One thing I've wanted to try out ever since I heard Walter Murch describe it is what he called "worldizing". Basically. You take two tape recorders to a space. Usually the biggest most echo-y they could find. And on one of the tape decks you have the source sound. You play that back on a loudspeaker at double or quadrouple speed. It'll be high pitched and wrong sounding. But. Far away, in the same space. You have the second tape deck. It's recording from a microphone and its tape speed matching the playback deck. The resulting recording, when played back at normal speed should have the source sound pitch corrected. Plus whatever warbling that got accentuated during the high speed rerecording. But also, it'll have the reverb of the room. But all the distances have been doubled or quadroupled. So a warehouse rerecording space sounds absolutely ginormous. Then, you layer on the source tape without the worldizing and mix until it's just as messy or intelligible as you want.

Awesome, wish I hadn’t thrown all my old tape decks away when I got minidiscs.

@TheSemtexCow I used them sometimes in shuffle to get random noises popping up here and there like in this jam published 5 years ago kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqusqHxnbLmXjJYsi=v9FMKd1XFPsYUpqJ

It’s like you’re in my head. It’s kinda empty and spooky in there, I guess… thanks for this video! A great collection of stuff I have yet to try with my tapes.

@@audiowanderer I found a couple dozen reels in my garage that i put there 25 years ago and forgot. They’re from a radio station I helped clear out and they’re of various people doing long reads from the Bible. Those might be good for fun mischief.
