I was thinking about testing exactly this, and thanks for mentioning my LUTs! Speaking of softness I was doing some tests between C70 and R5, the C70 was so much softer that I’ve decided I’ll start sharpening in post. I tried the internal settings and saw virtual no difference.

I've noticed this too. I actually dislike how soft it is.
@WildOneFilms
@WildOneFilms Жыл бұрын
@@Dilandau88 I get why people feel that way, but its a cinema camera. Movies are high definition but the image is meant to be soft, to emulate the film look. That overly sharp digital look makes things that are supposed to be cinematic look almost cheaper in a way. I've heard the R5C's video is much sharper, but that makes sense as you want photos to be sharper. It all depends on what you're shooting!

I tested the Long GOP vs the H.265 on my C70 in Resolve on my M1 Max 16, and there is no lag on playback that you saw in Premiere. Sadly as it is with so many things, it seems to be Premiere related. On Resolve the playback, skimming, rendering speeds, and effects playback speed were exactly the same regarding Long GOP or H.265. I did also see slight improvement in quality with Long GOP over H.265, and the sound difference coming off of my Rode NTG 3 was better in Long GOP. Thx to your video, and actually testing it myself as well, I think I will be switching back to Long GOP as the difference in video and audio are real, and the file size difference is not that bad. thx again for your videos. They are great.

Super helpful! New to the c70 workflow and definitely agree with the AVC on certain projects and h265 on KZbin and direct to client. Well done sir, keep delivering that premium c70 content and tips!

Been a Canon video shooter all my life but recently made the switch to a different ecosystem; the Sony FX3. The C70 was the last piece of release that tempted me stay with Canon but couldn't really do so due to the lack of reliable autofocus in dark environments. I still like to watch videos on it though and this was a fun one.

Keep in mind that the recording was _most likely_ done at 48kHz in camera, which was then resampled by KZbin (or by Eric) to 44.1kHz, not to mention transforming everything to a single bit depth (presumably 32 bit), which means there were at least two processes that could've affected the final result, so the differences we hear (or claim to hear) might not be _just_ from the codec in the camera. That comparison is only fair if you listen to each clip separately in its original form, and in that case it's really, _really_ hard for a human to notice any difference. The case for higher sample rate and bit depth comes when you consider how much processing you'll be doing on the audio tracks in post-production, and, as usual, microphone positioning is much more important than that anyway, so worry more about that as long as you can control it.
@J_HNP
@J_HNP 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you definitely wouldn’t hear the different between 16bit and 24bit with an average speaking voice. You would hear the difference if you were screaming into the mic, as the 16bit audio would blow out sooner. When going from 16, to 24, to 32bit, you gain more dynamic range, but you aren’t going to hear it unless you go from very quite to very loud.

It's very easy to mass rename MP4 files, at least in windows. Basically CTRL+A, right click on first file, "newname(101), ENTER.

I shoot HEVC on my C70, and just use the in-built batch rename in finder. I just add my custom file name before the original, so I have both in each file.

This is so exciting, last fall I was working on a national ad, and the Cine said that H.265 never really took a hold and was probably going out. LOL. Canon and Apple for the win.

Good video. I have been using H.265 the entire time on my C70 since I bought it around the same time I bought a M1 MacBook Air. I always use Automator to do a batch rename if it is a shoot with a variety of angles and cameras… it is pretty fast to do and not much of an inconvenience.

Long GOP plays back fine on my Windows PC, even 3 layers on top of each other play fine in the timeline. The Nvidia NVENC encoder on most current graphics cards can chew through those tricky codecs.

Great stuff thanks for this! I've come to very similar conclusions. Metadata has never been a dealbreaker for the projects I work on, but I am still shooting XF-AVC if I am handing footage over to an editor or production company because another editor is much less likely to have an M1 Mac than an older Mac or a PC, and they will hate to be handed files they can't edit. For my own quick turnaround client work (about 50% of what I do) I love how easy it is to edit the HEVC on the M1 Pro. If anything I just feel grateful that I have the option for both codecs.

Hi. Thanks for the tips! Will use mp4 now instead. I did some tests. It seems like the All-intra has the same look as the mp4-format, they seem to be identical in color. And the Long GOP is more magenta... :)

Have you noticed any significant difference between the 4K H.265 10bit 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2 in the C70 during color correction/grading? In some cases like shooting long events, I want the most 4K record time without sacrificing 10bit. 4K 10bit 4:2:2 H.265 at 24p is 135 Mb/s 4K 10bit 4:2:0 H.265 at 24p is 100 Mb/s That's a 35% difference in the amount of data needed which is pretty significant. You're talking about roughly an extra hour and a half of recording on a 256GB card which would come in handy.

Great videos. However the lack of 24bit audio really bothers me a lot using H265. I also can tell the difference, even after the YT compression.. as usual stupid quirks of Canon that brings me again away from the idea of buying this camera (mediocre autofocus and quite dim screen apart). Seriously not sure if to go for Sony or to wait the next gen of Canon, even don't have much hope they'll change their attitude toward the clients. 😬
@theothermarkwilliams
@theothermarkwilliams 2 жыл бұрын
The dim screen is something I haven't seen many others talk about, but I feel the same way. I just can't quite figure the screen out. It looks too dim to my eyes, but when I compare it to the HDMI out, it's pretty much dead on. If I increase the vibrance, the screen looks a lot better, but it's not as accurate to my eye in regards to exposure. It's been frustrating.

@@theothermarkwilliams Weird enought, they made a compact cinema camera with a low profile look that needs a decent monitor to be able to shoot outside, although this way you wouldn't have access to the touch interface on the added brighter screen.

Hi Eric. I found your channel by doing a C 70 search because I just got one a couple weeks ago and I’m using it for my first wedding this Saturday along with the Ronin RS 2 and the couple videos I’ve seen by you so far have been super helpful so you have a new subscriber and fan! Question. Do you know of any way to make the C 70 work with the Ronin as far as a third-party USB cable? It really bums me out that I can’t use the Ronin controls to control the camera. Thanks.

So just to make sure im hearign this right, because of your m1 MacBook, editing with h.265 footage is running well on that machine, BUT if you were to edit h.265 on your old machine, I would not work well, sooo if you don't have a m1 MacBook, just continue to shoot in XF-avc ?

I don't really see filenames as a problem as there are solutions for this that require almost no effort. If you are using a NAS to store footage most good ones will have some kind of feature where you can have a drop folder that runs automated, filtered tasks on the files like renaming and then moving. Mac has plenty of file renaming software available (Better Finder Rename 11 is great) and even a built-in automator that you can build some simple stuff yourself. The lack of metadata on the HEVC is a problem. Why is this even a thing? Someone fix that shit.
