I love Anthony's brutal honesty because he doesn't sugarcoat anything. He says what's on his mind straight up. Lynyrd Skynyrd is a perfect band to talk about for this topic because they've had numerous lineup changes since they reformed after the plane crash, which is why people complain they're a glorified tribute band. More so now that Gary Rossington isn't alive anymore. Personally, I enjoy the music Lynyrd Skynyrd put out after the plane crash, but they never made enough studio albums with Johnny. Probably because they're too busy playing the hits on tour. That's another problem. The band has all this new stuff with Johnny Van Zant on vocals, but because the casuals only want the hits, they mostly play stuff from the '70s. At this point, maybe they are a tribute band since they are playing the same songs over and over again, but if you're going to reform the band, release new music, and bring new life to the band, don't play the same stuff over and over again. It seems like Lynyrd Skynyrd aren't willing to give Johnny's songs a chance, which is why they only play songs from the Ronnie Van Zant era. They never even got to release a final studio album with Gary.

I know shows are for the hits, but gosh dang if you have 12 albums are only plays stuff from 4 of them, that's a bummer. I like every album to be represented by at least one song at a show.

Heck the studio wouldnt release alot of them because they considered it too much. Every album was different and the style of it was different. Heck he even looked different each album with the way he dressed and did his hair. When it come to Live shows, there is none greater. Plus he would do a Hard Rock setlist one night, then a blues setlist the next night. Not to mention he wrote all his own stuff and could play all the instruments. Regarding the time between albums; the economics of the industry changed. Bands used to make money selling albums, so they would play enough shows to get the word out, then use the time the record was still selling to make the next one. Today, when bands don't make money selling records, they need to play far more shows to make the same amount of money. If it takes three times the touring to generate the same income, that stretches the timeline right there. There isn't time to play a full national/world tour and write/record a new album every single year.
@bgmchrisc Жыл бұрын
@@JIF882 It's one of those things that works both ways. There's less money to go into a studio and do things the old way, but it's also never been easier to record guitars, bass, and vocals at home and get great results. This was an excellent video! The two points that really stood out for me were the same songs being played in live sets and endless "greatest hits" albums. As you mentioned in the video (And as some people have mentioned in this comment thread), KISS is one of the most egregious offenders of this. I love the band! They are one of my top three favorite bands of all time, but you shouldn't have almost as many GREATEST HITS albums as you do studio albums (Three GREATEST HITS albums and a box set with rarities should be the max and that is ONLY if the band has had a 30+ year career!). As for live sets, and I go back to KISS as an example... Yes, there will always be staples that need to be played (If they didn't play DETROIT ROCK CITY or LOVE GUN, I could understand if people started throwing furniture), but they have a WEALTH of great music that they could dust off that would make diehard fans and "greatest hits" fans happy. I get songs like UNDER THE ROSE or SHE'S SO EUROPEAN going over like a wet firecracker, but MR. SPEED... SWEET PAIN... WHO WANTS TO BE LONELY?... It's sad when bands become their own tribute band/cover band.

When a band leaves an original off an album in favor of a cover song, especially when the original they left off is good. Sammy Hagar with 2120 off his last album is my go to example. Probably my favorite song on the album, possibly my favorite Hagar song in decades. Relegated to a Target edition bonus track while the album proper gets a cover of Pump It Up that I skip every time. Black Star Riders is another recent example of a cover making the album while two killer originals are relegated to an overpriced vinyl deluxe edition. If you’re contractually obligated to deliver exclusive tracks, make the cover the exclusive.

I’ll say this about “key member changes”: it’s a double edged sword. 1. This gives the band a new lease on life however 2. You think back when you seen the band previous. Perfect example: Genesis. They bought in Ray Wilson after Phil Collins. I was so exited to see the band and they canceled the North American Tour in 1997 or 1998 due to lack of ticket sales. That sucks for fans as well.
@treff9226 Жыл бұрын
I think there are too many instances when a well known band, changes too many original, or even long time members, and keeps the name. I realize the "brand" is everything, but by changing the name, a signal is sent out to music fans that this collective group is a new beginning, they're not going to just rest on previous accomplishments and are going to win over fans! Many of us serious music followers will follow individual musicians that we admire, wherever they go. This name change also removes any baggage left behind from original band and allows for a fresh start! But money is money, I certainly get that. Freakin' Foreigner is currently playing without one original member, not even Mick Jones, at times! That's ridiculous and fans shouldn't get near bullshit like that! We need to show our disgust with our wallets, or it will continue.

Some established bands , I think, become more like business people then artists who as result, lost touch with their core audience. A prime example of this, from my observation, was roughly a year ago when Metallica teamed up with Pro-Ject to create a very unique turntable. I'm not a fan of their music but this turntable looked amazing. It's the only turntable out there that's themed from this band. The cost of this turntable is $1500-$1600.00. That's the retail price....I don't doubt that there are some people who can afford it. Is it worth $1500? The answer to that question will always be subjective depending who you ask. I'm not a fan of Metallica, however the turntable looks fantastic. Would I pay $1500 for it? No. I'd bet the majority of their fanbase cannot either afford it, while some will simply not buy it out of principal because of that price tag. Meanwhile, no other turntables have been released by Metallica/Pro-Ject, which is my issue with them. If a band wants to market a special turntable, that's totally logical, but why not try to create and market a turntable that costs between $500-$600 that the majority of their fans can have a reasonable chance to purchase? This is what happens when you have a band of middle-agers who have been very rich for a long time, and during that process they forget or chose to disassociate themselves from a time long before they were millionaires; hence taking things for granted from that comfortable perspective and losing touch with their core audience.

It takes a certain amount of maturity to have that outlook - nice work! I think when it comes to music, there is an escape aspect to it, music allows us to tap into our soul and spirit, our creative side as well! I believe artists should have an outlet for the feelings they have, but should express themselves in ways that don't alienate a huge swath of people, it can be done, and HAS been done by a multitude of artists. The mainstream media and politicians themselves are using the "divide and conquer" method more than ever (I think that's why you see more and more people "leading" with their politics) thus keeping our collective attention away from what they're NOT doing, which is representing all of us, tackling tough issues, spending our tax dollars with results! You are first and foremost a human being who really just wants what most of us want - to live in a fair and just world, to exist in an environment that works for as many people as possible. You're a Republican, I'm a Democrat (moderate) but that's just a small part of who we really are, most of my friends are conservative, and although we disagree on issues, we have much more in common than not! We basically want the same things - low interest rates and a cure for baldness. As you said, most artistic peeps are liberals, but a large majority of these people are sensible and don't scream their political leanings into ears. Uncle Ted does tend to "go off" with his rants, but I can easily put all that aside and focus on his amazeballs guitar playing and killer music.....plus he's funnier than most stand ups! You got Kid Rock and Country artists too, if you're looking for conservative artists. Anyone who outright treats you as the enemy, in a way that is malicious and hostile, has no business taking up one damn minute of your time - kick em' to the curb! Take care and keep music in the air!✌️

@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
Long Gone Day. They just dropped a new album about a week or 2 ago. It’s only out for streaming right now but Anthony says they will eventually get CDs and vinyl printed up. If you decide you want to order something you can reach out to Anthony at ACSSrecords@gmail.com

Headline bands who play a short set. Especially bands with decades of material, who play for a meager 90 minutes. I always feel ripped off.

I wish Metallica would re release there live albums of Live Shit Binge n Purge on cd.
@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
I don’t realize they’re out of print. Perhaps it’s because they’re going to do a gigantic boxset version like they have been with the studio albums.
@superunknown2812 Жыл бұрын
@BrendonSnyder so they had the original box set from 1993 with the vhs tapes of the live recordings of Seattle and San Diego on cd and included the VHS tapes.They should just re release the 2 concerts on cd only

Personally, I don't blame bands that refuse to "play the hits", because many of the so-called "hits"--especially if they were 3-minute jingles designed for AM radio back in the day---aren't even songs they wanted their "true" fans to hear in the first place. They were either accidents that almost didn't make it onto an album, or forced to produce by a record label because they don't hear a hit on the album they were about to release.
@BrendonSnyder3 ай бұрын
Thats simply not true. Why would you boil it down to a one size fits all response? While some artists may have done that, for the bulk of artists out there like Neil Young who has never written anything because he had to, simply isn’t the case. He chooses not to play them because he always wants to be doing something new. Not because he hates the songs or wrote them because he was forced to. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️

The simple reality why artists don't release new albums regularly, there just is not the same return for the time, effort and investment anymore. They make more money touring now.
@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
Yes that’s true, doesn’t mean I still don’t want to hear new music regularly.

My 2cents, the stupidest thing an artist could do is call their fans names because of their political beliefs. In my opinion I just buy the last record and seen you for the last lime. And I’m all about supporting band especially in this day and age.

aerosmith, van halen, and cheap trick ditching key original personnel for a new member/their son preventing a true final tour in aerosmith's case or full reunion, in van halen's. hell look at slipknot who seems to go through an album cycle where some longtime member quits. and also annoying is when a member is fired from a band and has to mention it in every interview for 40 goddamn years.

Alice Cooper puts out great new music but doesn't do them live
@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
Really?? I haven’t seen him on the last few tours but usually when he has a new album out he does 3 or 4 new songs in the set. His last few live albums that followed a new studio album also show that. Maybe you’re seeing him at a time he is not promoting a new album. But I agree that I hate it when bands only plans new songs from the album they’re promoting and no other songs from previous recent albums. So they will do mostly 70’s hits and then 3 new songs from 2023 and nothing in between.

I agree with Nugent, but bands of all political stripes need to put on their website that they will get political during their concerts. I in fact avoid Pearl Jam because they support people I don't like.
@SK-qu4wo Жыл бұрын
Speaking of political views in music. The death metal band 'Dying Fetus' was a left leaning band lyrically for their first few albums, but ever since 9/11 they became sorta extreme right wing/xenophobic in their lyrics and that never sat right with me. If you're gonna be a political band at least don't flip flop on your idealogy.

what? artists should force themselves to crank out music? and you feel like you deserve that because you paid for a DIFFERENT release of theirs? what a horrible view to think about art, why in the world would you want artists you love to just do it for money and obligation? they don't owe you shit, i genuinely thought you guys were joking at first

you are not owed new material on any timeline just because you like the band and gave them money for something else, viewing such an amazing type of art as just a business like this is so sad

I think you misunderstood. I did say that I didn’t expect bands to write of they’re not feeling it. But the idea that a band doesn’t need to make an album for 5 or 10 or 15 or even 20 years is crazy to me.

I don’t think age has anything to do with it. Look at Alice Cooper, he’s 75, still touring and making new albums and sounds great doing it and has never done a farewell tour.

I tried to be a Slipknot fan and I like some of their stuff but the constant lineup changes is what turned me off from them. However I discovered a band that I think is phenomenal from listening to them and that is Stone Sour. The House of Gold & Bones 1 and 2 are amazing records to me. Those 2 albums especially Vol.2 are as good as anything out there.
