It's mainly that it is far from how the original games were, the old one's were a lot more sprawling and you had several ways to complete each mission, the AI were smart and hunted you down when they had spotted you and you were discouraged to engage in combat since you're a thief, not an assassin or something like that. I can recommend you checking out "the dark mod". It's basically the true successor of the thief franchise.

Most people just prefer Dishonored to the remake of Thief. The originals were amazing, I can't say I was surprised when I played it because it was made by the same studio that did the remake of the Tomb Raider games. The first one had a stupid story line and easy to read environment which didn't carry over from the originals.

Most of the fun was in the sidequests which I skipped on my first playthrough, opting for the main story. I think it would have been received better had the whole thing with the zombie-things and the Primal actually been inside of Garret's head instead of having a real mystical reason, mostly because the Asylum level was EPIC

Thief was the original game, dishonored was based heavily off of the first thief. This second game takes some elements dishonored adapted from their own game in the first place. It's still a fairly shitty game though, can't hold a candle to dishonored.
