I would like to see a 120 or 140mm monster vs the same size in a slimmer thickness to see how much it effects in smaller builds such as liquid cooled mitx

The gap between the fans and the radiator fins is NOT a waste of space. It acts as a plenum chamber to effectively buffer the airflow between the fan and the fins. This allows much better airflow through the radiator than if the fans were almost touching the fins. it also significantly lowers the noise from the fan blades.

Description was updated to link to previous episodes. That will answer most questions asked. Also, this video is not promotion of DarkSide rads. *facepalm* Any slim rad would yield similar results. I use what I have and what is least expensive for me to get result done.

Good video, but I wish you would have talked about FPI and tested two rads of the same size but with different FPI density. Anyways, keep up the good work ;)

Basically, bigger the rad is the better the temps will be and or at the very least it will take longer for coolant to warm up

The issue is that the cpu you are testing with doesn't even get close to heat soaking the regular 360.. So adding more radiators or thicker radiators gives small benefits n diminishing returns.... This test should be done on like a 2990wx 32 core threadripper overclocked 400-500 watts and possibly 2080ti oc 350-400 watts and THEN the thick boy starts making sense... great video! love these kinds of comparisons

bro check what year it is LOL from that year CPU becoming more and more efficient while GPU is not that power hungry .. now CPU started to become more power hungry specially with GPUs and radiator thickness and size now really matters. Plus its a 80mm thick Rad with a single 2k RPM fan a dual fan at 1.2k RPM bare min. are required for this thick rads.
@bitrage.

@gamertechlive1780 I dunno what year has to do with it... gpus and cpus still use more power then they used too... overall and on average... we have bigger psus because of it... I have a 4090 consuming 800ish watts and a 64 core threadripper consuming 700 watts... they are both much more efficient then cpus used to be but also much more power dense and run hot, expesully when oced

One thing about the 80mm size rads, they were specifically designed to run slow speed fans in push/pull config. 80mm+ is the size at which push/pull actually makes sense. Also mentioned, what were the fin densities on these rads? This can effect whether a high speed or low speed fan will be better? A low speed push/pull config on the Monstaa versus a high speed push on your LP360 might be a better comparison when under load to see if 2x costs really makes sense.

yea but cooler is better than quietness just put a radiator array outside your room so you don't have to hear it lol

86mm thick rad with 3000rpm fans dont forget louder is much more cooler but lower is quiet but its not as cool just wear headphones if a jet is a problem or build a aray of rads with loud high speed fans get a longer tube and stick the rada elsewhere where it wont bother you linus did this with a whole room watercooling setup all if this complaining about noise makes me think you should not be overclocking it

I wish he had done a push/pull comparison aswell, because that's where the monsta really shines. Monsta is not to be used as an alternative to other rads for performance in my opinion. It is made to be used in push/pull configs at low rpms with decent fans ofc. Because of the thickness of the Monsta if you run just push or pull there will be air turbulance inside the rad and the air wont properly flow through it.

Imagine the Monsta 3x180mm rad with six of silverstone's AP182 (2000rpm) fans in push-pull. Nothing would ever touch it.

I saw these videos years ago and I was still surprised to see the Monsta beat out the longer rad, especially knowing that the Monsta has a low fin density of 10fpi vs the thinner rad's 17fpi. ...A FPI difference that large should have been mentioned in the video.

I have a 2 x Monsta 280mm and unless fans are at 1500rpm or higher, the water slowly just gets warmer until thermal throttle (100% load). I'm using Cosairs ML140 pro. They need 1900rpm to work. So its really all or nothing kinda deal. I though bigger rad, bigger slower fans = quieter system. I fuked that right up. (I fuk eveything up).

All very good info. Rather surprized that the monsta wasn't getting a better result but I think it shows the main reason for a thick rad is great performance with the lowest speed fans. Also a little info on why the monsta is more than double the cost is that fact it has 7 G¼ ports as apposed to only two in the LP rads.Very good info thanks.

I wouldn't call a centimeter gap between shroud and fins a waste. It is theoretically a benefit to performance to help reduce fan hub deadzone. And I figure on these ultra-thick rads they wouldn't assume that space is at enough of a premium to cut down. As I see it the gap is a feature, tho the practicality of it is hard to say. A gap on the panel side without fans is truly a waste.

Recently bought an EK 540 (3x180) triple. Haven't got around to installing it yet, though I'm hopeful this degree of area should perform real well, especially after watching this review where area seems to bring the most bang for the buck. :)

If we're given a hot loaf of bread and have no fans to cool it down, simplest way is to cut it into two halves.

so what I took away from this is in most scenarios thick and thin radiators of the same surface area would perform similarly. But in extreme cases with low rpm fans and running 3 blocks the thicker radiator will prevail because of its superior cooling capacity. To be fair ID never run 2 GPUs and 1 CPU off a single 360mm radiator. 1 CPU and 1 GPU max

Having a small issue regarding GPU temps. I have 3570k @4.5 (only 1.12v needed) and a gtx 1070 @ 2126/9100. I use a EKWB XE 240 rad and a alphacool ST30 120mm rad. After 30 min of firestrike extreme i get 59C on GPU while in different videos i see people getting 45-50C on GPU... is my temp too high for watercooling?

Hmmm... comparing a rad's performance with 4 fans versus a rad with 3 fans seems unfair. Also, comparing price without including the cost of that additional fan is doubly unfair. Not a fangirl or anything, but I think there are flaws in your methodology. Also, you did a medium speed and a high speed test, but no low-speed test. What happens if you run the same test @500 RPM? I'll bet the Alphacool's advantage grows even more pronounced.

Over time the monster rad will gain improovement, this is because ther will be air for a long time in the top of the rad and that will be less over time
