How does the train complete the electical circuit? Its clear where the power picks up from but not where it goes at the other end of the circuit. I've always wondered this as LU have two power rails yet other trains work only on one.

The running rail is the return path. Same as train with overhead power, there is only one cable. The return path is the rail itself.

for trams, how does the system work to protect (on ground) passers-by from not getting electrocuted is something unclear. as in, what is the mechanism to restrict electric flow during rains/moisture or movement of people or animals on track.
