So...big question here: Majesty or BFR? I am really wanting a JPXI, what's your vote?
@ThiagoCamposOfficial4 жыл бұрын
I AB`ed all 4 of my Petruccis yesterday. JP7 (2005), JP6 (roasted maple), JP13 and the Majesty. The Majesty feels like a luxury sports car in comparison to the others. It just feels lighter (great on the back/shoulders live), sleeker, well balanced, and "out of your way". You almost forget it's human-made, and made of wood actually, it's that polished. However, at this point I have been having tuning stability issues with it. Even just bending and digging into notes slightly detunes the individual strings in a way that bothers me. It feels like its joints are "sticking" the strings way more than on my other Music Man guitars (and I've owned over 15-20 at this point in the last 2 decades). I will order some Nut Sauce and see if it sorts it out, but I`m surprised a 3k+ guitar would have such issues straight out of the factory. Other than that, it's perfect, very enjoyable to play! I was surprised to see/feel that among my other guitars, my original JP7 (in the beautiful discontinued Lava Pearl) was the most brootal one. It's chuggy and bouncy and so agressive it's awesome, even if not using the 7th string. Definitely the most metal of the bunch! Of the other 6s, my preference is for the JP13. Might just be the pickups, but it sound heavier, chunkier in the lows. It also feels very easy to play, a faster guitar than a regular JP, IMO. Probably my favorite neck shape, that radius feels the most comfortable to me. It's less bright than the Majesty but I like how it sits in the mix. The JP6 soundwise, tho my least favorite, still sounds AWESOME, and I've used it as my main guitar for years. What I love about it is the right arm scoop. That still might be the most comfortable place to sit your forearm on a guitar ever. It also has a beautiful birds-eye maple roasted neck, and nice dark ebony fretboard which is my favorite. Never tried the JPXI but I'm guessing it would rank closer to the JP13 with maybe a different neck shape? I'd say go for the Majesty, but make sure you play it and check its tuning stability before you dish out that amount of cash on a high-end instrument. Might have been my luck of the draw, but that's my only experience with it so I hope it helps! Cheers and enjoy your guitar, it`ll be amazing regardless, hard to go wrong with MM.

Not sure if you've seen this, but it's everything in one spot: blog.music-man.com/artists/john-petrucci-signature-guitar-buying-guide/ I've been playing for 29 years, I am a huge JP fan, and this will be my first MM guitar. My current rig is a bit of a Frankenstein, but it sounds real good, and it's in stereo through two 412 cabs. I should honestly have more gear, but I didn't really start getting super into gear until the last 6 years or so. I mean, I always had good gear, my first two tube amps were a 5150 and Peavey Ultra 60. I also have a Spider Valve 100w head, which was designed by Bogner and is actually sort of rare...but the power section on that is real good. The preamp sucks ass, but if you patch a good preamp through the loop it's solid....it's actually very Recto like. My daily driver has been a 1993 ESP KH-2, which is the 31st one ever made, #032. I've been playing that pretty exclusively for the last 8 years. It needs a fret job...lol. Anyway, it has a pretty curved board with a 12" radius. I don't mind it one bit, it's like a comfy pair of shoes or jeans. After looking at that chart and with your much respected input, it seems JP is super happy with the 17' radius, every guitar since the 13 has that fretboard radius. I am GRATEFUL that they still make the JPXI, it's a survivor...lol. All the other JPxx models have been discontinued. Hopefully this crap will pass and I can sit down with a few models, as I can only afford one. Choices.....choices. Here's my issue: EBMM doesn't officially make the exact guitar I want. If I had my way, I would get a 17" radius, ebony board BFR with a finish very similar to the Tiger Eye. I have about $4k to spend, so the Tiger Eye is definitely on the radar, even if it has to come from Reverb. Here are my main issues: I wish the Majesty didn't have a tilt back headstock, and I love the open look of the 3 way DiMarzio toggles. I've ALWAYS wanted a guitar with the LiquiFire and Crunch Lab pickups. I KNOW they sound good, because they stayed around since the beginning, and I've heard them a million times. I've played two JP series, a Black Sugar JP6 BFR....just like yours, with the roasted maple, and a JP6 BFR burst with rosewood. I was at GC, so I didn't get a true feeling. I also played a Majesty right when it came out. That guitar stood out as the easiest playing and most out of the way guitar ever...like a spaceship. That was also at GC, but I did get a feeling for that. Maybe I should get that Tiger Eye. It's got the violin look in spades, and it's got the easy button built in. I am gonna get out and put a JPXI in my hands and some kind of Majesty again and decide then. This is going to be a lifelong instrument, so all that isn't even an issue. I was really hoping to absolutely love the JPXI and score one for $2k on Reverb, which will leave me enough to grab an Axe FX III so I can finally start recording. I write amazing stuff on a daily basis, and it just disappears forever. Many times I just write a 3 minute song in one take, totally improvised with 5 or 6 dramatically different parts....I NEED to start capturing this, at least for my own sanity. I have the Majesty logo tattooed on my forearm and have seen DT fourteen times now since 1993. I really appreciate your help though....I've been watching you for the past 6 years or so, and you've got my total respect as a badass guitarist. If only I could just have three....lol, it would be SO MUCH easier. Take care bro....later

@@rickfeith6372 hadn`t seen that! Awesome, thanks! They need to update it to 2020 now.

@@rickfeith6372 That's about the best comparison of all the Petrucci signature guitars I've seen, so thanks. But like Thiago said, it needs updating, especially due to the variants of Majesties now available. And no where (that I could find) does it list the scale lengths. (I assume all are 25-1/2", but that spec SHOULD BE LISTED, since it's pretty important, especially for guys coming from other models or makes. It was a big adjustment for me, just the 1/2" longer scale from my PRS had me thinking of reducing the string gauge down to .009's.)
