks. So even though I don’t drink, I never pick back up a drink if I sit it down. And even though I feel women should guard themselves, I don’t blame them for the men who intentionally prey on them.

I consider myself very moderate, but with every minute that the Republicans keep talking crap I move more left. I would never date someone who supports Trump. NEVER! I don't have any friends who are Trump supporters, per se, but would vote for him over a Democratic presidential candidate. I've tried to talk to co-workers who were Trump supporters, but it became clear that that topic should not come up again if we were to keep working together. This is very tough. We can no longer have productive conversations over policies when one side wants to completely eliminate anyone from the conversation/country who isn't white. How do you have any kind of meaningful relationship with someone like that!?!

My theory is that Republicans, on average, are more likely to see politics as a sporting event. They don't always draw the connection between the politicians and policies they support with their actual real life. Case in point the southern Texas reps. that were shocked when the neighbors they really liked get deported. Democrats tend to make that connection more readily, in some cases too much, and so are more likely to take someones political stance more personally. Both views can be taken too far, and how far that is can vary depending on the circumstances. As to whether or not it is ok in this circumstance? Again it depends on the specifics, but if this does seem to be one time in history when, alot more often than usual, it is appropriate to refuse to associate with the group. Rep politicians are currently at an all time low in terms of integrity and morals, as well as basic respect for American institutions. Supporting them as a general policy is itself indefensible. Not saying you can't support specific politicians on specific issues, but supporting all of them on general principle has reached a level of moral irresponsibility. (more so than usual, supporting someone based solely on politcal party with no understanding of their actual positions is always irresponsible.)

It is also worth noting that they are tending to support policies that don't affect *them.* It's easy for a GOP voter to say "Ban this group" or "Take away that person's rights!" because it's not affecting *them.* Then like clockwork, they're shocked, shocked I say, when those policies finally bit them in the ass, and they react with total disbelief that something they supported ended up being bad for *them.* A good example of this is probably gonna be a lot of astounded Republicans when they discover that they won't be able to get abortions either, if SCOTUS overturns RvW.

True story - I was driving through a small rural town a few years back when this new pick up with an elderly white male driver pulled up alongside me. Today, maybe more than ever, a person's political allegiance is indicative of their basic decency, intellect, and critical thinking abilities. I truly question if you can be both a good person and an intelligent person and still support Trump and today's Republican party - maybe one or the other, but not both, and those two characteristics are numbers one and two on my priority list in terms of a partner. So no, I likely wouldn't consider dating a Republican, not (only) because we wouldn't get along, but because it's an indicator that they're either an asshole or not real bright. Or both.

So, someone who does not want to address injustices in society and believes it is perfect because it is perfect for THEM, that may indicate a lack of empathy for others. It can implicate how safe you or your will loved ones will be around that person or if you have children, how they will be treated. For example, a person who would love and accept their LGBT children for instance will have a very hard time coupling with a person who wants to send them to a conversion camp.
