Actually thing is the hand of a main character in another show that the creators of Wednesday made. The hand is stitched up because the main character who had the hand got it hurt a lot. The hand is somehow moving without any magic. Or anyone controlling it.

The real backstory of Thing: So, the producer of the original Addams Family movie had another movie they directed. One of the characters, a man, lost his hand in that movie. My guess is that one of the Addams’ found the hand somewhere and decided to put it back together and make it alive, creating the first moments of Thing.
