There are plenty of computer myths out there about viruses, computer security, fixing computers, and anything else you can think of. But people continue to believe these myths and lies about computers for some reason. Some have to do with Windows, others with the internet and internet speed, and more. I go through what I think are the 10 most common computer myths and show the truth behind them.

Same, and it still can be necessary to eject even if you're not read/writing to a drive. IE: On one of my older machines, if I *don't eject,* when I plug cards back in I get asked to "scan card for errors" *every time.*

Most hardware, fine, install from the manufacturer's web site. There are 2 pieces of hardware where the installation is required. The internet connection and the motherboard. If either of these is not directly supported by your OS install disk, you will not be able to connect to the internet to download the most recent version.

Mine uses Freon, how often do I change that? LOL, but seriously, surely even this cooler needs to be changed every 20 years or so, it has to degrade, it has oil to lubricate the compressor. I should actually probably check this since I use phase cooling. I never got the point of oil cooling though, like sure it looks ok I guess, but what a pain for switching parts, mines bad enough making insulation for each card and sometimes special heaters. I wouldn't want it to be any slower of a process than it already is. I like to modify mine a lot, so when I get bored, it gets an air scoop or air ducting for the motherboard, or other special coolers designed for it. Oil cooling wouldn't leave much of an option other than decorations like a submarine or castle at the bottom. Maybe its just for people that like to "set it and forget it", but what's the fun in that?

Good minimal practice but you can still build up a charge while working (Chair rolling on the floor, clothes rubbing against each other…). ESD is *NOT* a myth. Why would manufacturers go out of their way to put components in antistatic bags if these weren’t needed ? They cut corners everywhere but not there ? Strange… In fact, ESD damage, while unlikely to completely kill your device/component these days, because engineers take all the coutermeasures they can at the design and manufacturing stages (protections, hardening, more grounding pins closer to the fragile parts…), can still affect both longevity and reliability. Because it’s so insidious, you’re likely to not notice immediately since the part will mostly function albeit probably out of spec and when the time comes for the part to fail, you will blame something else. In fact, countless bluescreening computers and RMA’d parts can be traced to having been mishandled somewhere along the line and having damages at the silicon level (pitting) either on the CPU, RAM or PCH. Unfortunately, you need a Scanning Electron Microscope to assess the damage and nobody takes the time to do this kind of post-mortem. We just replace the part with a new one and move on. The idiot (he called it!) in this video knows that his personal experience is enough to justify not wearing one and clearly doesn’t know enough on the matter to have an informed opinion. Search "esd damage electron microscope" in your favorite search engine to see what it makes to silicon components. It might change your mind.

Safely eject thumb drives, it is still needed. Windows will cache the files to the RAM before copy it to the thumb drive. Last time thumb drives has a flashing LED, but now, you can't be sure. You still need to, unless you are super sure (but then again, Windows 10 now auto defrag your thumb drive from time to time, so...). Installation CD is still recommended, because sometimes if your systems locked up (such as when formatting for OS installation), some drivers may not be available in the OS installation media. I've been through this often where people messed up with their drivers and their system couldn't connect to the Internet. So... It's good to have CDs as the final frontier options before condemn the whole systems. It may be outdated, but at least it can run before you find updates in the net. Java is an important tool. Some software use it because the software created by Java can be ported easily in multiple platform (Windows, Linux, Mac, and your Blu-Ray player and many of the Internet TV apps). Computer magicians (or whatever you like to call) do exist. The Internet can't solve your bad memory, intermittent connection, and probably your screen if it goes black altogether and the system just idling and not responding to any command as if there's motherboard failure. Yes, Internet is our guide, but that magic requires some troubleshooting. But above all else, very nice information. I don't say all are correct as YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary), but still, it is best to keep some of the old myth in practise (such as safely remove drives before unplugging it) just to be safe.

Safe eject usb drive was quite important in the USB 1.0 era. USB 1 was so slow that Windows 'buffers' the file copied to the USB where windows says it's 100% copied, but it's actually still writing. In fact it's 100% copied to the write buffer, but perhaps only 40% actually written to USB so you had to wait, even though it said 100% copied. Since USB got a lot faster from USB 2.0 and forward, this was no longer a problem as the drive could keep up with the writing speed.

Dario Volaric this is absolutely not true. I've written large disk images over USB 3, and still had to wait a couple minutes for sync to complete. The bottle neck is going to be writing to the cheap ass flash in your $5 flash drive and not the USB interconnect, especially if the drive needs to trim released space first.

he did specify in the USB 1.0 era, USB 1.0 was 12 mbits or about 1 MB per second, when the typical desktop HDD could manage about 30 MB per second at that time, the USB 2.0 era was 480 mbits or about 60 MB per second which is about the same speed as most desktop HDDs at that time, and faster than most laptop HDDS, so yes that issue was resolved with the arrival of USB 2 (with the exception of people using SSDs or RAID arrays)

10. I completely disagree with. When handling ESD sensitive parts one should always either use an ESD bag or wear an ESD wrist strap. Even if you or someone else has touched ESD sensitive parts many times without damage, there's that one time when something will get damaged. Also sometimes one doesn't necessarily feel the static electricity shock, yet enough voltage went through the board to damage something. Why take the chance? Just wear the wrist strap.

At my local outdoor flea market I can't count the times I've seen someone selling used motherboards, memory or cards and they just have them sitting on the concrete table no ESD protection at all. Even though some of it I could use I don't even bother because I don't know if it is any good now.

I think the main thing is that the anecdotal evidence of "I never fried anything" means nothing - ESD damage would often manifest in small strange errors years after they occurred, basically shortening the lifespan of the component, which means that even if you get ESD damage, you wouldn't know about it.

A former coworker (w/ multiple degrees in medical technology) had electronic hypochondria. If a computer was slow or did anything even slightly odd, she’d immediately start complaining about it having a virus, no matter the specific symptoms. The lab PCs used wireless mice. The batteries in hers died, so she wanted to use somebody else’s workstation to put in her results. She even called the hospital IT twice to fix it. At like 1 am. One of us figured out that the issue was the mouse. Replaced it in 10 min But the myth is that “If a computer is acting slightly slower than normal, it’s a virus.” “If I don’t understand something on a computer (like how to open or run simple programs/files), it means the computer has a virus.”

As far as wrist band goes, the issue is a difference in voltage potential. If you are neutral, and the computer is neutral, but the boxed CPU has static, you could still be in trouble with a simple wrist strap. You can accomplish the same thing as a wrist strap by touching the power supply side case, that grounds you to the computer. Still a voltage potential to the CPU though. But like you said, almost no one has had an issue with this.

Agreed. I've never had a component fail due to static electricity but it can pack quite a punch for delicate components. Especially bad in northern climes in the winter, where heating can make the air in the building very dry. Man-made fibers are better than they used to be, but you still need to be careful with carpeting and clothing. Best to discharge yourself on some grounded metal before poking around the innards of a computer or other electronic device. I generally have a few old computers around at any time. So I just plug one in (3 prong grounded plug) and touch the metal chassis before delving into the innards of a device (it doesn't need to be turned on, just plugged in). But any properly grounded bare metal (water pipe etc.) will do.

I have to say, for #4 - Installation discs, that there might be time when you do need them. One example. Even though you can download most drivers from the manufacturer's Website, try doing it without the driver installed for the network adapter. Yes, you do need internet to get them, but without the driver for the network card, you're screwed, unless the OS comes with the driver. Also, to install drivers, no matter where you get it from, it may still require you to insert the Windows disc, but in most cases, with modern computers, Windows installation may already be on your hard disk, in a separate partition.

Everyone knows that you shouldn't delete system32. The only reason you would ever want to modify the system32 folder would be to rename it to system64 to upgrade to a 64 bits system. But you don't really have to do that anymore, most system are sold already upgraded. Sometimes you have to pay extra though.

ThioJoe The main danger with static is not that you fry a component, but that you will weaken the system, which will eventually fail sooner than it would otherwise have done. My first job was as an aerospace component engineer. Someone had casually picked up a CMOS DIL component in the lab that I had put aside for constructional analysis, and I'd yelled at him for not wearing a wristband. He demanded that I test it, and I did. The chip checked out perfectly. However, the next stage was to crack the glass frit-seal and remove the ceramic lid. On inspecting the chip with a light microscope, I saw a dark spot on one of the traces. I then etched the "glassivation", the glass layer on top of the tracks, with a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and glycerol - very nasty stuff. I then gold sputter-coated the component and put it in the scanning electron microscope. I found the location of the spot and saw it was actually a crater in the trace. Using a clever trick called EBIC (electron beam induced current), I was able to send microamp pulses of electricity down specific traces (etching the glass doesn't eliminate it, it just highlights more detail, so the gold layer doesn't ruin the electrical performance of the device). The edges of the hole glowed brighter, and then the trace broke. This meant a transistor had died. The other transistors in the device would now all have to handle more current than normal, and weaker ones might fail. This would leave the rest to handle even more. This would go on until the device was dead. But in those days, the tiniest, weeniest trace width available was 1um (1000nm):.Modern device traces are in the 10-20 nanometre range, easily ten times smaller than when I was a component engineer. Modern electronics density is incredible: and also its sensitivity to ESD. I think that was bad advice, Joe. At least plug the computer into the mains and hold onto a metal part connected to earth. I still subscribed to your channel, though.

my friend this thing of the esd is something of incredible for me. let me explain please. if a chip or cpu or else is capeable of withstanding that current even the mobile cpu's have a battery of aroun 16volts up to 19 volts,so how can we humans with that little amount of electricity that we loose or throw into devices , how is it possible to make damage. I mean a boxer that stands a 30kg punch, how can a baby of a few kilos knock him to the ground? THANKS IN ADVANCE AND SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH.

@@Rayxxx19741 Generally, a discharge will have to be in excess of 3000 volts before you feel a discharge. So even if you don't feel a discharge, that doesn't mean you haven't introduced a hefty discharge into the system.

Agree on every point, especially the one about being regarded as a universal guru if you know anything about computers. People do indeed think you know everything when you in fact know something, when it comes to computer knowledge. BUT BUT BUT... It is a myth to say that not wearing anti static wristbands is ok. The myth is that electronics can be instantly destroyed by static discharge. Whilst sometimes true, the more common truth is that COMPUTERS CAN BE MADE INSTANTLY UNRELIABLE with static discharges. As an electronics engineer, I can tell you for a fact that chips do not always instantly die when exposed to high voltage discharge. Rather than 'sudden death', they are often made intermittently unreliable such that your machine might suddenly crash at random times without apparent cause. Having worked on complex hardware installations for years, I saw a pattern of this happening every time that certain engineers refused to take precautions about static.

In some cases I send it to other IT specialist that can figure it out, but other times I have been successful fixing something that has no fixture help online. Fixing a problem entirely on your own is risky and can cause even more damage. We take that risk.

I think the problem is that in windows the user is by default an admin, that why it is less secure. Also there have been cases were windows knew a security issue for over 3 month until they patched it, because they wanted to wait for the next patch cycle. Linux on the other hand you are not automatically admin, you have to enter an password first. Also the access rights of applications can be configured in more detail and the defaults are more strickt. Mac is checking if the app is certified. The advantage of the Windows way of dealing with security is that you can install everything and you will not have anything forbidding it. (I speak about Windows 7, I have no experience with Windows 10 and the advantages of Windows Defender).
@Vengir
@Vengir 7 жыл бұрын
I haven't encountered anything in Windows 10 that would forbid you installing anything that you could install in 7 (but then again, I'm not any pro or whatever). The one situation I encountered is the legal copy of GTA3 not working in 10 because a certain library needed for DRM was removed due to insecurity risk (downloading a crack fixed this problem).

People should avoid Java whenever possible. It's bloated, it's insecure, and it has no advantage over any other language. Everything it offers, another language does better. The best thing it has going for it is being a runtime machine, but it's not that useful since it isn't cross-compatible between CPU architectures.

I know most better computers will have a partition setup for that but how is that going to help you if you're installing new hardware?
