If you're a student like me and thinking about buying a kindle or a tablet, here's my advice: if you're more into reading pdf's, especially academic texts, get the tablet, kindle is good for novels but only for that, they're not good for pdf reading, especially for your reviewers or books. I made the mistake of purchasing a kindle; I enjoy reading, but due to my difficult subjects, particularly pharmacology, I can't read novels; I need to read academic books and pdf formatted modules of ours, and the kindle can't help me with that; hopefully, you won't make the same mistake in selecting a gadget.

I much prefer reading on a tablet over an e-ink device. I have a Kindle Paperwhite and an Amazon Fire 7, and I exclusively use the Fire 7. Goes with me everywhere, and I average about 2 to 3 hours per day of reading on it during the workweek, up to about 6 or 7 hours on Sundays. For me, it is flawless. Perfect size, durable (especially with the case and sleeve I have for mine), easy for me to keep in my work bag to read on during lunch break, and the screen is nice. Great color and contrast. I have 125 books in my Kindle App library, and a further 130 books in PDF format that I read using the Moon+ Reader app. The experience the Fire 7 provides is absolutely perfect for me.

When I saw they upgraded to a USB C connector I knew it was time. I think the old USB Micro connectors are a PIA. Her new one is great. It synced right out of the box and connected to WiFi immediately. The thing is perfect! Sooo mine will arrive tomorrow. (Been reading off an old Fire) What bugs me are the reviewers that give this product one star because it didn't work out of the box or they were too dumb to figure it out. If it doesn't work send it back and get another one. It couldn't be easier with Amazon. Giving it one star because it didn't work says nothing about a good one that does work. I bet a bad one is one in a thousand or more. Give it a break...just get another one.

DO NOT BUY A TABLET JUST FOR READING. The best option for any serious reader (ie someone who reads for long periods and/or daily) is a dedicated e-ink screen, anything else like a table or phone is eye strain and headache inducing unless used for short periods only. And personally, as I use my ereader as a reading device only, I don't need any bells and whistles or a huge screen - a 6-inch device is the perfect size unless you want to read comics or graphic-heavy technical non-fiction. But then I read the paper copies because pictures are better in person. And as there are so many excellent e-ink Android devices around now, there is no need to tie yourself to a single proprietary system that locks you in to buying their products only. Thank goodness for that. With access to google play, you can download the kindle, kobo and nook apps. You can also download any of the library apps, or subscription apps like Scribd. And Pocket for reading online articles. And third party epub and PDF readers. All of that, and even more features, on top of whatever native reader is built into the device. How can a kindle, or even a kobo, which I have had for years, compare to that? My next device, sometime soon, will be an Onyx Boox Poke 2 and with it comes almost total reading freedom.

Another person replying to this comment says he is in the US and most ebook formats are supported by the Kindle, but I find quite a few books that are not in the Kindle format but are in a format not supported by the Paperwhite, and PDF ebooks are not trivially supported, either. Because of the difficulty of taking ebooks out of my library system, I haven't used my second generation Kindle Paperwhite nearly as much as I thought I would. If you're going to compare a tablet to a Kindle as e-readers, then stick to the book reading features of both devices. The tablet can do this and that and then this and then that is irrelevant to the book reading experience comparison. Clearly for reading non-graphic books, a Kindle wipes the floor with any tablet out there. That said, if you're a minimalist and must have a tablet and don't want an additional device for reading, then the iPad mini is the most ideal as it is currently the lightest and smallest tablet with the right screen dimension for book reading. And I would use the invert dark mode so you can read a long time and be discipline and turn on airplane mode.

Only reaosn I don't wanna get Kindle is coz its Black and White the rest are all positive points, only if we had color e-ink technology. PS: I love my comic books that's the main reason am concerned for colors

my kindle is frustrating because it can't read PDFs very well once they are transcribed from images. But if I leave them as image based, then the pages are too small and crowded. I feel like with a tablet this wouldn't be such a worry

The biggest problem with the kindle is they are in black and white which is completely useless if you're learning anatomy.

I love e-book readers but to be perfectly honest, they're friggin' slow. Then again I'm thinking to buy a tablet for reading books, they're fast and have almost no limitations, but the glossy screen and blue light are exactly those features I'm trying to avoid. I'm waiting for the first tablet that is eye friendly and has a matt screen.

I wanted a paperer white but had to settle for a tablet hopefully the eye strain wont be a big issue.

Good books don't go into garbage. Junk mail does. Books keep value indefinite. "People grow more conscious about paper waste" -- what a BS! Trees are renewable. Chemical plants kill land forever! And how about electronic waste?

I am disappointed in this video. all TOO many videos do not address the stuff I am interested in. For instance, does the Kindle ONLY accepts ebooks that you got from Amazon? can it do stuff from my library? isn't the Kindle just a device that lets you buy stuff from amazon only? or not? I wish you had more of this.

Long story, if you want to read a book on a tablet by the e-reader If you want device that can stream videos, watch KZbin or game get the tablet.

HAHAHAHAHAHA So, as someone who works in a bookstore and have a great client base of a huge range of ages, this was interesting... And as a tablet owner and someone who thought, 'I'll run out today and buy a cheap ereader to read pdfs,text files, whatever...' I was DUMBFOUNDED!!!!!! The cost of a tablet - A TABLET!!! - with no real uses aside from being an ereader..... What the heck? I do not care about the longer battery life. I dont care about the eyestrain issues. I could care less that it may link to a library of books.... For something that should be $20 or so, JUST reading TEXT, PDFS, WHATEVER, and in BW.... What kook has over $100 for an ereader? Sure sure.. Many people get coaxed into it, But for folks that just want a thin, light, pdf, text reader... We need a new product.
@vamps_rock4 жыл бұрын
I think your eyes may well disagree with the 'I dont care about the eyestrain issues' when you have trouble reading anything! Plus, what technological device do you think you will get for $20 or so? THAT is a HAHAHAHAHAHA considering most hardback and manypaperback books cost more than that!

Not a big eco guy, but the introduction is rather narrow minded: A reader takes a LOT of resources and energy to produce, while printed versions are fairly easy to make and very easy to recycle. So in terms of being eco friendly, the only issue from buying paperbacks/hardcovers stems from transportation. When you compare that to a readers lifecycle, with a median of eight books a year(source: some article I found on the net, which seems like a good number), your reader becomes 'eco-friendly' after approx. 5y of use. (assuming the recycling process of one book is close to zero)

I'm considering to buy an ereader for technical books. But what about taking notes and highlighting, do e readers offer this functionality?
@mechkitten3 жыл бұрын
It lets you post quotes to social media, but the highlights won't have colors. I saw a colored e-ink reader somewhere and am searching for it for this exact reason.
@travishansen25982 жыл бұрын
Most e-readers do have the ability to take notes and highlight. You can't use colors for your highlights unless they are one of the few color e-ink readers on the market but the old school e-readers will highlight in a light gray. Note-taking is possible, but you have to do it with a touch keyboard unless you buy a premium device that supports that brands stylus.

I have both, but my ebook reader is slooooooow. And it is already about 12 years old. My tablet however can use al formats and is not bad for reading. But it is a lot heavier and yes...more distracting... Can't decide to buy a new reader or just read my books on the tablet. Books from Google's Play Books are very convenient...I can read a book on my tablet, stop, open the app on my phone and continue there...

Can the Kindle accept an outside, plug in source, to load other books. Or is it only web dependent?
@vrixphillips4 жыл бұрын
I bought a Samsung Galaxy after a LOT of thought and....... I never use it. I was gonna use it to mark up PDFs as I read them because I have a massive library of ebooks, but it's too big, the screen's too slick, and I couldn't seem to get used to it. Now my cousin uses it. Now I'm thinking about getting a smaller ereader.
