In this video I share my thoughts on the Leica Q2 and my review after using it on two weddings and two engagement shoots. I think the camera has some unique strengths but overall is not worth $5,000 for what is currently available from other brands. Im sure you will all have questions about how it performs in other areas so feel free to drop a comment and ill answer as best as I can. Thanks for watching - Will

I take your point regarding the price and functionality of the Leica Q2 for wedding photographers. However, having owned the Q2 for over a year now, it has become my favorite camera. I would strongly recommend anyone buying any camera to perform due diligence to meet your needs (research before buying). There are plenty reviews that would steer you away from the Q2 as a wedding shooter. The Q2 is well suited for travel, street, some landscape, and macro. It is a fixed lens camera that travels well and is convenient when you want to leave your multiple cameras and lenses at home and take one excellent camera that will deliver drop-dead, gorgeous shots. For me, no regrets.

Me too! No regrets. It performs so well for my landscape and macro photography. I’m all for the all-in-one full frame high res cameras. Sony disappointed me by not releasing the X1R M3 this year so I decided to go with the Q2. And now even if Sony releases theirs keeping the 35 mm focal length, I won’t regret buying the Q2 as I prefer the 28 mm for landscape. Perfect purchase for me just in time for the fall season colors!

I'm thinking of going into the pizza delivery business, Do you think I should use a Lamborghini or a perhaps a Ferrari? I'll be picking up my long awaited Q2 in a couple of weeks, and it cannot come soon enough! To me, a Leica is like a pallet, paint and fine brushes, to make art with. If this Gent wanted a fast camera, then a Sony would have been the better choice. Happy Shooting to all Q2 users!!

I’ve only had my Leica Q2 two weeks and just the fact that on working a piece of art, I am my own MASTER of “selective focus” and the Leica will never override my decisions regarding any manual settings, would be reason enough to never discuss the price of this fine instrument. That, and the fact that now, I am out of bed two hours earlier than accustomed, walk many more miles than I thought capable, and when my fellow photogs. are packing up to go home, the Q2 and I are just getting started...and did I mention, I’m almost 90. Most of the comments I read about the price tag of the q2 are from people who buying them for vanity’s sake. The Q2 is not for sports, weddings, or videos, or the bells and whistles of a fully automatic digital camera, rather, it is a magical instrument that will meet you halfway in creativity. Both intuitively and spiritually. Happy shooting Leica Q2 brothers and sisters!

Why you don’t put an accurate title: to not buy Q2 for weddings? Come on now. It’s an amazing lens/camera, which of course you also clarify in the video, and it’s for specific uses and not for every situation. But your title is generalized and thus not accurate. I bought this camera knowing 100% that I would never use it for paid assignments (no tether, no usbc, no proper flash system, no real autofocus, noise at high iso, etc).

Maybe I could be wrong but it takes time to learn how to use a Q2. It's a learning curve. But If you know how to set it up you don't have to dive in menu's ! You only need 3 buttons to reach every function you need. Even with the new firmware things are even better. So I think, you didn't take the time to use the Q2 as Leica developed it. You want to use it as a nikon. I can do things faster on my Q2 than on a Nikon Z6 … Sorry, but thats just the way it is. So before going out with a new brand, learn how to use all it's options.
@FrankWestPR
@FrankWestPR 3 жыл бұрын
As mentionned earlier you got the wrong expectation on the Q2. It is not a camera for action photography and you looked at it as if it was a Canon/Nikon/Sony camera. Think of the size of the Q to implement a Full Frame sensor and all the tech that goes with it. The Q2 really shine for Street/Travel photography. You take a few days to implement your likings into the different menu shortcut such as the FN button, choose one autofocus option or eventually work on profiles and that's it. Personally I use zone focusing, manual focus with focus peaking with that zoom shortcut on the dial button and the Touch AF & release and that's it. As for the price, it cost the price of an M lense, where you would usualy add 7000$ for the body, so Leica to speak it is a bargain. If auto focus is important to you switch to Sony, no other company comes close to their system.

Well, we certainly need to hear a second voice. But I think the most of the Q2’s disadvantages you talked about come from Leica’s philosophy. I don’t really consider the Q2 being desiged for wedding or any similar work projects. It sounded wierd to me listening you complaining about crop modes, that functionality is simply not designed to replace lenses/view angles and I think you as a pro should already know it perfectly. Let’s admit it, the Q2 is for fun. I don’t own one, but borrowed it for a few times during the last year and half. It renders colours in a such pleasant way that surprises me everytime I use it. It seems that the Fuji X100 series may be a very good rival for the Q2 as a number YT reviewers compare these two cameras. But almost every signle reviewer recommends buying a Q2 instead of a X100 at the end, while don’t really offer an objective argument since the X100 offers a ton of functions more and is certainly much cheaper (not exactly a cheap camera, but much cheaper than a Leica). I guess Leica is the reason :D So, I would recommend buying one only if you know what you are looking for in a camera (and well funded, of course). For me, it is fun, and I will probably buy a similar camera sometimes, but an interchangeable system suits me just fine now.

The Leica Q2 isn't by any stretch of the imagination, a camera for doing weddings or "action" photography. It is like many Leica's, a camera for a slower, more deliberate pace of shooting. It works best for a fine art style of shooting. Or, doing a zone focus. So not surprised it would be frustrate you.

So this review is like hearing someone that drives a Jeep and complain about why the Porsche 911 doesn’t work for him. They’re both designed for different photographers (coming from a Sony and Leica guy here). A high-end DSLR will have more utility and options, but Leica cameras are a bit more focused. Restricting, yeah, but it wasn’t designed to do everything - you have Canon, Sony and Nikon for that.

Own the z6, z7, and QP. The QP is my fav. I get more genuine, candid shots with it. There is sacrifice because you do slow down but the QP for me makes my art and captures my candid life shots. My family has no clue I’m shooting. The nikon’s are for work. I’d never shoot a Q for a wedding, probably not even the SL2. The Q’s are a different tool in the chest capturing totally different images than the z’s. Lack of a flip out screen isn’t a matter. I’ll use zone manual focus and knowing the angle of view, I’ve gotten great at shooting from the hip with my thumb and working the focus ring with my index finger. A lot of times I’m not looking at the screen or viewfinder. I’m in the conversation capturing the moment at the same time, but again, if it’s a wedding I’m not shooting that way. I’m making 100% I’m composed and nailing focus. Different scenarios. Your right the files are large but to Leica’s credit I can push my QP files more than my z7 files. The QP hits the 24mp sweet spot with amazing files. You also forgot to mention macro mode which is an incredible option to have. Also, PRO TIP: purchase your Leica used from one of the stores. You can often get warranties and save a bundle. My QP was used and in amazing shape. Leica Store Miami does a great job listing their used equipment.

You're actually wrong about the crop vs. lenses with equivalent focal distance. For example, if you shoot the same subject from the same distance with a 50mm lens and with the q2 cropped to a 50mm equivalent, the compression and overall appearance will be very similar in both cases. It's the distance to your subject that matters more. Also the bokeh translates when cropping. For example, a 25mm f/2 lens cropped to a 50mm equivalent will result in a very similar bokeh as a 50mm f/4 lens when shot at the same distance to the subject. Many people get this wrong but this knowledge has been around for decades. So has been Leica.

Thanks for this video, I found your perspective really interesting and can completely understand why the Leica Q2 isn't for you. Unlike many of the previous commenters who have the Q2, I actually took the opportunity to buy a Q when the Q2 came out because many people traded in their Qs. It was a good opportunity to get a Q at a good price (I bought it at a Leica Store and it had been serviced by Leica). I really fell in love with my Q and the images it creates. I was, however, wondering if I should have bought the Q2, even though I felt that the price was a bit too high for me. After watching your video, especially the comment about the file size from the Q2, I think I made a good choice with the used Q. I'm not doing any kind of professional photography such as wedding photos, it's just been a very long time hobby for me and I am really happy with the Q (my other Leica is an M6 - I'm slow on the uptake with digital... I like the darkroom). I guess what I'm saying with this comment is that I completely understand your criticisms in light of what you need from a camera and I also appreciate the criticisms because now I don't need to rethink if I should have bought the Q2. The Q is perfect for me. Thanks!

Welcome back. You have a very fair critique on the Leica Q2. You mentioned both the camera's strengths and weaknesses very clearly. Leica cameras are great for hobbyists who have a lot of money. They never have been great for working professionals. The Leica SL2 would be more suitable for paid professional work. Also, Leica is very old school and they tend to not embrace newer technology. It's AF system is still inferior to that of Sony or Canon. In fact, the Nikon Z series AF system is superior to Leica's despite its weaknesses. Still, Leica has beautiful cameras. One thing I enjoy about Leica is that they really force people to slow down their photography and appreciate the process.

Leica as never been great for working professional???? in the wedding field probably for reporter, documentary or street photographer it’s quiet the opposite there isn’t one of the big names on this field not using a leica !! And the autofocus in those fields is a non subject as when you want to be really fast at focusing you practice zone focusing indessly and at some point any guy that master done focusing will have clean shot ten time faster than any other guy relying on autofocus even the sony or canon one …

Hm, i am a semi-pro photographer, and i do street, art and erotic-art photography. I don't agree at all with the headline "Here's why you should not". This statement is totally wrong, and i would really ask people who are interested in the Q2, not to rely on this one statement only. I am shooting almost everything in manual focus mode, as well no program automatics. And i can do fantastic shoots with this camera. You points out the wedding photography, and you might be right on a lot of comments. But this camera is so much more than just a "overpriced toy for the rich". If speed and money is an issue for someone, leave your fingers from it, for everyone else, it is an amazing piece of art and gear.

Having used the Leica Q2 myself I understand your frustrations.... pros - gorgeous image quality and colours. - leaf shutter camera, still better than electronic shutter and no need for HSS as you can go up to 1/2000s with a regular flash without loosing power. Alternatives some medium format, Fujifilm X100(X), Ricoh GR(X)... - some sort of weather sealing. - minimalistic menu system and 3 buttons you can tweak and fairly quickly reassign with a long press of the button. Leica tries to have a streamlined menu system across their camera systems (SL2, CL, M) - Excellent electronic viewfinder. - AF performance, for me it is very fast. I still use AF in old school mode as I did with my Nikon F4 (AF-S with centre focus point and use focus and recompose technique). Unless bride and groom are chasing each other I do not see why you need those other gimmicks. - A "real" manual focus lens which can be used for zone focussing as you have a depth of field scale. - a close distance mode "macro" not a real macro but good enough in field use. - the described cropped mode is non destructive on raw files and shows your cropping when using LR/ACR. JPG files are cropped destructively. cons - huge files sizes due to the large mp sensor. Do we need that extra resolution? - higher iso files not so good, certainly if you intend to crop your images. - EVF eyecup scratches easily same as on Q1 and is not user serviceable. Apparently the whole EVF assembly has to be replaced. - 28mm focal length. Perhaps a nice focal length for all those "mobile phones photographers" but in my opinion to wide, I mostly used the camera in 35mm or 50mm crop mode. I started my photography in the 70ies a 50mm and 35mm were the norm. As you stated a crop mode is not the same as a real 35 or 50mm - AF not as tweakable as other AF cameras. Although the camera is not intended for sports photography. - expensive although "same price as the Summicron M 28mm "you get a "free" camera body with it. - expensive extra battery. The main reason I sold the camera after 1 year is mostly because of the 28mm fov. I tried and tried hard but 28mm is not my cup of tea.... Is it a bad camera, not at all, but not for my type of photography. I still love the M system and unless my eyesight goes terribly wrong I stick to these cameras (at least in the Leica system). These are of course my opinions

Dude, I love your review - very relevant. I have been toying for such a long time to buy a Q2 as a 3rd camera to play around. I shoot with Sony A7RIII and A7III -- Going to upgrade to A7IV after virus -- I love large files because I adventure travel tons around the world in super remote places -- not like weddings where you can set things up -- I always need to crop. So now I was looking at the Q2 monochrome to mess around with on my travels since I love BW shots. I do have FU money -- but its still an issue with investing time into something that is not worthwhile. Last, is there anyone who has posted the difference between Q2 monochrome shots and a Sony A7RIII or IV -- both in B&W messed around in Lightroom? I really rally would love to see that. Is there a difference?

Good video man! It was recommended by YT after watching some reviews on the camera. I bought mine less than a month ago and love it. I shoot landscape and nature so the slowness isn’t a factor but understand where you’re coming from relative to your type of photography. Honestly I’ve been disappointed by Sony for not releasing the X1R M3 the competitor to Q2. I’m all for the fixed lens full frame and after waiting for Sony forever, I couldn’t anymore and went with the Q2. Expensive option for sure. But so far enjoying the all in one 47 MP full frame for my landscape. In fact if Sony releases the X1R M3 keeping the 35 mm focal length, I’m not going to regret my decision buying the Q2 as I love the 28 mm for landscape. Cheers from WA!

Your haven’t really reflected or thought through what you actually wanted the Leica for. It’s just not suited to your job; very little to do with the quality of the Q2 per se.

I’ve owned the Z6 which I sold and went to a SonyA7iv. I also have the Leica Q2 which I brought for my wife. It completely depends on what you want. A Leica Q2 or any Leica really isn’t going to fit a wedding photographer (or any speedy work) it’s just not what they are made for. But we both love the Q2, it’s become our travel camera and also my wife uses it for behind the scenes shots of shoots. In the video you compare computer use so like using an old model computer. I’d compare it more to the keyboard. You still get a lot of writers who buy old style keyboards and love using them because it makes them feel part of the words more. The Q2 is that, it makes you feel more a part of it. The lack of tilting scene makes you get down on the floor which not everyone likes to do, but I like that it makes me do more, makes me consider more. No I’d never use it for a professional shoot but I still use it all the time. The pictures you get don’t compare to any others. The richness and beauty of the colors it captures are amazing. It’s definitely only a camera for certain people and for me anyone that is wanting something for professional speedy work, this don’t fit. But for an enjoyable out and about camera I love it. The price for accessories is crazy though, add another grand just to get them.

I have the Q2 and the Z6ii and love both. I mainly use the Q2 for travel and walk around and am thrilled by the results. I use it with single point AF-S. But for any kind of events or situation that requires continuous AF or longer reach, the Z6ii is better suited.😊

I have the Leica Q2 and use Sony mirrorless cameras. For me, the Q2 is what I use for street, environmental portraits (which are AMAZING with this thing), travel, and even some landscapes. I use my Sony gear for fast action needs like events, weddings, wildlife. I don't think the Leica Q2 is what I would ever grab for a wedding unless it was for a more relaxed couples shot... but totally agree about how slow it is and the damn buffer is a tortoise. That being said, the images I've made with the Leica have been my all time favorites for the reasons you mentioned: image quality, colors, etc., but one thing you missed was how this thing makes black and white images SING. In terms of focusing, most Q2 users shy away from the tracking focus mode and prefer single point (I do as well) as that is where this shines. Think you made the right call in the end as it really isn't a wedding camera. Excellent video!

Its a few years later -- I use a sony A7RIII -- which is an older A7R but its autofocus is industry leading -- so I get your point. I plan on getting an A1 or A7RIV. That said, the use-case for a Leica Q is not yours -- its street photography or adventure travel photography or portrait -- its a slower mode machine. BTW: A killer Sony A7R system is 85mb+ files -- no big deal in my experience and I've had that for almost 3 years now. If you are doing weddings, you need two cards; RAW and JPG or however you design your backup -- Q does not have that. With all that said -- I have a Q2 Mono and I love the feeling of minimalism -- if I am shooting in a faster situation or need reach or width (not fake crop) I would take my Sony. So its a fair review -- but your the wrong use-case.

I alway enjoy your videos and this year, March, for my retirement I wanted a good camera. After a lot of research my short list was the either the Leica Q2 or the Nikon Z6. However, they offer quite different propositions while being great cameras for the money. The Q2 is smaller and lighter and a great ¨travel¨camera to take with you everywhere. It has great optics but a fixed 28mm lenses. The 50M sensor gives you the option to crop covering effectively 28 to 56mm with at least the same resolution of the Z6. These are the lenses you say you use. However, I understand for what you do why you prefer the Z6 and clearly it is a better camera for you. In the end, I went for the Z6! For the same money I can get the Z6, the great 50mm f1.8, the 24 to 70mm F4, FTZ for my F mount 70 to 300mm zoom and a peak design tripod with change! That way I can try lots of different types of photography. However, it has taken me a lot of time to learn how to use the Z6 while the Leica would be easier. Ideally, I would have both!

Isn't the Q2 a street camera not a wedding camera. I think the point of the Q2 is not for professional wedding/commercial work. I'm not trying to be sarcastic. I'm just confused why this guy thought this camera in any way would work for a wedding. Basically the Q2 is an expensive carry anywhere street camera. I think you're comparing apples and oranges. You bought the wrong Leica for what you do. You should have purchased the Leica SL2 for wedding photography. The Leica Q system is really made for street and travel photography. Although I know of a number of professional photographers using the Q and the Q2 for paid gigs and it works well for them. Most of it is portraiture, not action. I think if you were to try the SL2 you'd really like that camera for your work. As for the price point, the cost of Leica cameras is the forever argument in the photography community. The one big difference between their cameras, especially their film cameras is that they hold value more than any other camera manufacturer on the market. Considering that the M6 which was made in 1984 can easily fetch $2K+ on eBay today. I'm considering picking up a used Q, not the Q2, for street and travel photography at some point but before I do that I will buy the Fujifilm GFX 50S so I can make some money to afford the Leica Q. LOL

Unfortunately the SL2 doesn’t have top notch autofocus either. I’ve tried it, it’s way slower than my a7rIII. Like it’s not even comparable. No matter how you look at it, Leica is just way behind the competition in terms of software. And our cameras are also software now, that’s just how it is. Don’t go on me like the classic Leica fan boy, I desperately want to get a Leica, optics are phenomenal, but I can’t sacrifice on all the progress we’ve made on Eye AF and all the stuff in the recent years.

In the mean time I purchased a used a7ii and will have it converted to a monochrome camera. I have seen images from the converted cameras plus I can use the primes I presently own. I suspect Leica will push out a SL2M in the future and I will be very interested in it. Great video man… No Leica body experience other than in store use. Agreed that, with Leica, above the 25mp size, their processors lag. I can understand the Q2’s selling of a higher mp sensor for cropping, but Leica has to step up their processor game. Canon had to do the same with its mirrorless cameras too. The Leica sl2s is an example of a modern 25mp camera. A shout out to the fuji xt3…. It quadrupled the processing power but kept the mp the same, creating a very smooth operation that I enjoy to this day… no slowdowns!

From what I’m hearing you probably picked the Leica that is least useful for your requirements. You would have been much better of with the SL2 ;-) For my professional work I’m alternating between my H6D and the Z7II, but for personal work I use the M10 and the Q2 Monochrome. It helps me to slow down and carefully approach the scene. In fact I use manual focus even on the Q2M, which is perfect (most AF cameras suck at MF). I can understand your frustration with the Q2 because what you describe is exactly how the camera was designed. I shoot fashion and make-up portraits for a living and the Q2 would be the last camera that I would consider to take to work. Uhmm, next to perhaps the M although Benj Haisch makes it work in his wedding photography. I guess its all a matter of workflow ;-)

A point about the crop facility .It is meant to emulate the framelines in an RF . Leica shooters like to see what is coming into the frame .so it more than just a way of implementing a crop. I use Leica M bodies but I don`t find any value in that way of seeing and like you ,if I want to crop, I`ll crop after in post but that isn`t the only reason leica have chosen to include this functionality in the way which they have . I don`t have a Q but wouldn`t have thought the camera would not be suitable for weddings . Most people I know who uses Leica uses film cameras and they love it. Not even single digital user.

This video was like comfort food for me. Yes, I’ve seen all the hype and yes I’ve thought Oooo what must it be like to shoot a Q2 ??? Which of course I couldn’t possibly afford or justify. I love your no Bullshit way of talking and explaining. Now I’m gonna go and stroke my Z6 and tell her I love her.

Would someone please comment on the AF performance with the latest firmware update as of this posting? Is AF faster than Mono Memoirs reports? I've read the firmware improvements that says it can AF+touch capture: is this nearly instantaneous? My canon GX7 miii does this instantly. Want the same in a $5000 camera. Thanks.
