Your best piece of advice to newer welders was that you didn’t know it all when you left welding school! That’s a hard one to admit, but field work will humble you!

Fantastic!! Thank you. You sound very authoritative and you state your concepts clearly. Very cool my friend! oh and an SA200(diesel) and a good generator that handles 9,000 or higher watts will fill any need you come up against.

Been watchin a while, love your advice. I bought a somewhat rough 1987 sa200 for 2k and put 1,200 worth of parts on it. Its by far the best machine ive ever used for stick and tig! (except a red face sa200 my old mentor had, but that shits way expensive) i highly recommend these machines. With a suitcase wire feeder it will do MIG too, but i havnt done that yet. Theres a reason theyre still around :) P.S. they ALL leak oil from the rear main seal, be it a few drops a week or a half quart, but there is an after market gasket to fix it

if you are going to pass a shipyard test , better run 125 per 1/8" 7018- 11018 and have a elect. rod can because rod tends to have a dry side and a more moist side that causes the rod flux to melt unevenly that a rookie does not notice

150 Amps on some machines is the sweet spot.
@commonconservative75512 жыл бұрын
@@Jonathan-bf6nh you are not going to run 1/8 7018 vertical uphill at 150 for more than 2 inches without melting blobs
@commonconservative75512 жыл бұрын
@@Jonathan-bf6nh fitters tend to run too hot to avoid sticking their rod when tacking , that is why they cannot weld longer than 2 inches especially vertical , plus they do not realize their inadvertent in and out movement causes the plate to heat up awkwardly, inconsistent = unlike how a robot might be perfectly consistent with tip to work distance

I agreed with everything but the sa200 idea Ive used them and compared to newer machines there aggressive arcforce and limited ability lose it for me. Suite cases are taking over mobile welding what I saved in not buying rods has made up the cost of paying for my 302d and extreme suite case. If you need and extra welder or more power pull out the geny good idea though.
@ralphdodson98653 жыл бұрын
New subscriber here, you probably already answered this but what size compressor do you have to run your plasma cutter? Thanks

Using my Hobart Champion it is difficult to know what Amperage I am running at. I have eventually decided on running my 6010, 6013 or 7018 at certain numbers on the dial that work for me. I might try running some test to see what amperage I am getting on the electrode after 120ft of 1/0 lead. I have my DC amp meter rated for 300 amps that should work. Well great videos.

Well in less than 6min I was reminded of how I passed my certification in 2015. Now thanks to COVID I did not weld for 3 months. As negative as that sounds I must thank you Derbador, I burned some rods and well it could be better.So I broke out some 6013 and will burn the last of that box and tomorrow after my 7018 sit in the rod oven I can undo some of my learned mistakes.

Bro, this vid was extremely helpful!!! I’m that guy that does not know how much to charge!!!. I have my welder & back up welder, torch plasma cutter, etc... but I can’t find it in my heart to charge so much!!! But then I’m like well what the hell did i go to school for.... FUCK!!! Why did I work so hard to buy all these tools for and these assholes think I’m charging TOO much!!!... man I’m like fuck off!!!!!. Lol jeez I’m here ranting and raving lol.
@Ruben9013 жыл бұрын
I would charge either a $50 or $60 rig fee just for showing up. That will cover your fuel costs and using tools (grinder discs, rods, gloves). Then depending on what they want, if you know you can knock out the job within 30 minutes, its up to you if you just have them pay for your rig fee or an additional $20. If its a job that will take half a day, well just remember how much you made hourly at your full time job, that will give you some sort of idea on how to charge and see if your in the competing price or if your overcharging. Nowadays people dont want to pay, but also nowadays there are bad contractors with no references.....think about that

Totally agree on the truck. It is all these "diesel bro's" that are too dumb to measure for the correct front offest wheels that are stuck on the whole dually diesel 4x4 quadcab bullshit. If you are pipelining in the mud and snow then definitely but now all these kids that are jumping into the game start off with this "I need the biggest truck ever" mindset. I have been welding for 31 years and my mobile rig is a 2wd 90 D150 extended cab with a 360, 4 speed auto, steel deck flatbed with a 251 trailblazer repowered with a Honda engine. I can run my hypertherm 900 plaz, my dynasty 210 dx, suitcase, scarf and do pretty much anything I need to along with my gas driven air compressor. I can haul 20' sticks, with the plaz and air compressor I rarely need to run my oxy/acetylene bottles unless I'm heating or bending. Best of all I have it set up so I can remove everything from the bed, trow on the stake sides and use ut as an actual truck too! I am at the point where I don't need 4x4 because I don't want to ceawl around in the shit and mud. I spent enough time beating the shit out of my body as a maritime welder on towboats and fuel barges so now I can pick and choose my jobs. But good luck trying to explain any of this to some rookie pipeliner wannabe with an instagram account.

There seems to be a trend with a lot of welders being really busy. both me and the other guys I know here are so busy we can't even really give people a good answer when trying to schedule a new job. also you were talking about plasma. right now I'm on a project where they want us to carbon arc everything. I asked if we could use a plasma. we are in a box pretty much. about slightly less wide than you are. the carbons smoke so bad my respirator is pretty much clogged up within hour or so. the plasma shoots way less sparks is way faster and doesn't smoke even a fraction as much.

I have a Miller Trailblazer that I bought used. The only problem with it is during the summer after I burn two or three rods I have to shut it off and let it cool down before it will weld again. Generator part still works and machine itself is still running but it will not well until I let it cool down. I put a fan on it one of those high-output fans like Servpro uses it will keep it welding but I can tell that it doesn't want to weld anymore I can feel it I know the machine so well has anyone ever heard of this
