Also, to add, agree with Joe regarding the guitar from John Sykes on Thunder and Lightning. I wanted to love this album so much. I love metal. I love guitar solos. But his guitar work on this album, particularly the solos, to me, sound so pasted-in over the top of the songs, so out of place, and so void of actual soul, I just can't do it. Sucks, because there are some cool tracks on that album. I've tried, and I'll probably try again, but this album just doesn't gel with me, and his guitar is the biggest reason why, I think.

I had listened to a few albums but didn't remember them. * I struggled a bit evaluating these albums because Thin Lizzy has a rather conventional mainstream rock sound and I've always gravitated to the unconventional, shunning regular run-of-the-mill rock n' roll. My ratings tend to be a bit generous because I rate according to how good I think something is. How much I actually like it is obviously a big part of that, but I might give something a good rating that I wouldn't normally reach for on my own. * These albums are loaded with great guitar solos, great riffs and great drumming. Not quite as strong in the songwriting department though. The lyrics tend to be pretty good, but they're occasionally cheesy or just plain weak. Case in point - the cringeworthy "Ray-Gun" which refers to a planet "three thousand miles away" from Earth. Aye-yi-yi. * It's true that these albums often rock, but let's be honest - they couldn't touch the likes of Led Zeppelin. * Thin Lizzy were influential, but I suppose I'm a bit spoiled by the heavier music that came later. When Thin Lizzy try to get heavy and tough, it's not always convincing. * I think Elton John may have taken inspiration from "Rosalie" (the original, written by Bob Seger) for "The Bitch Is Back." * A number of songs have the same style as their megahit "The Boys Are Back in Town." I believe the first example is "Freedom Song" which actually came out on the previous album. * Cheers mates!!!!!!!!

A BIG THANK YOU BOYS for talking Thin Lizzy, one of my favourite rock bands ever (together with Kinks, Steely Dan and a few more...) Thin Lizzy are underrated and only a few songs are really wellknown today. I really like that you all appreciated the debut album and Vagabonds of the western world, great records. Maybe Thin Lizzy was a hardrock band but they was so much more, had a great versatility. I think the band could be a lot bigger but they often sabotaged their own career with drug problems and more. Phil Lynnot are undoubtedly one of the most gifted rockartists of all time, composer, lyricist, bassplayer (so good !!) and singer. I´m with Jason on the sound of Black Rose, it ruins my listen to that album. Renegade is not a great album but I think it is better than Thunder & Lightning, the latter could be any hardrock/metal band from the early 80:s, the Lizzy sound are gone. The Thin Lizzy albums I listen most often to today are Nightlife (I think it has stand the test of time very good), Vagabonds, Bad Reputation and Johnny The Fox. And those pretty ballads, like Old flame they do very well. Just love the twin guitar sound, listen to Wild one.... 1. Johnny The Fox 2. Bad Reputation (The title track is a killer hard rock song and Brians drumming so good) 3. Nightlife (Many fans don´t like this one but I think it grows for each listening) 4. Vagabonds of the western world Timeless album 5. Fighting 6. Jailbreak Great songs but not so good production compared to Johnny The Fox and Bad Reputation) 7. Black Rose 8. Thin Lizzy 9. Renegade 10. Chinatown Snowy White was not a perfect fit for Thin Lizzy but he is a great guitar player (many good soloalbums and also playing in Roger Waters band) and the riff on the titletrack rocks. 11. Thunder and lightning 12. Shades of a blue orphanage

This Dublin outfit's early albums contain good playing but don't feature that many great songs. With Phil Lynott's tough-but-tender persona being the driving force behind the band, they eventually figured out who they were and- by 1975's Fighting- their stylistic capriciousness gave way to expertly crafted hard rock. From that point on, their consistency is impressive. Jailbreak, from 1976, marks their musical peak and significantly elevated their worldwide profile. Their late-career albums take on some of the hallmark sounds of late-'70s and '80s metal but, on the whole, they don't drop significantly in quality. Coming into to the week I'd only heard Lizzy's '70s stuff, so the big discovery for me was their last studio effort, Thunder & Lightning. It's arguably their heaviest record and has to be one of the best finaI albums made by any band. I cannot promise Thin Lizzy will make my all-time top 100 given all the great competition- but I also can't rule them out. Every album is good and they have an exemplary reputation as a live act. Although, I don't see them as being a particularly great singles band, which holds them back a bit. MY RATING SYSTEM: 5.0 = major classic (consistently great *and* stratospheric highs) 4.5 = minor classic (consistently great *or* stratospheric highs, but not both) 4.0 = great (more than 50% is worth revisiting and it's an essential record for this artist/style - passes my "it'll make a fan out of someone who's new to this artist" test) 3.5 = seriously good (more than 50% is worth revisiting) 3.0 = nominally good (less than 50% is worth revisiting) 2.5 = decent (competent but uninspired - not worth revisiting) 2.0 = poor (difficult listen) 1.5 = awful (can't finish it) 1.0 = historically awful (musical apocalypse) *Note: "Consistently" does not mean "flawlessly." I allow for a few clunkers if the rest of the songs are good enough. Also, I don't go below 1 star because once I'm in the realm of the truly terrible I don't care to differentiate anymore.

A video recommendation for Taste Like Music is to choose ten (for example) of the acts you all (Joe, Kramzér and Jason) ranked the albums from and then rank them as a whole against each other. Maybe having some sort of red line between the bands. Like the discussion at the end here. Say you choose: Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Thin Lizzy, Moot the Hoople, Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Rush, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles. Then everyone pick from 1-10. It's a shame that the crazy UK & Ireland practice of leaving singles off albums means that "Whisky In the Jar" is pretty much left out of discussions like this one. It's the defining early Lizzy song, a massive hit in the UK, and still on every pub jukebox over there. What's more, we owe the classic Lizzy to that record: Eric Bell was so appalled at having appeared on a record a lot of people enjoyed that he promptly left the band, thus opening the way to the Lizzy we all know and love.

Jason's top 5 were the exact 5 I kept after a CD purge a few years back. I'll only rank those: 05) Fighting 04) Nightlife 03) Jailbreak 02) Johnny the Fox 01) Bad Reputation I wouldn't compare Thin Lizzy to AC/DC or Led Zeppelin. Lizzy at their best were a whole different thing - much more soulful. Interesting band with a very patchy discography. Their best stuff is very rewarding. Popoff's flatulant opinion on almost any album he cares to talk should be approached with extreme caution. His knowledge may be impressive to some, sure, but that doesn't mean his ears are remotely trustworthy.

JASON ------> RENEGADE 👍👍👍 Wayyyy more infectious, better produced and catchy than either Chinatown or the much overrated, bad sounding Black Rose. And as usual, Jason's list and musical perspective is spot on, excellent. I grew up with these albums, and my Thin Lizzy ranking is almost exactly the same. Almost. So....Rock on, J! ⚡ Marc **p.s. NOTES: a. Johnny The Fox (1976) is my personal soft spot #1 b. to me, the best stuff on Jailbreak are the killers, "Emerald" and "Warriors," ..along with the title track. and "Angel from The Coast" is great too. * I dont really go in for that blue collar TBABIT bullshit and Cowboy pap though. "Cowboy Song" is not a bad song, and the great harmony guitars definitely save it, but the lyrics can blow me. Never need to hear Boys again, either. c. Now, of major importance and highly notable reference, and w/ the full understanding that this is only about studio albums..... "LIVE AND DANGEROUS" is the greatest Thin Lizzy album. Also, one of the great double live albums of the decade and all-time (along with many others of the era, such as Allmans at Fillmore East, Unleashed In The East, Kiss Alive!, Humble Pie Rockin' The Fillmore, David Live at The Tower, Philadelphia, If You Want Blood (You've Got It), Roxy & Elsewhere, Cheap Trick at Budokan, Rock n Roll Animal, Strangers In The Night, etc.)... ..and its the place where you will find superior, highly visceral versions of many Thin Lizzy songs (eg, "Rosalie," Sha-La-La," "Still In Love With You," "Dont Believe a Word," "DITM," ... even "Jailbreak" are much more "alive and ass kicking" in this excellent 'live' setting. **Finally, Gorham and Robertson are SO good on "Live and Dangerous"!! Its silly how fantastic they both are on this album. Reminds me of Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner's brilliance on "Rock and Roll Animal," Angus Young on "If You Want Blood," Duane Allman on "at Fillmore East," Earl Slick on DAVID LIVE, Ace Frehley on "Kiss Alive!" or Marriott & Frampton on "Rockin' The Fillmore" Stunning, visceral, spine ripping lead guitar that helped make the 1970s the greatest era that ROCK ever knew. Thanks for your indepth review of the Thin Lizzy discography and for giving your honest opinions stated with detailed explanations. I have a totally different take on the hard rock / proto metal pantheon because I like Thin Lizzy a lot better than Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and even better than Deep Purple though I prefer DP to LZ and BS too. Furthermore, I find it ironic that people have criticized Thin Lizzy for not being "deep" enough because I find Phil Lynot's lyrics, eloquence and chameleon like transformation of moods to be more impressive and more authentic than the preceding groups and to me they are much closer to Rush on my level of fondness and they are both among my favorite groups. I really don't know any group that sounds anything like Thin Lizzy with their mix of R and B. hard rock, proto metal, ballads, traditional Celtic or Irish elements, a bit of psychedelia, folk, and that distinctive twin guitar attack mixed with great eloquence in lyrics that's still has a street smart sense. I can't help but think that it is almost inevitable for a black Irishmen like Phil Lynott playing hard rock / proto metal back in the 1970s to be discriminated against since he had a problem with addiction and often included a sense of guilt in his lyrics because of his faith in God and confession of his faults. Such discrimination is likely even subconscious since it is assimilated through culture like water. Amazing the similarity between him and Jimi Hendrix in this sense and of course Jimi Hendrix was accepted more in the UK first like Thin Lizzy and also the great jazz men that preceded them. Heavy metal / hard rock has always been marked off as the provence for white guys from what I have seen. As far as favorite albums, Black Rose, Jail Break, Johnny the Fox, Bad Reputation, Fighting and Vagabonds of the Western World are my favorites.

I dont know any of their albums but that release schedule is insane. 12 albums in 12 years. An album a year was very common in the 70s for some reason I dont know. I thought we might get back to something like that due to the internet and technology but I guess not.

Those were the days. Back then, releasing at least one album every year was the expectation. Remember, the '70s came directly in the wake of artists like The Beatles and Dylan (who were sometimes putting out 2 albums a year!) There was just higher standard.

I only have Jailbreak , Johnny the Fox , and a double disk greatest hits of Thin Lizzy's music . So , I'm not qualified to rank their catalogue . Although I have heard most of their albums . Luckily , I did see them live at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1977 , when they were touring the Bad Reputaition album . They were absolutely great live , and they played songs from Jailbreak , Johnny the Fox , and Bad Reputation , while mixing in songs from the earlier catalogue . Even better , that night they were opening for Queen , who were also at the peak of their powers , and delivered a killer show . And for such greatness , I had to fork over $ 7.50 per ticket ( in Canadian dollars ! ) . And they were great seats , up by the stage . Anyway , I enjoyed your lists . I will have to give their albums another listen . Cheers !

Guys, I saw Lizzy many times from the late 70s right to 83, and they were absolutely brilliant live. 22:00 - such a cool band…I kind of agree with all these three lists. Phil was one of the great rock stars, he had the writing chops and the swagger, however he also had the party head too…which was to his detriment when it came to the consistency. I love the early folk stuff, find the words and the charm of Phil’s lyrics and singing really hit a sweet spot for me. I want to say that there is a great record in Black Rose, but production and the song choice is not great. Especially when you consider some of Phil’s solo songs written at the same time and also Parisienne Walkways and A Night In The Life Of A Blues Singer also written at the same time. With Love, Waiting For An Alibi and the the title track hark back to the earlier romantic side of Phil which is always welcome and something I wish had been expanded on a lot more. Great programme guys.

Great band. Great choice. Great countdown, but, but, but…for this one I’m gonna go against the grain and TLMs criteria and pick the live album. I know they’re not as big these days but back in the day some (some) were essential must haves in a collection and “Live and Dangerous” is way up there and for me the must have of their entire collection. I’d put “The Song Remains the Same” by Zep. “Get yer Ya-Ya’s Out” by The Stones and The Who “Live at Leeds” as all classics. I know you don’t include them and there are so many bad ones, some purely contractual obligations but “Live and Dangerous” is a bona fide must have.
