Things That Piss Off People from Washington, D.C.

When we travel we make mistakes and sometimes we don't even realize we make them. Sometimes those mistakes can upset the locals. Here we go through four things that tourists say and do that upset the locals in Washington DC. From standing on the wrong side of the escalator to making jokes about DC's chances of becoming a state and a couple more.

As a District resident, I concur with everything said here! I'll never forget that one time at the L'Enfant Plaza metro station when I saw an old lady pick up a stranger's toddler who was blocking the left side of the escalator and gently placed him on the right side with his distracted family. There was a collective "Thank you" from all the people held up below.

Solid recommendations. Another I'd add: don't forget to include the "quadrant" info when you give/receive addresses in DC. The streets are on a mostly-grid of letters and numbers (crossed diagonally by mostly state names) followed by a directional quadrant: NW, NE, SW, and SE. Without knowing the quadrant, you could end up in exact opposite of where you're intending to go.

absolutely! I used to be a tour guide on the mall and I can't tell you the number of times guests got lost because they went to the wrong quadrant.

Never ask a follow up question to your first question of "What kind of work do you do?" There's a reasonable chance that they can't tell you what they do or maybe even where they work because of security issues. If their first answer is nebulous or vague, accept it and move on. We get used to NOT talking about work when we are in social settings.

As a general rule don’t ask questions in a casual social setting in any location not just D.C. In human interaction with strangers, positive phrases and short small talk. That’s it.

Though on the flip side of this…remember the year Trader Joe’s made their Christmas bags look like burn bags for classified documents? Try putting those out on the curb on recycling day full of old newspapers or junk mail and see what kind of reaction that gets. 😂

Thank you! As a local - that elevator thing is important. At places where Green/Yellow line intersects with Blue/Orange/Silver line, locals are trying to catch our connections. Same with the Red/Green line at Gallery Place. If we hear our train coming and we can't get down the escalator, we miss our connection. Remember, DC has not been on its normal schedule since the new 7000 series trains were taken out of service and the impact of the pandemic. Most locals also get tired of hearing about politics because we live here. It doesn't matter which party is in office, its the same process regardless. We still gotta get to work. I love the national mall, but you are right - that's a huge place. You can't even see everything in a day. As a former museum worker, I'd tell tourist - take your time and enjoy. The best sites are free. Your tax dollars at work. Enjoy. Thank you for this post. Just watched and I love it!

DC local here. One of the things that really Iris me is when people are in Union Station and they stand right in the middle of where everyone needs to walk. There are computers needing to get to work or need to catch a train and you blocking the path is a real pain.

YES! Blocking a doorway is so inconsiderate and nobody wants to spend more time in Union Station than absolutely necessary.

That doesn't go only for DC but for everywhere. Most of the time I don't care whether you stand on the left of the right in a corridor or something, but don't stand in the middle. That facebook or instagram post can wait the one second you need to take two steps to one or the other side.

As a fifth generation Washingtonian all four are true. The one annoying thing to me is when tourist (we LOVE visitors) using the Metro's escalators stand on the left side. Unless you are either walking up or down the moving escalator, please stand on the right side. Welcome to Washington!!!

I’m from Singapore and it’s stand on left. It is generally the same as road traffic - which side do you overtake, don’t stand on that side. The best is observe and do as the locals do.

I grew in suburban DC in MD 1) Do not wear any Dallas Cowboys gear 2) Do not wear any Pittsburgh Penguins gear 3) Learn the Metro system 4) Do not drive in the city. 5) Park at a metro station outside the city 6) like Walter said Do not talk politics 7) Do not bad mouth Joe Gibbs. He is a hero in this town. 8) Do not act like a tourist. People will try to take advantage of you. 9) Do not skip Ben’s chili bowl and Ledos pizza I think that’s it.

"Let's meet at the Smithsonian ".... I'd not only add which museum, but whether you are meeting on the Mall side or Street side. These buildings are huge! I typically park to the South of the Smithsonians so I'd likely meet you on the street side of the Freer, Castle or Air & Space but on the Mall side of the National History, Natural History, National Gallery muesums (these names all sound alike so you can really see the confusion). My wife and I once spent 20 minutes trying to find each other in the Endi Haupt gardens; lovely place to be lost 🌼 🌷 🌳 🪴 🌱 🌿 🌾 🏵 🐦

In a similar spirit as the escalator point: do not stop your family of five in the middle of the side walk because you’re lost and block the entire sidewalk so people have to stand and wait for you to get your bearings. it’s very rude. If you were at your grocery store at home I don’t think you would appreciate it if an entire family obliviously blocked an aisle because they were lost. Even if you are lost, be considerate of your surroundings. If you need time to regroup, stand to one side of the sidewalk, sit on a bench, or go in a store so you can look at a map or ask someone for directions.

For #1 alone; Thank you, Thank you Thank you. DCites are very friendly and helpful. The attitude is that, if we can help you find where you want to go, you'll stop clogging up our sidewalks. Don't be surprised if, when you're standing staring at your maps, a local approaches to offer help. There's also different "Jackets" (I think it was Yellow Jackets in Adams Morgan and Red Coats around National Gallery, but I might have reversed them) to give directions and help.

I'm not sure if others agree, but if renting an electric scooter (Uber, Helbiz, Lime, etc.), please don't ride on the sidewalks. It says it right there on the scooter before you start moving.

I took one of Rob's D.C. tours and it was absolutely fantastic. One of the best tours I've gotten to date. We got so much more out of the monuments and in a much shorter time then if we'd of just gone to all of them ourselves and attempted to understand what we were seeing.

That and the rule-followers who stand at the corner waiting for the little green "It's OK To Walk" guy to appear. DC folks cross the road when we see an opportunity, we've got places to go! 🙂. Nice video! Good tips, especially the parts about elevator etiquette and directions for the Smithsonian museums. But re. giving directions, the single funniest/worst example I ever heard was a guy trying to meet up with his friends who kept telling them over the phone that he was "by the flags." While in DC. On the National Mall. On THE 4TH OF JULY. Gonna have to be a little more specific there, Buddy.

I agree with everything said in this video. One other thing I notice as a local is that there is often a lot of traffic downtown, and a lot of it is caused by tourists who don’t know where they are going. Just a recommendation to make sure you know where you are going when you leave.

I visited D.C. for the first time in May and the escalator thing weighed heavily on me when I first landed. I basically let other people go ahead of me on the escalators at the Metro stations and just followed their example.

I have two adult children who live in DC so I visit frequently. I totally agree with the comment about standing on the left. It is super annoying! I would add another tip, don’t try to get on the Metro when people are getting off and don’t stop at the bottom of the escalators. But do ask for help if you need it.

Went to Washington DC in 1999, first time in the US, did all the touristy things like visiting the Lincoln memorial etc, visited a shopping centre called Crystal City as well. Was pre 911 so was able to go on a tour of the Hoover FBI building and the Pentagon, not sure if you can now. Was amazed that you went through these double doors at the Pentagon and there was a shopping centre for employees. Used the metro a lot which was really efficient and clean and everyone was friendly.

I think it has a lot of history, so Americans will enjoy it more than foreign tourists. I went in March to enjoy sakuras. It is also nice just to walk around residential areas and soak in beautiful neighborhoods. Also, Alexandria and other suburbs.

Also, don't stand on the Metro escalators with a hand on each handrail, blocking passage on the left. My uncle once got spoken to for doing that. I once asked a school group to please stand to the right on the escalator. The chaperone said, "We're all trying to stay together." I responded, "Then please stay together to the right so that people can pass on the left." She seemed shocked that people would expect them to do that. This is a working city, folks. It's not Disney Land.

As someone who’s lived in DC for a few years, I agree especially about the escalator. It’s frustrating when you’re rushing to work or another errand and people are blocking your path. I’d also add it’s rude to ask a stranger or even an acquaintance about their ethnicity or race. This might not be the case in some parts of the US or in certain other countries, so I thought it might be worth mentioning.

As someone who lives in the suburbs of Md (5-10 min outside of DC) one thing that is slightly annoying is the assumption that we know all the downtown dc tourist attractions. When in fact, we don’t tend to visit downtown every weekend or even that often. I’ve really only gone to The Mall when family from out of town want to visit downtown or for some type of assignment/job.

The one about the escalators would apply anywhere. With things like this there are those that roll their eyes and say that it's only a minor delay and that those of us that don't like it should just get over it. To me the delay is annoying, sure, but that's not the worst part. The most irritating thing about the way they're inconveniencing me and a bunch of other people is that they're doing it for no reason whatsoever. At worst it's some kind of a petty power trip. At best, and more common, is that they are so oblivious to anybody that's outside of their little bubble that they genuinely have no idea that they're bothering anybody.

Well I have a story went to DC in early.April,riding the bus go eat and a guy got on the bus and was mad i was apparently in his seat,he treatened to stab me with a knife ,im 6-4 and 280 my son with me 6-2 340,he was not right in his head,the bus was full and all eyes was on me !!,lets just say god has blessed me with a calm deminor,and someone was looking out for thst guy this day besides that was a great trip!!

I’m from Arlington VA and I live only 10 minutes from DC so I come to downtown/DC frequently to see things and some of my top things are the Smithsonian’s are usually free and very good. Going to Nats Park very good prices. The metro is so much better than driving and so convenient. This is for the Americans that are watching going on a tour of the Capitol and the White House is so easy just put a request in with your congressman or your senator and wait to see if you get it and the best part is that it’s free. I did it over Christmas and it was just amazing. Things I wouldn’t talk about unless you want to get into some trouble. Saying that the Commanders are some awful and your like me a Giants fan be prepared to get roasted and they won’t accept that your right. Overall DC is great I love visiting from across the river

Oh!! Take his escalator advice IN ANY CITY WITH A SUBWAY!! I am aware that 90% of Americans live in cities w/o a train system, but damn you don't need to stand right next to your friend/significant other/child on the elevator. People are scrambling to work, their next train, or just like the exercise. Get the hell out the way!! As a DC resident for 10 years, #1 is the only one I care about. No one here actually thinks we're going to get the right to vote in anything but the Presidential elections. Perhaps the weirdest thing that's happened to me is I ended up near the Washington monument in a button down and a cringeworthy tourist assumed I worked for government and was a plain clothes secret service agent. Also, a lot of people in the city will be down to talk politics but you've got to lead into the subject and not have some cookie cutter view from some talk radio or news channel. You become a political realist after spending a few months here. The idealism fades away fast.

It’s because the DC metro station escalators are very long (The six longest escalators in the western hemisphere are all in DC metro stations), so it’s ingrained in local culture that you MUST stand right and walk left.

You can't do justice to even one of the museum's of the Smithsonian in one day. If you do decide to meet at one of them be very explicit on where you will meet. For instance at a specific entrance or exhibit.

I live in the DC area, the escalator thing is definitely true. The other stuff, I’ve never encountered or really dealt with. I’ve literally never heard anyone talk about the taxation without representation. If someone brought it up neither myself or my friends would care, or really get into it. Literally no one has ever mistaken us for working in politics. I used to be a cop and now work in Human services. The biggest thing is traffic, and rush hour. It’s one of the worst in the country. Avoid driving if you can, and definitely avoid rush hour (3-7). Stay out of the left lane if you drive under 80! The 95 corridor veers off to many different 95’s like 295, 395, a few different 495s, know where you are going. People are always shocked by the tent cities everywhere and the amount of homelessness in DC. Definitely get a slice a Jumbo pizza if you can. Georgetown cupcake is extremely overrated, and the line can get crazy. There are some bakeries close by that are way better, and don’t have the crazy lines. There is one metro stop for the Smithsonian(don’t be confused by this video). Most of the different museums are walking distance from each other, except the zoo (my favorite). The zoo is free but charges $20 to park.

For people visiting America who may not know: Do not joke that you or someone else is there to kidnap or harm the president. Do not do that. If someone who hears you and knows roughly who you are takes it seriously and reports it, your vacation plans may be interrupted by an interview with the Secret Service. If you're actually in DC, they need to take that stuff quite seriously.

On the Smithsonian though I'd think most folks would think of the castle as it seems to be the main building as I believe it doesn't have a separate title like the other facilities. "the castle' is the castle, 'the smithsonian' is the insitituion. the castle is mostly offices, so it's kind of odd to meet there if you're going to walk many blocks away to a different museum anyway.

I'm going to DC soon. I assume there's elevators to get to the metro. Right? My daughter hasn't mastered getting on and off escalators without holding an adults hand. Sure you can squeeze past her, but she still loses her balance easily and will fall if bumped.

There are elevators but they frequently are not at the main entrance and are very slow. They’re intended for disabled people so consider putting her on the step behind you no holding her hand that way. It’s doable.

I’ve lived here for 48 years. They care if it’s being discussed. If you tell a DC resident that DC should not be a state and then don’t at least follow up with a way to provide equal voting rights, anyone who was born here (a possible caveat) will think you’re a Trumpist douche.

@@JM-fr5ge I would add that if a visitor did say "meet at The Smithsonian", most would probably assume the Smithsonian Castle. Funny thing is most locals have probably never been in the castle, myself included, but I think to outsiders it is the most iconic of buildings. Being a little older myself, we always went on field trips to Air & Space(always get an ice cream!) and Natural History.

I know I am in the minority on this but the escalator thing. I use public transit in the Bay Area and people losing their crap over the escalator because they gotta be somewhere. Everyone has to be somewhere, that's why we're on the train. But these are the same folks who won't stand clear of doors to allow people to exit, then board. Folks who are larger, walk with an cane, have a child in hand do not like being knocked into because you want to climb the escalator. Use the stairs if you are in such a hurry.
