Mid 1920s. Ten demobilized Red Army soldiers, the commander of the frontier post with his wife and a geological scientist are driving through the Karakum desert to the railway station. On the way, they come across a dilapidated mosque with a disguised well in the courtyard, in which instead of water there is a machine gun. The commander guesses that he belongs to the Basmachs and decides to detain a gang led by the elusive Kurbashi Shirmat Khan.
