This is the Thirty Fourth in several episodes discussing the things i've learned from Barry Harris I started studying with Barry in 1993 and still learn from his teaching every day. I hope I can use this channel to help other musicians who are interested in Jazz but find it a little too cerebral. I think Barry's method, while being cerebral, is also direct and most important beautiful. Please Subscribe and feel free to comment below on how I can improve this channel I'm available for skype lessons if you prefer.

Good night. Firstly, I would like to thank you for your selflessness. Barry shared with you, and you are doing exactly what he would want you to do. Share. As a Jazz musician myself, I found you as a result of going back in my head to people who have had something to do with my playing, at one time or another. I was in one of Barry's jumbo classes back in the 80's, and it was a great experience for me. The best compliment I got at the time was, "that tune is swinging." That was Daahoud. So I decided, as a result of the current situation, to go back to my "lingo." That's where I found you, and the great work that you are doing. I no longer speak in that C. Parker's "lingo" as an instrumentalist, but once looking ahead, I realized that this situation is going to be much longer than anyone thought. Thus, I found your page. I remembered how much Barry moved me, so I gave you a shot. I wanted to get back to the "old me" talking like that. You blew me away with the teachings of Barry. Kudos to you and the work you are sharing. After the 1st video, I must say, It was hard to get by the solid body guitar with the rock sound. Drove me crazy. Then in another video, you said that you haven't heard any one sound the same. I'm thinking of players, so, once I get by the rock sound, I should be ok, right? Yes. You do sound bopish in most of the examples you share, and for me that's great. I have no clue as to what you sound like playing live. Yet the examples you give, are tremendous. I saw one of your videos where you played an acoustic guitar and I was like... someone commented this same thing to him. (Smile). I play bop in a place where everyone comes from rock, and it doesn't sound right. Bro, keep doing what you are doing, but leave something that I can study tomorrow. You are improvising most of the time, and that's cool. Leave where you at, and make it easier for those that are not quite there as yet, can follow. True love, Strait Ahead.

A lot of thoughtful material here AGAIN! I specially like your opinion @ 14:45 that the soloist should be outlining the changes and not giving us the modal itude that seems to cover the situation. Using the third of that secondary dominant as a target really has ideas going for me. Thanks again Chris!

Great beautiful and I tried to see if there was some way to descend the F but managed to do some scale pivot from F above the 7th to the 9th a min7 below before getting to the 7th ascending. Got to comprehend so much more of these. The triplets to even things out and they sound so awesome too.

Great, as always. I love the sound of coming down the V7 scale over the I chord. Quick question, not related to this video: on the biii Diminished chord, what scale of chords should you be thinking? Thanks

Thanks Bill. There isn't just one scale that Barry uses for b3 Diminished. If we were in the key of G and we were playing Bb diminished sometimes he would play the diminished scale ( A Bb C Db Eb E F# G). Sometimes he plays A7 down to the 3rd of F#. Sometimes he plays Eb7. I've heard him use all of these. All of them beautiful. I hope this helps.

This is really helping me. In this video… he/you seem(s) to start playing a C7 scale during the bar of F. Is that true? Is it okay to do that? How should I look at it to know how to start early with the C7 scale like that?

I look forward to what I hope is a future tri-tone video. A question I have: When you're playing the movement in Eb, does the G7 take the regular G7 scale (c major) and then go straight into Cmin? I remember a video of Barry stressing the fact that a seventh chord was found in one key, and I've never gotten to clear up how which scales are played adjacent to one another.
@thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616

In Eb, the changes going to the relative minor are EbMajor, Dminor7b5 , G7 Cminor. The Dminor7b5 to G7 takes a Bb7 scale up and down to the 3rd of G (B). I hope this helps.

@@thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616You're the man. You explained it well in your video but that video of Barry at the Hague telling his students how important it was that specific chords were only found in specific keys had been throwing me for a loop. Thanks (again) for everything.

@@thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616 Thinking in C harmonic minor is perhaps over-simplifying, but it works.That's how I normally view it given the example progression. Just need to be careful with the natural B over Ebmaj, but after that is fine. Elements of Ab MM scale (over G7) should work as well. Does this makes sense? Excellent stuff and thank you for the great channel!

Thank you so much for your wonderful videos. I am a huge fan of Barry's work and teaching philosophy. I have a question.. Since the diminished scale associated with C6 starts a whole step above the tonic and the same diminished scale begins a whole step above the tonic of Am7, what is the advantage in thinking of the scale in terms of C6? Thanks!
@thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616
@thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616 5 жыл бұрын
I suppose you could look at it from Aminor 7 if you'd like. Barry always refers to it from the Maj6th. I think as long as you're aware of where it applies, either way is ok. Glad you're enjoying the videos. Please share with your musician friends.
