In 1940 general Charles de Gaulle travelled to the French colonies in North and West Africa. He appealed to the native population of the French colonies. "Please help us in this difficult moment!" He said to them: If you help the motherland, I promise you that France will listen to your wishes when the war is over. To the local population, this sounded as if he wanted to give them some kind of home rule (autonomy), perhaps even independence. Many Africans joined the war. And they made a significant contribution to the war effort. What happened when the war was over? Did general de Gaulle keep his promises? No. This film shows how France responded when veterans from Senegal wanted to remind the French government of the promises which were made in 1940.
