He clearly had a high level of awareness. It follows that he understood the need to deflect criticism from Elizabeth by bringing it on himself with the comments he made. To put it in entertainment terms, he played the funny man to Elizabeth's straight man. Or maybe he just thought "what are they going to do, fire me?" Either way, totally based.

Prince Philip visited our navy highschool in the early 90s. We had nothing but old soviet hand me downs from the 60-70s . Talked to us a lot, had a look at our barracks (was shocked at our blankets , which he thought were for animals) , had a look at our sail boats (2 for 60+ boys) . Came, shook hands, went away. We expected the same we would get from a minister/president/admiral visit. Week of hard work cleaning followed by a free day . That is not what would happen. The very next month we started getting stuff. Army blankets totaly new, new radios, PCs (we had 2 old ones for the whole school), then older boys would go to UK on exchanges fir the summer. We would have trips to UK to see modern and historical ships. We got books , knives and other gear. The prince was a great man.

One story I remeber about Philip was that once when he visited the white house he snuck away from the party to have drinks with the waiting and serving staff and was reportedly very candid and down to earth with them. My uncle met him and didn’t even realise. They were on one of their visits to Australia and my uncle (in his early teens) was riding his push bike home from doing some fishing. It looks like a pattern, tbh. Queen Mother was based af (she is still my most favourite royal, by far) but her husband, King George VI was the king (and not a bad one). Prince Phillip was a madlad but his wife, Queen Elizabeth II was the queen (and exceptional one). Cannot have another "Dirty Berty" on the throne, sadly, and I really miss that swagger and charisma pre-WWII monarchy had. Prince Phillip revived it, at least a bit. He was real, down-to-earth and I think a lot of people felt that real connection with him, unlike other royals or politicians (LOL). He was a men's man first and royalty second.

She was the straight man to Philip’s funny man although she too did have some rare one liners and based moments herself. Like during the Olympics in England when she death stared a camera man for watching her pick her Finger nails or at a gathering when someone was being obnoxious and talking over her she shouted “Why does he have to be so loud!” On the more sentimental side one of the last things she did before her passing she “met” with Paddington Bear for her grand kids and great grandkids.

He and the Queen were the only ones in the royal family that I had any level of respect for. They were a different generation, and despite their high positions, seemed like relatively down to Earth people, though of the two I would imagine Philip was the most down to Earth because he wasn't the Queen. She had a mask she had to wear while in public and when the cameras were rolling. Had to be nice to people no matter what kind of painful comments they made or stupid questions they asked. No wonder she didn't make it to a hundred, it's a wonder she made it to 50 with those expectations. Dealing with people is extremely stressful and the Prince was like comic relief. He didn't give a shit, if he had something out of pocket to say, by God he was going to say it. The mass cricket bat bludgeoning thing is the pinnacle of that. He said what was on his mind, and sure, maybe it was inappropriate, and maybe both him and the Queen were supposed to stay out of politics, but honestly I think more people need to hear that.
@erinirvine7588
@erinirvine7588 3 ай бұрын
@lsswappedcessna How exactly do you know they were down to Earth? You don't because we don't know them. I don't care which one of them it is the monarchy shouldn't exist in this day and age. I remember seeing the old queen giving a speech in front of a golden fricking piano. That is excessive wealth when some of us peasants have to go to food banks. When she finally died, they should have ended it right there and then.
@haydencapps
@haydencapps 3 ай бұрын
@@erinirvine7588do you honestly think you'd be any less broke if the monarchy was ended? The US doesn't have a monarchy, people there are still broke. One has nothing to do with the other. If you're really looking for the problem, look for the people that create and control the money and charge compounding interest. With a system like that, declining value of the money is inevitable and all of the declining value goes to them. That's a bigger factor than even the entire government itself, though they are related issues.

My favourite Prince Philip story was told to me by a navy man whose base was visited by Philip. According to this bloke, when there's a royal visit or an inspection from the top brass, it's pretty common for the base commander to choose an out of the way alley and put all the rubbish bins, junk, etc down it, then barricade it off to keep all the messy stuff out of sight. The thing was, as Philip was an old Navy hand, he knew all about this trick, so on this royal visit he saw the barricade and, for a laugh, said "Ooh, what's down here then?" and marched straight towards the garbage alley with the base commander frantically trying to work out how to stop him and get him back on track.

I Was serving at 43 Commando years ago, back then Philip was our commandant general. The unit we were at was being renamed and Philip was there to do the dedication. We were holding the dedication in the senior rates mess. The lads were in a big circle having a chuckle with HRH....then one of the units Sergeant Majors bounced over (black guy, really good bloke, really animated but quite loud and brash) cracks a shit joke and then moves on. Philip turns to us all.....blows air through his cheeks and with raised eyebrows says "well.......I suppose we let one slip through the net every now & then!" His sharp tongue and willingness to challenge the status quo, often with a playful or provocative edge, would have earned him high regard in the digital age as the "King of Trolls." My ex-girlfriend was a journalist and her editor at the time told us this story about when he was younger journalist and he did a bit of "undercover" photography (before the term Paparazzi was used) and one assignment entailed him sneaking into Sandringham, the Royal Family's Christmas residency, as he wanted to get an exclusive photo of the famous, yet always kept private, Royal Boxing Day shoot. So he dressed in camouflage, sneaked in and hid in some bushes waiting to get a pic. There were the Royals and their chums happily blasting hapless gamebirds into oblivion with a few security types hanging about. So he remained well hidden and out of sight while snapping the odd pic with his long range lens. Suddenly he felt something hard and cold press into the back of his neck. Of course he jumped round to only face Prince Philip himself pointing a double barrelled shot gun right in his face! As it was a bitterly cold Boxing Day a single drip of snot formed on Philips nose and hung momentarily from his nostrils before dripping to the ground as Philip simply snarled "Why don't you just fuck right orrrf?"
