I grew up in this same neighborhood and played b-ball all the time at this park. It's kind of a trip seeing the different outcomes from all the kids in my neighborhood. I'm definitely the luckiest one. Put all my effort into school, and now I'm semester away from finishing law school. But somehow I never knew the history behind East LA and the crazy discrimination and brutalization of Mexicans for decades until this last semester. And he learned some of these basic things as a 5 year old from his grandpa from the gang. Just shows what kind things they show us in school. I didn't know about the rampant lynchings of Mexicans, how Texas Rangers and other police used to kill us at will to make property available to white settlers, how in the 1930s close to 2 million Mexicans were deported out of nowhere even though most were citizens, etc.

I also did a speech my freshman year at CSULA, for my communications class. It was about the “Greenlight Gangsters” the Maravilla hoods and how close they were to Csula. Which maravilla hood has Belvedere park? I used to skate there before I knew what maravilla was, but I always knew there were gangs or a gang that always hung around there. 5 or more years ago it used to be pretty bad and I don’t think it was really safe to skate there if you weren’t from over there.
