This is the fourth in several episodes discussing the things i've learned from Barry Harris I started studying with Barry in 1993 and still learn from his teaching every day. I hope I can use this channel to help other musicians who are interested in Jazz but find it a little too cerebral. I think Barry's method, while being cerebral, is also direct and most important beautiful. Please Subscribe and feel free to comment below on how I can improve this channel I'm available for skype lessons if you prefer.

Right. Disciplined teaching would be showing one thing clearly so that it could be understood. I appreciate the brevity and I liken my self to the lateral thinking employed by the speaker, however I’m not able to grasp any one thing out of all of the long string of things that he hastily plays through. It’s like “something cool“ and then it’s the next thing without any explanation of how to approach it, where to start, how to practice it, technique, and application. To be disciplined, the speaker could take one idea out of these mini break it down, and build on it so that it could be well applied and understood. Instead we get an amalgam for I guess episode four.

These tutorials are some of the most valuable to the online guitar community, that I've ever seen. I like that you get to the point right away, as oppose to some channels that talk your ear off, just to satisfy KZbin's algorithm. When you're trying to improve, you don't have time to sit through an hour video only to find that the video barely covers a given topic of interest. Thanks a lot. Your teaching style is refreshing!

Been coming back to this video little by little each time ready for the next step. Finally got to the chromatic scale. Holy cow. Mind blown. Not only do we get thirds, triads, and arpeggios in chromatic, but then to put this in different modes, endless possibilities. I got my work cut out for me. I wish I started earlier!

practice notes: • Key of Bb, play scale 1-3-2-4 etc. Backward start on 3rd then tonic, etc. • Triads: play a note, skip a note - 1-3-5, 2-4-6, etc. Repeat 2nd note going up the scale. Then down, 5-3-1-3-4-2-7-2 etc. • Then 4-note chords, 1-3-5-7, 2-4-6-8, then down. • Half-step below first notes (approach note), up and down, on all of the above • Practice in every key, also on dominant (mixolydian) scales o Practice on Rhythm Changes • Barry’s chromatic scale o In the major (and dominant) scale, there are two places where there aren’t half steps between the scale notes. Play the next scale note and then back to previous scale note, e.g. in the key of C, play C-C#-D-D#E-G-F-F#-G-G#-A-A#-B-D-C. Coming down same idea. o Do in thirds, up and down, same thing. o Then triads up and down. o Then chords up and down. o Can use ‘jump notes’ other than the scale note from above, so long as the number of scale notes comes out right (keep it rhythmically accurate).

It's really great how just playing this solid for a little while that you don't even have to think so much... you can just kind of hear where the chord tones are going to land on strong beats while staying chromatic. Thank you.

Although I’m sure you’ve changed on things in the last 2 years, but I lowkey hope you still keep your mistakes in the videos, as in a subject like this you can even learn from someone else’s mistakes. Man! Before I started learning jazz, I thought I knew a lot about guitar. Even just at episode four, my mind is blown by how many possibilities exist. Thank you for these videos. I would love to have you show a bit about applying these concepts over changes rather than just on the scale. I know you show a bit about rhythm changes, but that part of the video moves very quickly, so it would be super helpful to go more in-depth about that. Connecting these phrases over tunes is tough.

I never thought to do the half step for the thirds triads and arps. When you do the arps you’re just doing all 12 notes which is damn sneaky. And then you know it in all 12 keys you have 12 chromatic scales. This is months worth of work. Love you man thank you
