Parrots are a life long commitment! Like children they only know what we teach them. I bought the egg, hatched my B&G, hand fed him. Trained with lights & water bottle. My guy is not a screamer, he can sing, talk, whistle all he wants but I discourage nuisance screaming. My guy is now 27 years old, love him dearly. Had a Double Yellow Headed Amazon, Roy lived to 68 years old, he passed in 2019. Good luck with your babies.

I wanted a parrot specifically because I wanted a pet for life. They need alot of time daily, and the macaws have a teenage rebel phase. Assume you will get bit hard a few times eventually, but it shouldn't happen often ( a few times a year, usually when their hormones go up for breeding season ). It's not like a dog. When they reach adulthood, you have to figure "how can I make the macaw WANT to do X". If you try to make them do something they do not want to, you'll get bit and they will build-up resentment towards you.

I’ve been bit once in 5 1/2 years. It was when I was making him do something he wasn’t ready to do. Now he grabs my hand but he is very gentle. His snacks are a huge motivation. You learn your macaw or whatever bird you get. Thanks for watching!

people do not realize how much WORK it is to own a bird. I think a lot don't know how social, friendly and sensitive birds are. I have a tiny green cheek and even with him it's a lot of work! I spend so much time sweeping/cleaning and giving him attention lol. I wish it was against the law to impulsively purchase animals.

Very educational for people considering being owned by a parrot. My B&G Macaw has been with me for 17 years. My African Grey, cockatiels and parakeets are all adopted- yea, I went for the biggest one first! Thank you for taking such great care of this magnificent macaw. Yes, people please do your research. I’ve lived with a B&G macaw since 1991. She was my 3rd parrot in a family of Severe macaw and a cherry head conure. Your piece is definitely pertinent to bird ownership. It’s really challenging but I had my conure for 34 years. It does help to learn the hazards of parrot ownership. Maybe another bird might alleviate some boredom when your not available. He talks really well! I often tell people this. They’re a cross between Houdini and a chainsaw!

Macaws are some of the most attentive birds ever, they love for it. They love cuddling up next to you and your presence around them. They hate being alone or feeling left out and yes, the screaming is good awful my neighbors can hear it sometimes. They also throw all the food they can and dirty their water till it looks like they’ve shit in it when they get cranky. They are also very smart, my Red Front Headed Maxaw can mimic words and phrases, and unlock his cage latches when he wants to. They are very loving and affectionate though and are one of the most unique and intelligent birds you could ever get.

YES! I am constantly cleaning, sweeping, mopping, picking up feathers, cleaning up poo! You also sink a lot into the proper food, an adequate cage, and toys. They are sooo worth it, though! My B&G just turned 2 this month. She also enjoys music-she was absolutely enraptured by the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. She was grooving and dancing and screming! It's like having an eternal toddler. You really need a room just for them that you can bird proof as they will chew through electric cords, etc.

In her room, yes! She has developed an aversion to her harness for going outside and I don't want to stress her out. I spend at least $100 a month on food/toys/etc. THEY ARE VERY VERY VERY VERY LOUD. I might recommend you not let him on your shoulder as his head is higher than yours which means he feels dominant over you. They’re never alone in the wild so he’s not mature yet until he’s 20. As a nurse I learned to clip toenails. Mine will actually let me clip her toe nails one at a time while I’m holding her. Took about 3 years of conditioning her to allow that.

I wanted a parrot since I was a kid, but I made the decision to wait since birds are very demanding pets. I waited 20 years, until my kids were grown up and when I could start to work from home. So, now I have a caique, I have calculated that we will die around the same time. If she survives me, she knows my son very well and he will take her if I am gone. He has a yellow naped rescue so he is already infected by the parrot bug. If you don't have the time, do NOT get a parrot!

This guy say how much work parrots are and then doesn't even bother to free flight train and clips his bird's wings. Believe him. A lot of people underestimate how much trouble dogs are to leash train, and socialize, and exercise, too, and those dogs can end up in the pound. If you don't want to free fly train, there are lots of nice older birds in rescues. Parrots get really old. I knew a lady with parrots and that was back in the day before KZbin and free flight training and lots of info and she had one pet Macaw that she was close too that used to fly up into the Eucalyptus trees behind her house in an L.A. suburb, but that bird always came back down. Descending and getting out of tree branches is flying stuff birds need to learn and they are not innate skills. People gave her birds too, so she had an avairy in the backyard with less tame birds that she wouldn't trust to fly about. She died of complications from alzheimers. Her son liked birds, though, so they hopefully all got re-homed pretty well.

So what you are saying is that having Coco is like having a small child. 😂 Throwing food, feeding unwanted food to the dog, definitely the behavior of a toddler!! Disruptive when you are trying to talk on the phone, yep, that's for sure an issue and my goodness, acting like little demons when company visits? Yep, my kids behavior for sure!!!😂😂 One good thing about Coco over a toddler? Coco probably lets you go to the bathroom without him joining you!😂 But seriously, thanks so much for sharing Cocos history with us!!! He is a VERY beautiful bird and I LOVE watching him interact with you!!! I'm guessing you have surely been a pirate for Halloween at least once since bringing Coco to live with you!!!!😂 Oh and I LOVE the color of your French doors!!! I'm gonna wait till next year so i can have enough time to constant research and also Prepare too. Like get a bird cage, small animal like toys for the bird and it's food and perch stuff and be ready when that time comes. Nice and awesome helpful information on this too :D ( Also is a male easier to take care of or is a female easier instead of a male? ) - I should get a Budgie Parakeet first for awhile so i can kind of experience the bird life and maybe later on at somepoint on get the Macaw Parrot...

I wanted a small parrot like Caique. They are the clowns of the parrot world, but my spouse wanted a Macaw because we have cats. But I wanted one as well but I was kinda afraid of a big parrot. Question I’ll ask is do you mind cleaning every day and more than once on some days, because they are messy. We bought coco toys but he literally destroys them within minutes. So we make stick toys and he loves those and they are free. Go visit someone who has a bird and just watch and take notes. Now they’re so many wonderful things about him as well, he is a good ball, and says the craziest things, but you should definitely do your research. Thanks for watching!

This lovely bird is 180° opposite of the b&g macaw I have seen in Karpaty parrotry. He/she suddenly jumped on my back trying to bite my neck, I finally threw him/her off me with the help of the caretakers, but he/she injured my mother to the blood in the process. After it was all seemingly settled, we were going out, the parrot was sitting still, so we just got out and closed the door and I KID YOU NOT, that damn parrot jumped onto the door and started clawing and beating it's wings on it - I saw it was the same macaw, as the part of the door the bird flew into was a see-through XD Almost as the guy/gal was there saying "I have not ended up with U b!tch". That was creepy af XD None of the parrots reacted negatively on me. Only that certain one LOL And it was like 3rd time we went into that parrotry. I have no idea what had gotten into this one bird's head, but now we'd be a little afraid to return to the place 4th time XD

Never clip a macaw! If your not able to invest time and research into training then get a chicken - don’t punish the bird. Macaws live at tops of trees, hence need to be taught to fly downwards (descent training) along with recall and loop training to free-fly. Your bird screams because your re-enforcing / rewarding that behaviour with attention. When he screams ignore him; when he is calm return and give him a treat. He mat also scream as he is not able to fly and get the physical and mental stimulation he needs. Don’t disable the bird by clipping, enable it by training!

Thanks for watching. I actually didn’t get his wings clipped like I said in the video. I love a bird that can go on free flights, but with that being said we love him and it’s my job to protect him from harm. I’ve followed lady on Instagram , and her bird was free flyer and it flew into a truck driving by and died. That bird was trained very well. The video isn’t about that tho. It’s about real parts of owning that you don’t normally see, (the messy side) Because to many parrots end back up in a rescue because of things people didn’t expect. Makes me mad and sad for any animal to be placed in a rescue, but sometimes they find a better home.. I do agree with you tho. Nothing more beautiful than seeing a macaw fly! ps: I do have chickens. Absolutely, this video is about the time and effort that is needed to have a Macaw in your family but you wont invest the time to train him to free-fly, not a good example tbh.
