I loved the detail with Matthew Lillard's character, how throughout the film he's erratic and jumpy, prone to outbursts, and suffers a handful of mental breakdowns because of his visions. He literally never sits still because of his abilities. Then he dies. And when we see his spirit, he's finally calm and has a level expression on his face. All his life, his powers have pretty much tormented him, forcing him to see other people's trauma and share in it(which was presumably worse with the spirits) and now that he died, he's finally at peace. I like that detail with his character and Lillard performed it all very well

This is one of those horror films that would have probably been better as a TV series instead. Gives the backstories of the different ghosts a chance to take center stage and stick in your head. You could even have Arthur be recruited by his uncle during the hunts as a way to help with his financial troubles. Builds up the twist between him and Denis and makes the betrayal of his uncle actually have some weight.

Fun fact for 13th Ghost fans: Up until the uncle's final demise the First Born, the Torso, the Bound Woman, the Withered Lover, the Pilgimess, the Dire Mother, and the Great Child were harmless ghost (at least the Great Child was Harmless unless he thinks his mother is in any danger). It was only the Torn Prince, the Angry Princess, the Hammer, the Jackal and the Juggernaut that pose the real threat. But I guess since the uncle capture them and bound their souls against their will the ghost harbor enough rage against him that when release even most of the harmless ghost took it out on him.

Interesting facts about Thirteen Ghosts (2001) In the movie, the characters need special glasses to see the ghosts. In the original 13 Ghosts (1960), viewers needed special glasses to see the ghosts. This is one of the few details from the original that was kept. Herbert Duncanson, who plays The Hammer, was not originally hired as an actor for the film but as a stand-in for reference and test shots. When the original actor cast for the role never showed up, he was given the role of that ghost as a last-minute replacement, as there was no time to hold auditions for a recast. Duncan MacLeod's dragon katana from Highlander (1992) appears as one of the swords in Cyrus' collection. John DeSantis (Juggernaut) was gifted a finished life cast by the production after filming wrapped up, as a memento.

*FUN FACT* (in case anyone doesn't know) The following year, Matthew Lillard plays Shaggy in the two live action movies *_Scooby-Doo_* (2002) and its sequel *_Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed_* (2004), yet there was 1985 animated series several years earlier: The Thirteen Ghosts of Scooby-Doo with Vincent Price voiced Vincent Van Ghoul (bit a vampire and magician combination) And interestingly, before Thirteen Ghosts, the first movie Dark Castle Entertainment produced was House on Haunted Hill (1999) the remake of the original _House on Haunted Hill_ (1959) - that one starred Vincent Price 😏

The special features explaining the ghosts made this a favorite of my friends and I. I think we watched their stories more then the full movie. We memorized the stories because the ghost were the real stars! I could see them making a limited series of thirteen episodes exploring their back stories with the framing story of their capture as ghosts bringing them together. You could explore the characters like the uncle and his nephew more with the framing story and the thirteenth episode would be the house/machine with less running around and a better pay off since it is what they were working on the whole time.

All the ghosts’ backstories are online, but yeah I agree. The designs are all so freaking cool. And easily my favourite part of the film. I would love a Netflix pseudo reboot/prequel where we follow Dennis as he helps track down the ghosts, and we learn more about them. Maybe some have different levels of notoriety. For example, The Torn Prince is a local legend in his hometown, and seen as yet another talented person who lost his life too soon. Others, like The Juggernaut, are feared ghost stories. For cases like The Torso, their stories serve as cautionary tales. Idk, I feel like the stories of each of the ghosts were slept on. And I’d love for them to be established further.
