As a black man, I think that Dandadan's OP is an example of inspiration from hip-hop, (and other black) and I think Creepy Nuts' quote from that article is good proof of that. However, I also understand the frustration that some people have, and can sometimes misplace, with the appropriation of our culture. Similar to regular ole' racism, many people in the US believe that cultural appropriation doesn't exist or isn't a problem. They still believe this even though the King of Rock & Roll himself, Elvis, got his bag off the backs of black artists. More recently someone like Post Malone, if you've read that article of him disparaging rap. All that being true, labeling anything appropriation is still damaging to the discourse. It seems like Twitter's only function is damaging discourse these days lol. This situation is particularly sad because Black and Asian cultures mix together so well. See the Boondocks, Black Dynamite, Afro Samurai, Samurai Champloo, and Creepy Nuts' whole run they been on for a minute with the Call of the Night ending, Mashle opening, and now Dandadan. Idk if you wanna mess with Klankaklan though they seem pretty aggressive. Good Luck! ✊🏿

Extremely well written comment! Yes I’ve heard of the post Malone controversy & just recently watched a documentary about Elvis exploiting off of black people for his Rock & Roll career. You hit the nail on the head when it comes to how many in the US either think it’s an issue that doesn’t exist or incorrectly using the term in the wrong situations. It’s sad how unproductive the conversation has become because it feels like there’s an overall lack of comprehension of what it entails. Finally, I wholeheartedly agree how saddening it is that this kind of discourse exists between black and Asian cultures both as a person who is a “product” of the blending of the two cultures and as someone who is very passionate about the media that stems from the cultures individually. I also definitely need the luck LOL. It’s scary out here but I hope I can contribute a different view that maybe others haven’t thought of before. Thanks for the comment 🫶🏽

My favorite KZbin personality. U never cease to amaze with unique and interesting perspectives. I won’t delve into the race stuff but the show minus some awesome animation definitely isn’t all its but proped up to be as far as a character driven story. It’s very unfortunate because I read the manga expecting a lot more. The old “zero to hero” troupe kinda played out to me, instead of letting the main guy be a character and have his own personality it’s like u can look at him n tell what he is. The female lead however is a lot cooler has a unique style and depth to her character.

Oh my gosh this is so kind, thank you! I’m just one voice of many but I’ve definitely felt the calling to speak up about these media that I love and I’m so happy if that resonates or challenges the thinking of even one person! I feel similarly about the series myself. It’s definitely not my favorite but there’s also a reason why it’s so hyped at the same time! I’m also hoping to see some new / refreshing tropes in the future 🤞🏽

First of all, sorry if my english is a bit broken, its not my first language (I'm from Spain). Regarding the first topic, I dont think there is any kind of appropiation in referencing an existing medium as long as it is transformative. All art is always inspired by something that already exist, so as I understand it, ¿why is that different only because the inspiration belongs to another culture?. As I see it creativity should never be bound by those matters. And about the second one, I think the problem in image lies not on the fact that they turned the characters black but more on the political conotations that people gives to that kind of practices and the double standard that exist regarding then (I think we have all seen the case where someone is acussed of whitewashing a character in a fanart). At least thats my opinion as an outsider to american politics. I belive that if it werent for those 2 facts, people wouldnt care wherever the race you want to paint the character as.
