It's like the watermelon is trying to appear bigger and more robust than it actually is. We all have this expectation of what watermelon is supposed to be, what it's supposed to fulfill for us. A thin slice of watermelon isn't going to make a great snack for anyone. But once the facade is lifted, we see the true watermelon. It's almost happy, dancing in the wind- and it's beautiful. When Nathan turns to the viewer, it's like he is almost challenging the viewer to examine their own perceived shortcomings. What facade are we presenting to others and when will we allow ourselves to dance in the wind just like the watermelon?
@fizwizzle19893 жыл бұрын
I think you’re reading too much into it, this is clearly a simple statement about empirical epistemology in light of Kantian apriori propositions. More concretely we assume watermelons are anything but thin from experience, and if Nathan were to show an image of a regular full watermelon instead we would assume that it was an ellipsoid with some significant depth. Yet the two dimensional observation itself says nothing about depth, it’s only our past assumptions about what watermelons “should be like” that extrapolate the observation to give the illusion that it extends beyond what we actually saw. Afterwards we might say “I saw a big watermelon.” Did you? Thus Nathan is making a case for the Kantian premise that objects conform to our cognition. In fact there is no real choice to be made between having objects conform to our cognition or our cognition conform to objects, because if we take the former path it’s only because paradoxically we are conforming to the property of the object that it is unknowable. Much of what we think of as “empirical observation” is heavily coloured by a network of apriori rules in our head. The napkin represents the barrier between us and truly knowing the object in and of itself. That’s all there is to it.

This is definitely some late 2000s humor. The background ambient city noise, aspect ratio, lack of dialogue, dramatic zoom, lack of color reminiscent of life around the 2008 stock market crash.. it all comes together. Thin watermelon is a time capsule.

I'd have to say this is more early 2000s humour rather than late 2000s humour, considering there are still 78 years to go of the 2000s. And even more still if 2000s include the rest of the millennium.

What I just witnessed was a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. It mas meticulously choreographed in one take and one take alone that is rarely surpassed by many AAA hollywood stars. The angle of the shot directing our eyes to the "thin watermelon" as it gets to the point hence the title. The subtle execution using Fibonacci's ratio, a relief of sore eyes. The watermelon alone, sliced finely and razor thin - perfect for the shot. The weather's contribution of wind, rain, moisture, pressure, precipitation, sunlight and more could never duplicate a never more quintessential scenery. The actor's support aside, I appreciate it.
