What Thin Lizzy used to do when they played this song live is to follow it directly with "Boys are back in town" which because of both songs being in the same key works perfectly. I don't recall ever hearing this song as part of a movie soundtrack, and I've seen hundreds of cowboy movies over the years. I really dig the groove when the song picks up. What a great twin guitar solo too. This song sneaks up on you when you're listening to the radio and doing other things. You hear the intro and think it's one sort of song, but when it kicks in, you might think it's another song entirely. Yep, rock and roll, but they laid down a pattern so many later bands followed well into the 80's, like Guns N' Roses etc.

I’m in agreement. I grew up watching the B&W ( John Ford ) Western s , etc... I’m reasonably sure that it has never been used in a “Western “ film. Not that it would not be a great tune if used. This brings back memories of the hot Dublin summer of '76, down on Dollymount beach, the sun blazing, the air full of this song coming across on all the transistor radios. Phil himself would occasionally wander down to the Lifeguard hut, drink tea, hang out with the Dublin Corporation lifeguards (my older brother was one), and spin yarns. Phil Lynott is a revered figure in Dublin. His statue, always bedecked with flowers, is next to McDaid's and Bruxelles pubs just off Grafton St. Say "hi" next time you're in Dublin. In a city full of statues to great Irish literary figures, I think his is one of the few statues (if not the only one) dedicated to a musician, an indication of the esteem in which Dubliners hold him. RIP Phil. A son of Dublin and one of life's eternal gentlemen.

FYI posted on the adventures of TNT - Great background info :- @ So, this is probably the single best Thin Lizzy reaction I've seen on KZbin. You absolutely, 100% get it, right away. And you started off in an incredible way. Thin Lizzy is best known for their famous dual guitar harmonies (which actually weren't really displayed in either track you listened to). Fans love them for the frontman Phil Lynott, who was one of the only half-Black/half-Irish people living in Ireland in his era (we're talking less than 100 people in the entire country). His unique upbringing gave him a unique musical perspective and he effortlessly would mix Celtic melodies, funk, rock, metal, jazz and soul to create sounds that were distinctly Thin Lizzy, and they've been covered by tons of bands including Megadeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Sade, and many, many others. Phil was known as an incredibly charismatic frontman and poet. He had duality that made him appealing: he could sing a song about being in a barfight full of charisma and swagger and then sing a vulnerable love song that felt authentic and true, and he was able to convey each side with the same level of conviction and honesty. The emotion, passion, charisma, swagger, coolness, heart and intelligence seeps out into his lyricism and he's well remembered by fans (and rock scholars) as one of the era's best poets. The fact that you started off with the band's more funky side, playing to his Black roots and showing off his charisma and swagger, and then followed it up with Whiskey in the Jar (the band's take on a classic folk song -- and believe me, they made it their own and Metallica covered this version specifically) which showcased Phil's more heartfelt side and his Irish roots, gave you a big taste of the spectrum of Thin Lizzy and what Phil is about as a frontman. Phil was a good soul, ahead of his time, socially aware and by all accounts an awesome dude. And btw, I'm only 30, and Thin Lizzy is my #3 favorite band. Their catalog is brilliant. So, where do you go from here? You probably owe it to yourself to go through their biggest hits. Jailbreak and The Boys Are Back In Town are their most famous songs stateside (they are basically only known for three hits in America, the other being Whiskey in the Jar). Dancing in the Moonlight will definitely be your jam, it's an amazing ballad with sexy, sexy, sexy SAXOPHONE and is super heartfelt. Massacre is the best mixture of funk and metal of all time (not using hyperbole here --- Iron Maiden covered this one). Thunder and Lightning will melt your face off with how metal it is and it's about a god damn bar fight. The Rocker has a lot of swagger and you'll be really confused if you listen to Fighting My Way Back and discover it's not considered a classic because it sounds like it deserves to be a mega hit. Their catalog is truly amazing and it's one of the best in music history, once you dive in you'll discover hundreds of great songs with killer hooks, great lyrics, heart, passion, charisma, swagger, and diversity of sound. Basically everything one would want in a band. It's a crime that most people only know The Boys Are Back In Town (and then the rock fans know Jailbreak and most people know Metallica's version of Whiskey in the Jar) and that in some circles they are thought of as a "one hit wonder". I do Thin Lizzy reactions on my small little channel every Thursday to spread the word because I think they are criminally underrated. I'm subscribed and am looking forward to seeing more, because you absolutely get it. Cheers mate! - Greg

Definitely hard rock. Just remember, “classic rock” was a phrase invented by fm radio. There’s no such thing as classic rock. That’s radiospeak.

Kevin Warren Isn’t it “classic” because it’s old? It can be classic + any genre.

@@sarahzentexas The funny thing is that when classic rock stations first came out they'd also play contemporary songs from bands like Guns N' Roses and Metallica.

sarahzentexas No. The phrase “classic rock” has been around since the 70s, when the music they were playing was still fairly contemporary. They needed a way to get people to listen to FM, rather than AM, and there’s nothing like a good old-fashioned gimmick to hook Americans.

Kevin Warren Where were you in the 70’s??? Because in Dallas, which was a huge city even then, there was AM Top 40, and then there were the FM album rock stations. Never heard the term “classic rock” until the late 80’s, when we got “alternative” as an option. Classic rock is what the FM rock stations started calling the hits that everyone knew, to distinguish them from ALTERNATIVE.

I don't know what his point is (as to why he's ”reacting”) but Thin Lizzy isn't jus a band. They pushed the boundaries of what ”rock” music could sound like. Shaped, molded and sonically changed it. Thin Lizzy inspired more bands then you can imagine. Metallic, Mastodon- many rock band saying that they have their favorites, but Thin Lizzy made them. But that's me being prolific- Thin Lizzy was and always will be the greatest rock band if all time. I hope you sit down and explore their music. And not jus record yourself. But jus enjoy what they did, the music and the legend.
