Great video. I'll add a footnote to what you said in regards to gaming on Linux. If you're a retro gamer and you play older games that were made for something like Windows XP or 7, then Linux is your best friend. Wine is much better at handling those than the current versions of Windows. And if you play console games through emulators, Linux is your best friend because there's less overhead. And because most consoles use Linux or BSD as their OS, there's less to emulate.

Stopped watching after "GIMP is a replacement for Photoshop". As someone who's professionally used Photoshop for years, and have been on Linux for 4 years now, those aren't comparable programs at all. GIMP doesn't manage to scratch the surface of what Photoshop is capable of. Heck, non-destructive editing is a nightmare

@@MaxiMonkU2B It's not at all pedantic. It's not a minor detail that Photoshop is not replaceable with GIMP. Krita is a much better comparison of good software that's not as featureful. For anyone who's used to good tooling, working in GIMP is just awful. It doesn't even support CMYK in 2022. That's not to say there aren't other great creation software for Linux; Blender, DaVinci Resolve are great examples. It's just in the photo editor/vector design space there aren't really good alternatives to Photoshop & Illustrator. I would rather direct people to web apps like Photopea as a semi-alternative to Photoshop, and Figma for vector design.

As a person who born with Windows, forced to use MacOS in education and currently runs Arch + i3-gaps, btw; if you play games a lot: Run Wİndows if you professionally create content / develop apps: Run MacOS other than that: Run Linux By the way i'm playing games & developing apps on Linux with no problem, it's just a bit different -and subjectively harder- workflow than the above.

They both have their uses. Linux is great for FOSS, while Windows is great for wide support for programs like games. I use a Linux server with remote desktop for a bunch of automated work, while my daily desktop is in Windows. Best of both worlds.

In order to get into Linux I had to slowly transition. I have multiple PCs, so I was able to switch a computer to Linux as a project machine, where learning the OS was the main purpose, while still working in Windows normally. I can absolutely see how switching over immediately could turn people off, as I got very frustrated in the beginning due to feeling it was needlessly difficult to do basic things. I broke my install many times and had to start all over. Nowadays, flying through Linux feels more efficient and satisfying than Windows ever was. You mentioned how AAA gaming in Linux isn't the best, but honestly tools like ProtonGE are making the experience comparable to Windows. There really isn't anything I miss about Windows at this point.

Considering dual booting, for one who is a gamer, and still wants to use linux, preferably on most powerfull machine one has, dual booting is must. For example for me, though nowadays I keep them on different disks, and select from bios boot what OS I want to boot.

With steams inclusion in the linux gaming world I give it 10 years tops before linux is native triple AAA, don’t forget steamdeck can come in the steamOS variant which is linux. Yes you probably can make a portable windows install. But too me, mainly the elderly who refuse to adapt ain’t fit for linux. Everyone else has nothing but some hours to waste and experience something new and possibly life changing :-)

If you are expert in programming. can build whatever apps or solution then linux is okay but again keep it in mind, not everyone has that abilities

I had a spare 500gb ssd (samsing evo 850) on an OLD laptop i was originally going to use for some portable music recording, but that never really happened since I'm always at my PC lol. I decided to install that ssd on my PC and install linux mint alongside my windows (mainly for my wife and some specific applications like pro tools to record music. But besides that, I've been enjoying the experience to be honest. I was able to install steam and battlenet using Lutris - successfully playing rocket league and diablo 4. Didn't really have too much success with CS2 tho, it was super super laggy, not sure if it's the game, or Lutris container. I'm going to keep using LM to see if I would be able to make it my daily. Linux isn't really scary to me since I used it all through college, but at that time, I was mostly using CentOS 7 and mostly doing scripting and networking, so a bit of a different experience than daily life stuff.

I play on linux and most games work perfectly fine, only some online shooters have problems because of generic anti-cheat codes and this could/will be easely fixed if more people play on linux. Also i think some linux distros are much more easy to install and more intuitive to work with as Windows, so i recommend everyone to switch, there are so many different distros, everyone should find something he should like.

I didn't hear any real reason to not dual boot Linux and Windows. I've done that and am very happy with it. I almost always use Linux but there are a few programs that I need rarely that are only on Windows and I'm so happy that I have Windows to run them. It's not like it adds any complexity. You only have to select Linux or Windows in the grub menu at boot. That's it. There are no other problems. As far as using the terminal, I can't remember the complex command lines required so I always have to take time to search for them. I much prefer using the GUI whenever possible. So far, I'm very happy with the Mint interface. I rarely have to go to the terminal.

I started with Arch btw. Learning it was like hell. After all, I still don't think that Linux is ready to even dailydrive, let alone for gaming or productivity. It's so much buggy, it crashes all the time, Xorg crashes, gnome-kde crashes, Wayland isn't ready. I feel like im using an early production when I use Linux. I must say I haven't felt this even when I was in Windows Insider program and using the not recommended beta versions of Windows... Worst bloated beta version of Windows is better than best optimized Linux distros.

I've pondered this for months. The distro in not important because there are several for anyone's level of knowledge and/or determination to learn. Most important is the installation routine. If they can't install it, there's no point in the exercise. Next in the actual DE they log into because they installed to wild hooting and happy dancing. Next are the repos and ease of installation of software, cuz they'd like to be productive. Last stage - they're going under the hood if they can and want to. There's an order to things.

Eh... Arch has been more stable for than Ubuntu and Debian believe it or not mainly due to me somehow fucking up apt trying to install basic software I could fix the issues now just removing the broken repo but I think as a newbie Manjaro was easier I just use the AUR and it just works 90% of the time instead of weird out of date repos

I don't agree with "Linux is not for everyone". The most of the people just use their computer for email, office and web browsing. In common use, Linux and Windows do exactly the same thing. So I don't understand why people have to limit themselves to Windows. My parents have no computer skills, they used Windows 7 before, they didn't like the forced change to 10, so I showed them my Linux, they found it cool and convenient. So now they both use Manjaro, one on Mate, the other on KDE, after a few days of adaptation and some explanations, after 5 years of usage they still love it. So, I really think that Linux it's for everyone, but all distro or DE are not for everyone, but there is enough of them for everyone
