That's my laptop. Looks like the previous service even didn't try to re-solder the port. They just heated the motherboard and damaged plastic film. That's very sad as I paid 105 pounds for the previous repair. Thanks Sorin for his thorough work!

That is sad indeed. When you pay £40, you get (at most) a £40 repair. When you pay for the £80 repair, what assurance is there that you won't get a £40 repair anyway? That is the struggle. Everything depends on where you take it.

£105!! I would demand my money back and if they question it, show them this video.

There was flux on the other side of the board, so I do believe they took it out. But the port was still not resoldered properly. Maybe they used low melt solder (as Sorin suggested in the video) which can be brittle.

Nokia was king of this type of design with replaceable parts. I remember fixing many phones with just swapping parts when I was at high school. They should do this kind of designs again but money comes first for companies

Some advice on soldering ports for everyone, you should pre-heat slightly the pins on the port and the pins on the board after you put new solder on it, this doesn't only help accelerate the bonding, it ensures it becomes as good it can become and especially for the ports which have pins that are not in the "line of sight" of the heat gun (the ones usually beneath a port). And lastly, when you are applying new solder in the outer big pins for a connector (through-hole) which are usually either a ground or a holding spot for the connector, you don't need to create blobs of solder, that doesn't make it "perfect" as Sorin says (out of habit most of the time i would assume), what it does instead is that it adds more unneeded mass to that pin, making less reliable. What you should do instead is put enough flux/rosin, make sure you have enough heat on your soldering iron for solder to melt fast enough (within a few seconds), touch at least 4-5mm of the tip of your soldering iron for at least 5-6 secs on the the part you want to apply solder, then touch that part of the port you are heating up with the solder and let it take as much as it needs but not more (too much heat will melt it very fast tricking into thinking you've done it properly, but it's usually not the case especially if the pin itself isn't heated enough), then keep the soldering iron for another good 4-5 secs and you are likely done, you'll know as you will see, with enough amount of flux/rosin that the solder became a part of the pin uni formally and not like a blob (it's not that you can't still not have a properly soldered connector with more solder thus still have a blob of solder on it but if done fast and a blob of solder remains it's usually a bad solder and Sorin did this in this video a few times which is why i want to point it, because he seems to think from experience that if you have enough heat you can get away with it as long as it works in the moment, it will likely not last a lot or will break and strong movement shock which normally, if soldered as i mention above, likely wouldn't unless you exceed the maximum force needed for that anyway). This will ensure that solder went through the hole of the part/pin you want and that the reason the solder got stuck in it properly is because it itself was heated enough and "absorbed" the solder on its own and not the soldering iron, that's how you make proper, strong bonding which lasts for a long time. You make this a habit and you become very good at soldering, it takes like 20-30 times to perfect it at best for most people, as long as you have the right tools and materials.

Been waiting to see the guts on an X1 for a while. Well done, last one in there re-flowed through the kapton or through the case. I love that Leno has gone to captive screws for most product now.

I've never seen that plastic insulator having been melted before so only explanation is like you say, must have been done by a previous repair attempt. Lenovo/IBM laptops used to have their power jacks on a small lead so you could easily replace it and then they started soldering them in to the boards on the ones we have so nice to see on some models (why not all) that they are making them easier to replace as they must be one of the most common things to get damaged/worn out.

Yeah should be mandatory to put the usbc charging ports on replaceable daughter boards. USB C is really convenient but they are so tiny and up to 24 traces. They can't handle much abuse.

Hello Sorin, great job as you always have us used to. I find it a little easier to solder those connectors, leaving the gaps in the connector tabs free of tin so they don't move as much. Thanks, as always

The customer can't decide how much he will pay for a job. If it is £80, the customer must chose if wants it fixed or not. If you accept the customer's demands, what you are doing is desrespecting your job, you're passing the message that your work is worthless. A doctor or a lawyer charge alot of money, because it is also a message that their work has big value.

I Think Sorin is using black magic, or he has an on/off switch on the soldering iron, solder stays on the pad/board when he wants to and it goes back on the soldering iron when he doesn't want to stick on the pad/board:))))

Mostly usb-c cables with large plug that sticks out and gets a large lateral whack which wrecks the socket or the solder joint.

From my point of view, it is convenient for user, as you need only one connector for everything. For example, I connect external monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers and charger only via single USB-C port. So I don't need a lot of cables and I can use a single electricity socket for this setup. Another thing is that the reliability of this port is not as good as we would like :)

I never drop the price i give to someone who says i can only afford to give X.I tell them, its ok ,i will fix it for you and keep it in my shop for 2 months so you can have time to gather money.Either that, or i accept credit cards as well...If you perform an inferior repair because someone is chapo, you just ruin your name, since they wont "remember" the bargain if the machine fails again after a while.

My first thoughts when somebody refuses to pay accordingly for a good repair is: - They stole what they own. Because if they actually bought a good product and want to repair it, they wouldn't be acting like a swingler in a bidding competition.

i bought an asus k53sv sx582v laptop in 2011. There was an earthquake in Turkey. I haven't turned on the computer for 3 months. after a while, when I started making updates, the computer started contracting. it remained on the black screen. the laptop is working, but it won't turn on. i took out the hard drive. I put it on another laptop, it works smoothly. maybe I removed the Ram in case there might be a problem from the ram, cleaned it up and increased the ram capacity. still, it didn't open. i reset the video card. it still doesn't work. What can I do. could you please help me? I even got a new laptop battery. still, it didn't work. it stays on the black screen.
