I got top surgery last week so I have some advice too! 1. I had soooo much trapped wind after I woke up from the anaesthetic that I couldn’t eat anything without burping or vomiting, that was for the whole first day so just expect some discomfort in that regard? 2. Make sure you poop before surgery, makes life a lot easier in the long run 3. Button up shirts!! 4. Take the painkillers they tell you to take otherwise you’re gonna regret it lol 5. Hydrate yourself, you may have to pee more but it makes life so much easier being hydrated 6. Mentally prepare yourself beyond everything because you’re going through a major change in your life, it’s going to take time to adjust, especially with the pain you’re going through I hope some of my tips help someone, I wish I’d known a lot of these things before hand!!

They might have put an anti-emetic in your IV if you told them that you have a sensitive stomach. I really stressed the nausea problem to my surgeon and he hooked me up.

Regarding the question, why Grace usually says Ash instead of pronouns. It's something i do as well. My spouse is Nonbinary and they usually prefer singular them. However there exists no singular them in german. "them" basically is the same as "she" and my darling is afab, so it would feel wrong. That's why i started saying their name or "my spouse" or "my partner" when refering to them A LOT. I just prefer doing this then accidentaly outing them to narrowminded jerks or misgendering them. My 2 cents out. Don't know if its partially the same for Grace.

Maik Sowinski actually people created some gender neutral pronouns. I looked it up because I wanted to talk about my partner at the time, who uses they/them or she/her pronouns, and also because I wondered if there was something I liked. But because German is more grammatically complex they were really difficult to use and felt super unorganic. Like, if someone in my life used them I would really try and learn how to use them, but for me personally they wouldn‘t be practical and sound weird? Because there are so many and not really a standard one, that is easy to use, and that even people outside queer circles can understand, like with they/them. Maybe we should invent a pronoun that doesn’t have to be declined! It would not only defy the gender binary but also grammar:D

It sucks that she and they are the same, I wonder if some non binary afabs or just non binary in general people don't mind it because the verb makes it different, e.g. sie heißt (she is called) vs. sie heißen (they are called) because even though we imply a singular they in English we still use the verb form of the plural they. Tbf it would be cool if each language could just adopt a new pronoun for 3rd person singular English because I know plenty of people who struggle to remember to use they because it sounds like they're talking about more than one person e.g. xyz *is* called rather than they *are* called and the equivalent in German/any language with the same problems (xyz being used here in substitute of a pronoun because I didn't want to pick one already kind of in use and I'm not creative enough to come up with something else)

Grace said 'they/them' multiple times before Ash said anything about pronouns, so obviously Grace does use pronouns whenever it's natural to do so... What do people mean when they say there's a lack of pronouns? =/ Obviously it's one thing to talk about someone to a third party, but when the person is right there with you and you're also talking to them as part of the conversation, it makes sense to say 'you' in reference to them or use their name when it makes sense (like 'well for Ash it was' rather than 'well for them it was' when Ash is part of the convo and right there, y'know?) I think Grace speaks quite naturally in terms of referring to Ash personally, to the camera, to differentiate, and as a third person reference. Shoving pronouns in for the sake of it just sounds weird to me, tbh.

I got top surgery 2 weeks ago (DI without drains) and recovery was so easy for me! I still have the binder on for another week but i am able to reach for things, never took any pain meds or slept in a weird schedule. Even when I got home 1 hour post op I sat on the couch and watched tv till midnight and was able to get up myself and sleep normally. So my top surgery recovery was so easy I am v v lucky!

That's awesome, congrats! One other big thing that I'd suggest is to have lots of really smooth, soft foods for afterwards. After my surgery one of the worst things I remember is just how sore my throat was from being intubated... Even the applesauce they gave me to eat before I was discharged just hurt too much. All of that, paired with being a bit nauseous from the anesthesia... I honestly more or less survived on vanilla Ensure shakes for a solid week 😂

Make sure you rush order a binder with Velcro side on it, or a waist trainer. You'll thank me when your medical binder stops smelling nice. You need some baby wipes cause you don't get to bathe for about two weeks. Q tips need to be on your list as well as bactine spray, neosporine with pain killer in it. One of the back pillows with the arms should definitely be on your list as well as medical gauze, and the weird pillow looking gauze in you are having nipple graphs. Anything that weights more than a phone or a PS4 controller is right out the window. Your drains need to be checked and emptied regularly, and just over all don't think that you can wake up and go chase the world. Your going to stink, your going to want to have a shower, your going to feel like you have been hit by an 18 wheeler. But that first breath you take out of surgery with all that weight off of your chest is so worth it.

Ohh boyyyy the pain the pain A little background: I have Ehlers-danlos syndrome, same as your friend Annie Segarra. The "pillows of varying firmness" suggestion is my liiife. I dislocate my ribs easily, and this has been especially true since my foot surgery (a fusion) on the 18th. I have had a rib dislocated for the last ten. days. I have two memory foam pillows, three extra firm, three regular, a lumbar support foam thing, several throw pillows, a body pillow, and a bunch of soft throw blankets that I can stuff into nooks and crannies, like under my neck. If I sleep the slightest bit wrong (the "right" way is a moving target) I will wake up with dislocations or a migraine. I have a migraine about once a week. I am so sorry you've had such bad back pain from the surgery 😢😢 I hope your pain is being treated sufficiently. If you have any questions that have not been explained fully, or pain that is new or more intense than normal, please talk to your doctor or nurses and advocate for yourself. Don't put yourself through that pain like you did with the bandages! I'll be honest, I have an extremely high pain tolerance, but I would have called the doctor the first time it felt uncomfortably tight. If I've learned anything, it's that unnecessary pain can be very dangerous!

Aw I'm sorry your back was so sore! In future, put pillows under and between your knees! Also migraines, I get them a lot. Cold and dark is the way to go. Oh! And if you're sitting and your back is sore, sit on a pillow(if on hard surface) and if you're sitting on a couch or bed, put a pillow just under your butt, not all the way but enough to prop you up man a little forward. 👍

I learned to sleep on my back a few weeks before a surgery for which I knew I would have to. It's just a few nights where it feels weird, but when there's nothing else to worry about it's totally fine. And once I was on the route of recovery being comfortable on my back was a huge relief!

Ugh, migraines are the absolute worst. I've had quite a few. I'm so sorry you had to experience one. In case you get another, the best thing to do is to go into a cool, dark, preferably silent room. So I'm gonna say some things I wish I knew before, but keep in mind I had periareolar and I live in Belgium so I'm just speaking from my experience. 1. All the youtube videos I watched had these reveals and so I thought I only got to see my chest a couple weeks post op but when I was in the awakening room just after surgery and I woke up my first instinct was to look at my nipples and I just did it. there were no bandages or anything so I could see everything. I only had to put two dressings and a binder on when I was in the recovery room with my mom. And even after that I was able to see my chest everyday because a nurse came to take care of it. 2. The first few days nothing was swollen, red or bruised but after a week the skin below my nipple started looking red and it hurt. I thought it was infected so we called the surgeon and I was immediately put on antibiotics and in the evening we went to see the surgeon but there were no signs of infection. He explained to me that they not only take away the mammary gland but also a ligament and that's what was causing the pain. He said that that was totaly normal. 3. Don't expect everything to look right the moment after your surgery. If you're like me you panic about every little change but the recovery takes up to three months, so before that don't worry to much about how it looks. 4. It's okay to take your binder off sometimes (if your surgeon told you so). The doctors did tell me that but I wanted to be safe and kept it on for two weeks before taking it off. Just take it off for like an hour and breathe. 5. This one won't be for everyone but it happened to me so it might happen to you too. My surgeon told me at first that I had to wear the binder for six weeks and I also couldn't exercise for that period of time. But after my consultation after my surgery he said that it was healing pretty well and said that I only had to wear it for four weeks :). I'm just saying this in case you like me are really not looking forward to wearing that thing for so long (mind you I had surgery in the summer, so not the ideal time to wear two layers). 6. Speaking of summer, don't be dumb like me and have your surgery in the summer when you have exams. I had surgery June sixth and my first exam was June seventh. I was able to post pone my exam but I still had to take an exam on June ninth. This put a lot of stress on me because I wasn't able to study much and I could barely get to my school. 7. If you had drains like me I'm just going to say it but that shit hurts so much to take out. I read somewhere that it feels tingly. It doesn't. I hurts so so much, but I found a trick to lesser the pain. Take a deep breath and when the nurse pulls it out you blow on the top of your hand. Also I thought the piece of drain that was in me was small but it's about as large as where it is put in you to your nipple. I don't want to scare anyone but I think it's better to know the truth than sitting in pain and complete shock after the first one and having to do a second. 8. Next the pain medication. Do not wait until you are in pain again to take your medication. Have a routine! That way you are never in pain :). 8. Lastly as I said I am pretty paranoid so I didn't move my arms for one bit during the healing process. So when I could move my arms above my shoulders again I wasn't able to because they hadn't moved for a month. You can't move your arms a lot but please do it a little bit, just make sure they don't go above your shoulders and you should be fine. Also when you can start moving a bit just take it slow like Cameron said in the video like for example don't start running right away but start with walking.

💕 I’m now 5 days post top surgery. I totally agree with the rollercoaster ride. Pain hasn’t been that bad, except I feel the stitches pull occasionally when I get out of bed or move too quickly. It’s s great reminder not to do too much too soon though.🤪 Pillows are my friends right now as well as my medical reacher/grabber. Especially for picking things up that I drop on the floor or can’t reach, as I have T-Rex arms. 🦖 Also, my back scratcher has come in handy as the ace wrap itches like crazy on my back.

Recovery from surgery is a lot of ups and downs. I had adenomyosis (disease of the uterus) cured by a hysterectomy. Oh boy. The two days, I was in pain of course but I was SO happy to be cured that it just felt like I got beat up *a little* It was Day 3 that was rough. The next week adter that, also rough. 😖 No energy. The body takes time to come down from such high stress and when you are down, damn you are DOWN.

Try moving your arm around as well - when you raise your arm up it moves that “shoulder blade” and you might be able to get into those muscles under it ... or if you can get an actual massage from a professional lol

Ugh yeah the backpain is horrid, I wish I had thought of sleeping sitting up hugging pillows... I had to get up multiple times a night and getting up was very painful and I would have to walk around for a while to loosen my back up. The worst part for me was the drains though. I just smelled bad all the time and my cats kept almost stepping on them and it was excruciating getting the right side out the second most painful thing I've ever experienced (the first being a terrible flu I got some years back). We also should have practiced using an ace bandage beforehand cuz apparently my partner just did not know how to use one and the first time getting wrapped up after taking a shower had me crying from the anxiety of the person who is supposed to be taking care of me can't take care of me. I also vomited a lot the first day after surgery.

I had surgery 2 weeks ago. I wish I knew that I'd be so bloated after that I'd look heavily pregnant for the next 9 days 😂😂 For me the worst pain was having to take off sticky dressings and tape off. Personally I felt very little pain other than that. I stopped pain killers the day after, and felt completely back to my normal self (walking around my house and stuff) 3 days after. A plus is that my sleeping has never been better, I think because I'm forced to stay to still 😂
