Hi Harald - lovely work on the restoration of the Duplex 158. I am currently doing similar on a Duplex 159.Do you have any further photos or videos of the restoration? The Thiel is not familiar to me as I usually work on old lathes. I have the servicing manual but the drawings are not detailed enough for taking the machine apart. for example I cannot see how to remove the overarm without taking apart the spindle? Hope you don't mind me asking.

You will find a pretty detailed report at the German "Zerspanungsbude" forum: forum.zerspanungsbude.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=15758 Unfortunately the discussions are in German language, but the photographs could be helpful. Feel free to ask me via e-mail (hfinster at gmx dot de) if you need more help. I can only comment on the 158, but if I remember correctly, you can remove the overarm without removing the horizontal spindle. There is a bearing underneath the cover at the back. Edit: The splined shaft is axially fixed by a washer and a bolt. If you remove this bolt you should be able to remove the overarm. There is a small housing with two gears underneath the overarm. The spline rungs across the top of the pair of gears. You should be able to pull the shaft through.

Hi Harald - Thanks so much for your reply and the very helpful information, I have friends in Austria who can translate for me if google translate isn't enough. The quality on the machine is exceptional but it has been neglected for many years, but hopefully nothing fundamentally wrong@@HaraldFinster

Did you fit a DRO to your 158? If so, I would be interested to see if you found a good place for the X-axis scale because there is not much space underneath..........without protruding past the surface of the vertical table (where the two tee slots are located for mounting worktables, dividing attachment, large workpieces etc) I would be interested to see if you came up with a nice solution. It would be nice to still have access to the trip dogs for disengaging the x axis feed after fitting the scale

Yes, i did fit a DRO to the 158. With regards to the x-axis: you do really touch a soft spot here. I mounted it below the vertical table using the existing T-slots. As you say, the problem is that it protrudes past the table surface. Thus I have to remove the x-axis DRO in rare cases. Admittedly: i am not entirely happy with this solution. And, no, unfortunately the trip dogs are no longer adjustable. I left the end ("emergency") stops in place, of course.

@@HaraldFinster Pretty similar to my result. I mounted it to the tee slot also. Mine has an angle-iron cover piece mounted in there also to protect from cutting oil and chips. The result protrudes about 10mm past the vertical surface. It just means that the tilting table only gets maybe ten degrees each side before you have to remove the dro scale..........if you needed to tilt the table sideways and could not achieve the desired setup by another means, either fore/aft tilting or using a sinebar. Unfortunately the trip dogs are gone, but never really a problem as you have a big ruler-scale on top of the saddle to tell you when you are near the ends of the travel🤡 I use the soft wire shanks from pop-rivets as shearpin material for the two feed shear pins. Seems to be just about right for allowing heavy cuts but also they shear pretty easy when required
@HaraldFinster2 жыл бұрын
@@g00167015 I used angled aluminium profiles to protect the ruler. They are a little bit bent meanwhile because I tilted the table downwards a bit to fast and hit the protective angle-profile. It still works fine. Good hint with the shear pin. I used to use regular wire nails. They seem to work fine so far. One of them sheared off recently (without any obvious reason). I will try your solution with the pop-rivet shanks!

Unfortunately not.

When you undo the withdrawer nut, how do you stop the spindle from turning?
@HaraldFinster Жыл бұрын
It doesn't require a lot of force. Thus it is sufficient to put the machine in low gear so that the drive train keeps the spindle from spinning.
@cai876 Жыл бұрын
@@HaraldFinster thanks. How about when you tighten the draw bar? On mine, even in low gear, the motor provided very little resistance
@HaraldFinster Жыл бұрын
@@cai876 tightening the draw bar doesn't require a lot of force. I have never had any issues. The spindle of my Thiel is driven by a motor with an integrated brake. I am not sure if all models are driven by this type of motor. It might be worth checking the functionality of this brake in your case? Feel free to ask if you need more information on the brake system.
@cai876 Жыл бұрын
@@HaraldFinster thanks! I think my brake must be non operational. It's a Thiel 158s if that makes any difference
