For the souvenir thing: Every time we went to Disney, our parents said we could each get one souvenir per trip, and that if what we asked for was too expensive, we had to pick something else. When we got older, we were also allowed to spend our own money if we wanted more souvenirs. We always bought it on the last day so we knew what we wanted by then. I honestly don’t see how the “pulling toys out of your purse thing” would work. My brother and I were far from spoiled, but we always wanted to buy something at the park, that was part of the fun of getting a souvenir for us.

When my family went to Disney when I was 8 (about 17 years ago), we stayed at a value resort (all star movies) for most of the trip while we were primarily in the parks anyways and then moved to a deluxe (wilderness lodge) for a couple of days at the end and spent more time at the resort as a break towards the end of the trip. That way we were able to really enjoy the unique parts of the deluxe resort (walking distance to the Hoop De Doo Review, pony rides, unique pools and playgrounds, table service restaurant, etc) and had my cousin and her son who lived near by come to visit us on a day in the resort too.

She is a musical theater kid and we are from up north, so she loved it even though she was a little bit older. We were there for 3 days and each day we got a special snack. The first day it was super hot and we each got a small dole whip. The next day we shared a churro and the last day she chose a Mickey soft pretzel. We ate breakfast at the hotel and got 7/11 food for a late supper on the walk back to the hotel. We did eat lunch in the parks but we never went hungry. Disney meals are huge! I spent less then 40$ and I think it was her favorite part of the trip.

I found a great that for next year I found a hotel outside of the park for $40 a night that we already have booked for just my husband and I. A 10 minute drive is way better than spending a hundred a night

When your "kiddos" outgrow them, you can skip all the "kiddo" attractions, which can be a colossal waste of time in the eyes of most adolescents and teens, e.g. hours of character meet and greet lines, hours waiting to get into rides like Dumbo, Aladdin's Magic Carpets, etc. One of the weaknesses of this channel is that it sometimes comes across as focusing entirely on families with "kiddos" -- toddlers, pre-adolescents, etc., with limited and very limiting palates, little tolerance for thrill rides, etc. (That, and the primary focus on WDW, as well, while there are Disneylands elsewhere.) I get it, I really do. My children used to be "kiddos" like that, too. Until the time they graduate college, I have devoted and will continue to devote our family vacations to their enjoyment, so for a few years that meant standing in meet and greet lines with their autograph books and dining at places that absolutely had to have pizza, chicken nuggets, and mac and cheese. However, they're teens now, soon enough going to be off at college. And while it's okay to be an adult who's "in touch with the child within" or "who can enjoy the wonderful Magic of Disney", you never want to be the parent of older kids who strongly pine for the days when they were cute and cherubic over enjoying them as they are today, the kind of parent who likes (loves?) the kiddos they used to be more than the older, gawkier, but really impressive teens they are now, if only you'd pay attention. Other channels like DIS Unplugged demonstrate that there's a lot for older kids and even adults-only to enjoy at WDW and Disneyland. A benefit at Disneyland of being an AP member and SoCal resident, for example, is realizing that another strategy for skipping attractions is to realize that you don't have to spend an entire day at Disneyland and do a lot of things but that you can target only one or two things, spend only half a day there and leave, and then come back in a few weeks to catch something else. Toddlers ("kiddos") may not like it, but adults and even some teens understand and appreciate deferred gratification, which is effectively what doing multiple short Disneyland visits is about.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Disney without the Carousel of Progress. I go every time I am there. It’s epic. I recently read that Disney will never get rid of it because it was Walt Disney’s favorite too!

Great tip on eating fewer meals at “in between” times. We give the kids a small breakfast in our room (timeshare off property, so small kitchen), then we eat lunch promptly at 11. Most places are just opening for lunch then, so there’s no wait, and we are eating while rides have long waits. (We do sit-down lunch to get out of the heat; Liberty Tree Tavern at MK is a favorite for us.) Then we are done when everyone else is eating, and ride waits dip down a bit, plus we’re refreshed from the air conditioning. We eat dinner around 4 with no wait, and by the time we’re done, lines for rides are starting to diminish while restaurants start getting busy for dinner. We’ll usually grab a snack at some point for the kids, but we adults are fine without. We carry our own water bottles and add electrolyte packets to them, so we stay pretty happy and comfortable even when it’s really hot. The only tough part about this is timing fast passes so they don’t interfere, but I’m constantly shifting/changing those day-of.

Rope drop is amazing. We got 15 rides done( mine train, Peter Pan , Winnie the Pooh , space Mountain, etc) and later that day we were lucky if we got one done in an hour. So don’t miss out on this opportunity!!

We get hoppers. Go to the EMH park til it gets crowded then go to the (Disney value) resort for a break, and to a different park at dinnertime.

On our trip with our 4 year-year-old granddaughter, I bought a pack of glow sticks at the Dollar Store before we went (I bought on pack for every night we would be in the parks). When the vendors with all the light up toys came out, I brought out the glow sticks. She was perfectly happy with them, and with 12 in each pack, she could share with other kids.
@jimlooney47015 жыл бұрын
Souvenirs -- you can order them from Shop Disney before going to WDW, but you did not mention that Target and Walmart each have some clothes, plush characters, etc. These stores are cheaper than at Disney, have tags showing they are authorized and official Disney products. Get glow sticks before making the trip to WDW - they are cheap at dollar stores. Handy for nighttime events & much cheaper than buying them off a cart. Particularly for those of us with some height, get ponchos at either dollar stores or Walmart -- they are sturdier than those sold in the parks.

I find your advice very useful and informative. For example, I think the idea of "cutting" through the stores along Main Street after rope drop is terrific. I now do it all the time! Thanks!

As far as souvenirs, it’s worth checking out the Disney outlet stores around Orlando. My family and I went to one at a mall nearby our hotel and they have lots of park items at discounted prices. We left with two sweatshirts, some ears, and a Star Wars toy for my brother. All at least 30% off, many were more discounted.

Do not hit Flight of Passage at rope drop, wait until the afternoon where the standby line time is A LOT shorter (and what I mean is that you’ll wait only 1.5 hr instead of 3 hr). Advice is to get a fast pass for Flight of Passage in the afternoon, and hit the Rivers of Navi at rope drop. you won’t have any line bc everyone’s going to Flight of Passage.
@michelle15 жыл бұрын
Best choice, if you are able - Navi River FP+ in morning, rope drop for Flight and you are done with both by about 10, depending on your Navi FP+. I never saw the Flight of Passage line below 3 hours after 10 am, but I have only gone during the summer, when the crowds are pretty full.

If you are used to staying at a Deluxe resort, moving down is a BIG difference. This past Christmas I decided to save money and stay at the Caribbean with the Skyliner access verses Christmas week rates at Beach/Yacht - which are obnoxious Christmas week - we decided to stay 9 nights this year and it was just too over the top(we go every Christmas and have always paid the rates could not stomach it this year). The skyliner access was good, but definitely next time that we want to save money I will be choosing Swan or Dolphin - which would have been less than the Caribbean. The room, pool, the food and the service at the Caribbean were OK - just was not the same feel. Also, no comparison to the Deluxe resorts with the Christmas decor and theming. I generally am able to snag decent rates at the Beach/Yacht other times of the year that we go. We tend to spend a lot of time at the pool and resort - not a full day park person (my husband actually never will even get out of bed to hit the parks first thing - my daughter and I go on our own to beat the crowds) - we like to go in and out of the parks. I can get a lot done first thing in the morning or the evenings. Really like the EPCOT location. We tend to go 2 or 3 times a year and I have discovered buying Passholder tickets even though we live in Boston is more economical - especially with all the discounts. This year they went up a lot - but I decided it was still worth it. I guess we look at our Disney trips as resort vacations with a lot for our only child to do with her older parents.... My 6 year old even noticed the difference - she was really bummed out when we got there for a few days. Also my husband was bumming about the no gym facility also....

AJ - sound like your dad and I could hang at WDW. I like Carousel of Progress, Hall of Presidents, and American Adventure. They are great opportunities to cool down. I also like Laugh Floor, Philharmagic, Nemo the Musical, Festival of the Lion King, Frozen Sing-A-Long, and muppets for the same reason.

As someone who is “friends with” a few disney characters, it’s really sad to hear that you think people should skip meeting characters. We create a way more personal experience during a meet and greet than character dining since it’s way more rushed and timed... :( And our morning welcome show is incredibly important. Who wouldn’t want to see their favorite characters first thing in the morning?! Attractions are fun but the characters are what brings the magic to Disney.
@bobbernstein88245 жыл бұрын
Emily Burcroff I don't think her message was to skip meeting characters. I took it to be maximize the value of your time by combining a character meet opportunity with breakfast by doing a breakfast character meal, instead of waiting in long lines or using a Fastpass to do a character meet in the park.

As an Orlando local, our water isn't bad. Maybe I'm acclamated to the taste, but I've traveled around the country and quite a bit of the country has nasty water (the entire Southwest's taste like dirt). As long as you don't let it sit in a bottle for a day, it tastes pretty decent, especially if it's cold and you're thirsty.
@elainehill59315 жыл бұрын
I agree about skipping souvenirs. Since the prices have increased and continue to go up we just won’t be buying a bunch of overpriced merchandise. We didn’t buy that much before now it will be maybe one thing per family member and that’s it.

As someone who seriously just got back from Disney, these are great! However, we were there on one of the hottest days in history. The longer shows were great to break up the heat and get some air to cool down with!

CoP and Hall of Presidents would make a great place to relax during the hottest part of the afternoon when lines for other rides are at their peak.

I love Carousel Of Progress and the Hall Of Presidents. The fact that they are 30 minute air conditioned indoor attractions are a plus especially when the heat of the day is unbearable. So many attractions are relatively short and when you’ve waited 90 minutes in line and the attraction is 3 minutes long it is a bit of a let down.

While looking today 1/26/2020 on the hot topic website “Disney” they have lounge fly backpacks for $45!!! I think in florida they are like$60-80 a backpack. Now they don’t have Disney parks brand, but they did have other characters. It’s worth a checkout and will save you if you’re looking for that sort of thing. Also check amazon.

About the opening show in Magic Kingdom, there's no way to 'skip' when I was there in 2018. The rope drop rope was moved to block the Frontier land and Tomorrow land. That forced everyone to stay on Main Street, either shopping, eating or watching the show. I was there by the rope, waiting for the show to finish, so I could go to the rides.

also, something my fam does every year at Disney is NO DRINKS (I'm a child I don't mean alcohol I mean soda, Shirley Temple, juice etc) me, my parents and my two brothers usually always share 1-3 desserts at dinner at a restaurant and sweet drinks are very expensive (sweet drinks also don't help with energy when walking and sometimes running through the hot and sweaty parks) 6 sweet drinks (lunch and dinner) are about $54 each (and we all know water is free) and 3 desserts (dinner only) are about $36. I know this is different and is only helpful for some people but it did wonders for us!
