That's really cool. I remember when I was a little girl we went to The old farmhouse my great-grandparents (this was in the mid-90s) and they how to hold Barber style shaving kit in there for my uncle it was really cool. And of course my grandfather had something similar to it and he had a whole bunch of things like old pocket knives and I believe some old watches and stuff like that the stuff from the 50s and 60s and lots of model planes. That's why I love watching pawn Stars in American pickers. But I would say my love for past Americana comes from watching iron Giant when I was a kid. It was such an unusual Lee good movie and it took place when my parents were growing up. I wouldn't want to live back then but I can really appreciate it learning about the history

My Dad taught me at a very young age "Always have a watch, pen, and pocket knife with you". If you work for someone and are paid an hourly wage, you need to carry a watch. That way, you know when start/ stop time is and you can keep track of how much time you've put in and you don't cheat your employer OR yourself out of time/pay. You also needed a Pen to fill out your time card/sheet or to make notes of what you needed to do for the day. And pocket knives were used for many things. I still carry all of those things to this day and I'm 67. I've worked with hundreds of people (both old and young) who were never taught this and are constantly asking to borrow a pen, or knife, or what the time is. (even though my 2 Sons were taught this, they never carry any of those items, LOL).

Even being a millennial, as a kid, I always used to and still carry a notepad, a pen, a stick of gum, and change. As I am getting older, I still carry around a flask, a pocket knife, and a hankerchief. I used to smoke, too, so a Zippo and a pack of cigarettes were on my person, as well.

THE UNIFORM of a kid in the early 1960's.....thick scratchy denim jeans with the cuffs rolled up....denim repair patches ironed on the knees, a pull-over shirt with horizontal stripes, "Keds" brand high top sneakers, a white rabbits foot on a small chain hooked to the belt loop of your jeans, HAIRCUT: very short with the front left longer so you had some hair to comb back and....rubbing that cinnamon smelling waxy stick on your hair to keep the front part in place. INSIDE POCKETS: Usually not more than 25 cents , a boy scout pocket knife, possibly a few rocks that look cool and maybe a fire ball or a stick of gum.

Uh, we had Mastercard, American Express, BankAmericard (later became VISA) and store specific charge cards way before 'portable' phones and tech came out. We also had gas charge cards. Credit cards have been around since the 1950's.

Hey there. I am a 3rd generation handkerchief user. My grandfathers, and my father, had a stack of handkerchiefs in their chest of drawers. I have/and still use handkerchiefs to this very day, mine are in assorted colors. Where back in the day, they were strictly white linen. "You never know when you are going to need some Liquid Courage." Well, I am also a 3rd Generation man who's need for Liquid Courage spanned 24 hours and then some. Thankfully, it's been 24 years since I have taken a tipple !! There was a time, when as kids, we were mandated to go buy cigarettes for our parents at the local corner store, then grocery store, then convenience store. What's worse was when your mother asked you to go buy her feminine hygiene products !! Oh the embarrassment.

It often depends on where I'm going, but 90% of the time I still carry keys, pocket knife, wear a watch, have a billfold with some cash, change in my pocket, carry a handkerchief, lighter and cigarettes, a pen and notebook, wear a hat, and carry mints instead of gum. I do have a cell phone, but seldom carry it and as of this moment, I'm not even sure where it is. After all, I got by for over 60 yrs. without one.

I'm a walker and kept a small nice leather fanny pack I found at a thrift store and hide under my old school camp style shirts when out walking. Hands free is nice. I'm retired, get outdoors and walk daily. I add or subtract cards, some cash and whatever to this fanny pack. I absolutely HATE carrying my dumbed-down android cell phone but put it in my jeans pocket. Oh, and I carry a clean hankie and wear a watch.

6:52 A common misconception today is that Prohibition made drinking illegal. No. Prohibition made the production, transport, and sale of alcohol illegal but NOT the consumption. So the wealthy could afford to stockpile *massive* amounts before it took effect, then party at leisure. [W.C. Fields once showed Groucho Marx the stockpile in his attic; Groucho, astounded at the (current value about $20K), said, "Bill, what are you doing with all this booze? We haven't had prohibition in 20 YEARS!" Fields replied, "It might come back."

I leave the house every single day with a full set of keys for the car, house, office, post office box, safe deposit box, and etc. I carry a checkbook with some credit cards in my back pocket. I carry cash, change, lip balm, a pen, and a pocket knife in my front pocket. I always wear a watch. I'm required by my work to carry a cell phone all the time, otherwise I probably wouldn't.

There were little metal matchbook holders on keyrings. I' m sure plenty of people have keys and pocket knives....I do. In school ( 1970s), I had one of those odd plastic coin holders that you would squeeze to open....every one I remember owning had a company name on it. Freebies from the State Fair. Change for payphones, lunch money or a vending machine.

As a former railroad man I alwys had my Hamilton 992-B pocket watch on me. In a heavy 10Ct. gold case it was accurate as heck. It did run a little fast, though. It gained 15 seconds a week so I set it back a minute every month. 😊

Most still carry keys, some wear watches, many read newspapers & carry change for parking meters & some use notepads & pens (many don’t use apps for notes). You make it seem like these things are now ancient & nonexistent. That’s absurd. Fortunately, most don’t use handkerchiefs anymore (except old people), and instead of carrying around cigarettes, people carry vapes. Pocket knives have been replaced by mace, stun-guns or a firearm (the latter depending on State laws.)
