Our last rescue for 2021 - number 606! It was a special bonus for the rescuers to finally catch this strong seal bull, he had evaded capture twice before. Breeding season had stopped the OCN rescuers from patrolling the seal colony, the newborn pups were too vulnerable to be disturbed by a rescue stampede. They had to use 2 rescue nets to finally capture this beautiful alpha male, but they were facing the next problem: they were only two rescuers, when the whole team usually would have been needed to deal with an animal this size. They wanted to try anyways, because the last rescue run took place several weeks before, and they were not sure if they would ever have a chance again to catch this particular animal. Seal bulls often stay at see for several weeks at a time once breeding season is over. The entanglement was old and must have caused a lot of pain, the seal tried hard to shake the rescuers off. The rescuers won this fight, and the seal went back to his girlfriends without his ugly plastic necklace. 🦭
