Yup...we are weird here....and it never gets old for me! And this is someone who goes to a weekly burlesque/firedancing/vaudville show...on a Sunday, then the next night, I do live band karaoke, and the night after that, i'm part of a weekly comedy show. I have friends who are musicians, actors on nationally known shows, strippers, activists, cannabis connoisseurs, professional beardsmen, businesses owners, brewmasters, and many other cats that are just makin it their own way. The first thing I noticed when I moved to Portland was seeing women walking around alone at night in the neighborhoods. That was seven years ago. That may have changed, but I got the sense of it being much safer than any other city on the West coast. Talking to people who have lived there a long time, there is a mix of strong localism and progressive idealism. For example, SE and NE 39th Avenue was renamed Cesar Chavez Boulevard, but the locals, most of whom are very Progressive, still like to call it 39th Ave. There is also a very strong do-it-yourself ethos where people re-cycle a lot of old things and make them new. Another thing I learned is that the city has a very well defined addressing system. All of the addresses are numbered odd and even according to a simple formula. The way to remember it is, 'all the odd people live in the Northwest.' This means addresses that are odd-numbered are going to be either on the north side or the west side of the street depending on which way the street runs. The even-numbered addresses are always on the south or east sides. Culturally the area has gone through some rapid changes in the last 30 years and I suspect many people have not fully caught up to them. As late as the 1980s there were still some Jim Crow-style laws that were still on the state books. Oregon was slow to adapt to people of different races and cultures, but Portland has become a magnet for several cultures within a short time. The liberal majority has tried to embrace it, but in some cases I witnessed they weren't sure how to relate to these people.

To me it is not only Portland. I'd say the entire Pacific northwest has lots of smaller cities (compared to others worldwide like LA, NY, London, Paris etc) and they all have small but very authentic produce overall. Great food, culture lifestyle. People are more relaxed, there is less pressure and less judgement. People learn to live with different types of cultures and learn the good stuff from each other, focusing on the good, ignoring the bad. People seem happy and good stuff comes out of this places. I love the Pacific Northwest!

Overall, Portlanders are TOO liberal. It's almost a caricature of indoctrination. Also, "weird" is widely subjective. As I've gotten older, I find it weird when people set out to be "weird" because somehow just being their own unique self (without the silly hipster shwag) isn't special enough. I think it's important to have strong instincts as to what is authentic and what is trendy/hipster silliness...which Portland has in spades.

Seems as if Portland is considered weird because of the freedom and liberties that are common compared to the rest of the U.S. I've never been, just an outsiders take. The people of Portland expect liberty and therefore demand it. The rest of the country should take a lesson.

I've been around the world twice, visited 14 countries and most of the 50 states. Lived in California, the southeast and southwest U.S. for 12 years combined... Born and raised in Oregon, worked in Portland for 7 years... Yes, Portland is weird and inhospitable for the most part. Too many entitled people. Too many drug users and abusers. Too many people unashamed to live off the efforts of others.
