I've lived in Vancouver and currently in Portland. They are indeed very different. I don't think the 'Couve deserves the hate it gets. It's more suburbia than Portland and that fits exactly what some people need. Portland proper or all of its suburbs, there's something that will hopefully fit your lifestyle. The strength of Vancouver is that while being a Portland suburb, it's got different tax options. It's one of the nice things about living along a state border.

Vancouver has way less homelessness than Portland, and is much safer. The only thing Portland has better is nightlife, otherwise it has much more weird people, crime, homelessness, drugs, higher taxes, worse traffic, less police presence, less new development and I could go on and on. That is why so many people are leaving Portland and going to Vancouver. PDX's population is dropping while Vancouver's in rising for a reason. Also, property prices have gone up much more in Vancouver vs. Portland in the past 5 years.

I loved living in the Couve back in the day, but it's definitely not for everyone. Comparisons with Portland are nonsensical if you ask me. Portland is Batman, and Vancouver is Robin. One is the 24th largest city in America, the other is its largest suburb. Together with Salem, they form the 19th largest combined metro area in the country, just one big family.
