You know what's better than re-locating a mic cable once? Re-Locating it TWICE!!! Great Work JB!!!

I really like the way you have the radio mounted above your mirror but I would probably have the same problem that you’re having because it gets pretty hot here in Missouri during the summer too. I’m glad to see that you’re back to making videos again.

Thanks Bob, yeah I print my “prototypes” out of pla at the moment. If I reprint it will be Petg that can take a little more heat. But if I get the 500 I have a commercial mount for it already and won’t have that problem lol.

The ftm400 uses one of each. I think the head separation wire is rj11 and the mic extension is rj12.

I am REALLY interested to see your mount for the FTM-500. I like mine but if you come up with something way better, Hmmmmmmmmm I am intrigued. I have a video dropping tuesday about my mobile AllStar setup and you can see how I have my FTM-500 mounted.

Hi JoeBrett, I've been down that RJ road, but there are another the RJ14 and RJ25. They all use the same physical connector, but the difference is in the number of pins used. RJ11 uses 2 pins, RJ14 uses 4 pins and RJ25 uses all 6 in the connector. The RJ12 also uses all 6 pins in the same physical connector. I think the wire layout between the RJ12 and RJ25 may be different. 73 WJ3U

Good to hear! Yeah I’m ready to get one, the speaker in the head is only reason I’m dedicated to getting it, rest of the radio is nice, but they could had done somethings different or had some SSB function to it for $600 I think. But I’ll gladly give

If you upgrade to a VGC VR-N7500 the install issues magically go away and everything just works.

The n7500 is a great idea and solution, but I prefer to have a physical front face to glance at and not fiddle with my phone to see and operate what I’m doing.

Joe - that kind of thing is *every* stinking project I do. Side quests, forgot to plug in the mic to record, etc. 4 hours later, i have finally shot a 5 minute video. I feel your pain! Great job on running the wires, that install is boss, son.

Best kit I purchased was a CAT5 cable kit to make and test my own cables. Just add the modular jack of choice.

Oh I agree. I have that kit myself with plenty of various length scraps of Ethernet from work. Comes in handy, but I didn’t have any rj12 ends for this one.

Another great video and thank you. We also have a Tahoe like yours. I have a FT-7900 that I’ve thought about putting in there, but it’s the wife’s daily driver. Everything would have to be a clean out of the way install. I know you said you 3D printed the head mount but how is it mounted up there? Double sided tape? Also where’s the main/body unit at? I’m also trying to figure out coax and power routing. I would like to have a FTM-300 like I have in my vehicle but maybe someday lol.
@K5YVY
@K5YVY 7 ай бұрын
The 3D printed piece I made to slide between the upper console and headliner. It has the bracket that the head snaps into, keeping the ability to remove the head unit if needed. But what I like is the whole install can be removed without any trace in less than 10 minutes. The main body in under my driver seat. Nothing is hardwired or permanently mounted. 👍

@@K5YVY thank you and that’s good to know. You’ve definitely given me some good ideas. I appreciate it. I’ve also wondered if the top of the center console/cup holder popped off easy enough to mount the main unit under there. And still be able to secure it enough so it didn’t move around.

I've had this radio since 2006. It's been in two different vehicles and I still have the mic issue. My first mic cable the plastic just peeled away with age. The current cable pulled away from the connector. I think I'm going to look into something like you have. Thanks for the video.

No Doubt the plastic on the cord is horrible, relocating will take stress off it, but it’s still going to peel eventually. Thanks 👍

@@K5YVY I found last night some connectors. Going to crimp a new connector. The joy of a cheap mic cord lol. I will eventually replace the radio with a ftm 200. I have one of those in my home now. Love the radio.

@@N2ELS. I have considered the 200 and 300, as the primary functions that I'm looking for is Dual vfo simultaneous receive and APRS, but if I can snag a 500 on sale I would really like the speaker being in the head unit as well having the body speaker active as well, removing my external speaker now. Good find on the connectors! Always nice when we can fix and not be forced to replace.

Z E R O. it’s tucked in behind the console, last shot toward then end you can’t see the cable anymore 😎. The connector is wedged really tight, but if it did work loose it would not drop to my feet. ✅
