My boyfriend has told me that hates the fact that I don't feel safe in certain situations. I told him, that's the reality of being Black in America. We don't feel safe because America has never been a safe place for us. It's highly likely that in our lives we will face injustices and traumas that last a lifetime just because of the color of our skin.

The truth can be hard to accept. You teach your children that police are an unjust part of a racist system. They believe you. They're scared. They get pulled over by police after committing some crime that their group commits at higher statistical rates than any other demographic, and get belligerent and combative with police. They don't just show their license and cooperate. They're in a panic because what you told them about police. They resist arrest, assault a cop and run or try to pull a weapon and end up being shot by police. Then you say it's proof of the racism you taught your kids about. It's not the system, it's not the police, it's behavior.

There is also a nullification of physical pain felt by black people. Wanda Sykes was told to take Tylenol for pain after a double mastectomy. Amber Ruffin has talked about how mortified her European husband was when the police came upon them and accused her of being a prostitute. A black doctor cannot carry his medical bag down the street. This starts in childhood and continues for the lifetime of black people. It's shameful.

I don't have any experience with the black side of this equation, but I do think the disparity is pulling in both directions with white people being treated like they're still children just learning what's right and wrong well into their 20s (like you can see this in the cases of white college age men being in court for rapes they were accused to have committed) Also it absolutely broke my heart to hear that young boy talking about how he pictures himself in a coffin. No child should have to have that trauma and thought pattern.

I'm seeing comments here that are either missing the point or purposefully muddying the water. These are children, they want to play with their friends, and they want to be just normal kids. They are not being given the chance to be awkward teenagers trying to make their way through life like a lot of us had the chance to do. The point is, even if they are on the level, they don't have the same chance as others. These are factors outside of how they conduct themselves. There isn't a blank slate to start with, and that is part of the issue here. No one is justifying children causing problems, the conversation is about not looking at a 10-year-old as a threat, or that a darker complexion equals a greater threat. There is no benefit to anyone, preventing others from being able to live, grow, and become their best selves.

Hearing that little lad saying he sees himself in a coffin sometimes is heartbreaking. Eleven years old and he's thinking that? Just... I don't have the words. I was hypersexualised as a very young girl (12, tall, slim, large breasts, and an profuse blonde ringlets) and I always felt adult men leering at me, talking to one another about what they'd like to do to me, in any given situation. It was terrifying, being a shy, naive, nerdy type. Constant anxiety is crippling for a child and goes on well into adulthood. It's no wonder that little boy is traumatized by being treated in a way that he isn't developed enough to cope with. The adults are at fault, and that is a tragedy. Adults are supposed to be trustworthy and part of protecting our young ones. I'm a fierce Mama bear now and will not put up with this nonsense.

We as Black people are fatigued and inured from the fact that some of our fellow Americans and police kill us (Our Sisters, our Children, our Brothers) without the same penalty warranted for killing a deer out of season. I still remember the scenes in the old Michael Moore documentary where a little grade one black boy brought a gun to school to show his friends and accidentally shot one of his friends. People sent in letters saying this child should be hung and there were public calls for his execution. Yet, upon investigation, they found he had access to a gun because the kids single mother was too poor to live on her own and was forced to move in with her brother, who, unbeknownst to her, had a gun. She couldn't be home to find the gun, because she was on welfare and at that time, she was in a work for welfare program. She had to leave the house for her jobs before her kids left for school in the morning and got home after them in the afternoon. I still remember the scene where the cop related about how the kid, while drawing a picture at the cop shop, asked when he could go see his friend. The kid didn't even understand that death meant he would never see her again. Yet, people were outraged that a tiny child wasn't going to be executed by the court system. That was decades ago and America is so much worse now than then.

I'm a 74 year old white lesbian who did as much as I could to help end racism, sexism, warmongering and anti gay/lesbian hatred. In my small, white community I was vilified for hanging out with Nicaraguan and Ethiopian exchange students, at home and at school. Through the late 60s and 70s we fought for freedom and change, and laws were changed. The new laws around LGBTQ issues took a little longer. We thought we'd done great things, lives were improving. But laws never change the hearts of people who hate. It only takes one person like Trump to be a tipping point that gives haters the excuse to come back out into the open. Of course he's not behind the state of policing. That's been a steady growth of over-militarization and training, and no time spent hiring people who care about the welfare of people and communities. We can look at the last 45 years when the right wing got scared of how the sane people were opening up the culture to acceptance of people 'not like us'. That's when they started figuring out ways to bring the country back to their view - that the 'other' or non-white cis-het folks are to be feared. Unfortunately the view among some that the 'other' - however it's defined - is predominant around the world. It's not right by any means. I'm only saying it's been that way for a long long time. Scientists have discovered that haters and carers are different neurologically, as if the two brain types evolved side by side. It's a difference that mat never be reconciled. Sometimes people's minds change when someone close to them crosses the border between the hater and the hated. Not always, but sometimes. White people, women and LGBTQ folks need to fight more effectively. Marches are fine, but I realized a long time ago that they tend to harden the ideas of the oppressors more than open them. I think sit-ins and work stoppages are more effective. Isn't that what the Republicans in the House are doing now?

As a black kid from a working class family in America, you have 2 strikes automatically against you, so you have to work harder than a white kid from a working class family to try to escape it, and because of class/money status, it even makes it more difficult. And many kids like this are forced into being an adult, because of pressures they face. I'm white, but my entire life (67yo), I have seen racism coast to coast in this country. The talk that folks are not racist no more is a fantasy, this entire country and its institutions breed classism and racism since the start. In fact, you can't have this type of capitalism society of dog eat dog exploitative capitalism without racism and classism. I always hear the argument, to look at some famous wealthy black person, and what they have accomplished, as a show that racism has faded away, which is a lame explanation/conclusion. In fact, today, it appears, because of this new neoliberal classism, and a far right wing culture (which America is, this talk that America is the pinnacle of social and racial liberation, is more nonsense), the racism and killings of black people by law enforcement, is even getting worse than it was in the 1960s, when I was a kid. BTW, Happy Juneteenth, keep the history strong and true, because this country's institutions are trying to whitewash and eliminate that too 🟪

I agree with you, but maybe don't start your post with "as a black kid...". Starting your post like that, coupled with your profile pic clearly being an old white guy, gives the first impression that you're a right-wing troll. Or maybe you should now that I think of it; presenting as a troll would help reach those right-wingers who invariably post early comments on these videos, thereby bursting their bubbles.

@@Above-Reproach so, I saw the other comment you made on this vid and there was something that didn't make sense to me: in that comment you seemed to express that establishment Democrats were part of the problem with racism and classism in America, but here you seem to be apathetic to racism. What is your opinion on racism and classism? Curious 🤔.

Sometimes these issues need to be reported. Sometimes these issues need to just be discussed. Black people don’t usually get spaces to openly discuss the obvious shared experience. Living with an obvious consistent undertone is frustrating enough. Feeling like you can’t discuss it without ridicule or a racist hateful response is even harder. Black reporters or celebrities usually act like they’re immune or exempt from the “shared experience”. Sad but nice you guys allowed yourself to be personal and real about how you’re affected by the stories you cover. No way any child any color deserves dark thoughts like that or to experience such horrible trauma so early in life. Humans can be so terrible sometimes. A lot of examples in these comments. My heart broke for the little guy. Every one deserves a chance at a healthy mindset.

The homeowner thought that the young white woman sitting in the passenger seat was a threat. The driver was her boyfriend who is a white boy wearing glasses, very skinny and looking like a total nerd, not threatening in any manner. The woman or anyone for that matter exited the car. Police met with Reed and her attorney the next day, and her attorney again on Saturday. On Monday, Reed verbally admitted to police that "she was responsible for the harassment and the threats over the internet," the report says. Police notified the station's news director, no charges were filed and the case was closed. But it wasn't over. Taylor's attorney, Carl Singley, sent Christopher Blackman, vice president of news at Channel 10, a letter soon after Reed's admission asking the station to "take appropriate actions to protect Ms. Taylor from any further harassing and threatening conduct by Ms. Reed." Eventually, staffers learned Reed no longer worked there.....
