Our list is almost, the same as yours with the exception of our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription in the summer. Basically we buy shares in a local farm and every week we get a delivery of whatever is in season. Makes me be creative to use up whatever is delivered and it supports a small farmer. Probably not the cheapest way to buy vegetables but it is our way to buy local and support our farmer.

How do you buy shares in the CSA farm. Is it by becoming a member?
@RhondaLorch
@RhondaLorch 2 жыл бұрын
@@catseyes8377 Basically yes. We pay a share amount established by the farmer (about $500 in our case) and in return we get 10 weekly deliveries of enough veggies for a family of 4 along with a dozen eggs. It is picked the day it is delivered so really fresh.

I went through the comments and saw a couple that didn't agree with your lifestyle. I ticked off most of your list except for make up and my moisturiser is good old E45 cream. I enjoy saving as much as i can and tackling any issues for as little money as possible. I'm not saving for anything special but the thought of having money behind me in the form of savings gives me a stress free comfortable life. I don't need to spend to feel fulfilled with my life, like you I find the simple pleasures in life make me happy..it's nice to stop and smell the roses instead of competing with the rat race or keeping up with the Jonse's .Great vid Jane and Mike.

I hadn't really thought about it, but I don't buy any of the things you listed, either. Isn't it interesting that I still have a very rich life, own and use beautiful things. None of those things on your thoughtful list would add to my quality of life. I have plenty to do, I have more than I need. I can buy anything I need for my home, travel, or personal interests, but I keep all of that simple and uncomplicated. Learning what constitutes "enough" for my way of living, and making sure I meet my baseline for satisfaction and contentment, but not going beyond that, was important. Understanding my soul deep priorities took away a lot of superficial "wants." My personal "wealth" (which is more than just money), keeps expanding in unexpected ways, due to not wasting my resources. Thanks for helping put all of that life knowledge and useful, productive actions into perspective with your videos.

Well I was going to put up a comment but you've already said it all so well! 😊 I don't buy bottled water or magazines etc from an ecological viewpoint as much as anything. And I have switched from buying piles of cheap clothes (here in NZ we've made shabby clothes into an artform) to buying ONE or TWO really nice pieces in the sale. We never buy a brand new car.

Congratulations on a your lovely list. I read this as I got back from a hair cut, my first since March. I had to stop at Walgreens to pick up a prescription and bought chocolate and chips. I will soon be on my way to getting a pedicure. We will be leaving for a months's vacation in Florida. Your beginning list of items made me smile, because I was doing things you do not do. Truly though much of what you have on your list we, likewise, do. Your list is full of your own personal choices. What we do not buy is furniture. Much of what we have was given to us by relatives of that we bought used. As always you did another great job showing us how you live. Sue

Hi Jane and Mike great video as usual, making life so simple without the spending on such mindless items. I do serve fruit as a dessert though at the weekend only what is in season. You were right about no gluten free flour in the UK and so many othere items missing from the shelves in all shops. My goodness you are both super frugal . I found myself feeling a little disappointed about being not so frugal. I am sitting here justifying why I buy certain things but realise that its about keeping within my personal budget. A couple of things others have mentioned that I also do are never buying new cars or new furniture these days. I also no longer buy books new , but make use of the library more. I never buy disposable wipes , this is also about the environment.

This is a great list!! I have to say, though, that I couldn't go so long without some kind of chocolate, although I do try to restrict it to once a month. I've lost 190 pounds so far so I can have hip replacement surgery, so if I stick to my strict diet then a small amount of chocolate once a month is something to look forward to. Since I've lost all that weight I'm more interested in wearing more attractive clothes (doesn't have to be expensive) and some makeup (also not expensive). Before I didn't care how I looked but now I want to experiment frugally. I also have to have some smell goods. I love scented candles but I use them conservatively and I don't buy expensive candles. I also love scented lotions but I never buy them for myself.. In fact, everyone knows the best gifts to buy me for Christmas and birthdays are "smell-goods". Not that I expect gifts, but I'm easy to shop for. In reference to number 30, no sales, I wonder do you look at food sales ads to plan meals and shop when you need to or do you get whatever you want?

Hi, we use the words sales differently. Food is on offer or reduced. Americans call that on sale. The sales, in a English English is a noun, I am going to the sales. Shops selling furniture, electrical goods, clothing have periodic sales at predetermined times of the year. People go to them to look for bargains. We don’t, unless it coincided with something beyond repair or at the end of its life. Thanks for watching.

I used to pay for lawn mowing when I was working full time, but now that I am retired I do all yard work myself. Also, I never pay for car cleaning (washing,vacuuming) services. I do that myself Over the years I have bought my cars brand new ( when I became financially able to do so) and always have them services and maintained so that I have them at least 12 to 13 years. We went out for a lovely family dinner to celebrate my son qualifying as a chartered accountant. I wore a little black dress, black patent pumps and felt a million dollars. The evening was wonderful. My son hugged me and thanked me for taking the trouble to dress up for him and for looking beautiful. I will treasure the memories of that evening forever and wouldn't swap it for all the bargain shopping hauls in the world. For us, life is about memory investment. We don't spend profligately but rather where we feel it adds value to our life and to the lives of those we love. I don't understand why you'd live as some sort of hair shirted puritan if there is no aim or purpose at the end? Maybe you could share what your long term savings are for as that might help add context to your videos??

Fantastic video again. I also don't understand the "seasonal dress" or "seasonal home" trends. Think there is even a "colour trend" thing for each Christmas. Don't do any of this. I'm lucky to live rurally, so of I want to go seasonal, I just collect whatever I find when out walking. I also grow flowers, many come up year after year, so they decorate my house and also provide their own scent. I absolutely detest air fresheners and the like, our windows are open for a while every day, even in winter. Have a big win here as my OH loves fizzy drinks and sweets, but after showing him the weekly, then monthly, then annual cost of his habit - I rather cruelly also provided a total for the last 5 years - he switched to sparkling water and now just drinks tap water. I bake a lot to deal with any treats - for a sweet-toothed OH and teen son who doesn't stop growing! I also still have bath towels and a lot of bedding we bought when we first had our own home (1996). They are (mostly) still going strong and I have a sentimental attachment to them as I remember how we had to save to get anything for our first home together.

Yes Brenda, we buy toiletries as part of our supermarket budget. We do not eat dessert so we have a main meal with no first or second course. We don’t have cakes or treats all year round and I was using up Christmas supplies such as dates, ginger, brown sugar and fruit. I don’t make cheesecake, or puddings or buy ice-creams. We do make an exception if we are hosting guests and cooking dinner, then we might have fish or pate as a starter, a main course and a dessert. We socialize entirely at home or at the homes of friends, it’s good to offer a piece of cake or take a cake. Thanks for watching.

For me personally I've cut down on toilet rolls drastically. I cut up old flannels, hemmed them with a zig zag on the sewing machine stash them in a pretty box in the loo & use them instead. Pop them in the washing machine with towels & undies, job done.

I made it through the first 4 and decided that a life where I NEVER get a pedicure, an ice cold Coke and a takeaway pizza, with tiramisu for dessert is NOT the retirement I want, early and debt free or not! I'm frugal but I allow myself my pleasures! I do use Groupon and student salons, and always make it clear for those wanting to gift me something that I love spa days, date nights,etc. Which helps make it thrifty and budget friendly. Kudos to being able to live such a disciplined life and I'm glad it makes you happy!!! I need a few more pleasures-- and an iced latte! 😂 I'll work a few more years and drive my cars for 12-15 years, etc. And make my budget accommodate my loves! ❤️

Hi Alice, it’s not done out of discipline I can assure you. I don’t think, we should NOT do the things that we love or make us happy to save money. We actually don’t want to eat out, I hate make up, nail paint and banal chat In salons. It’s not sacrificing anything, it’s our choice. @@FrugalQueeninFrance to me it takes discipline to adhere to things so strictly, but I don't mean it in a bad way at all! I admire it, it's a trait I would do well to develop, whether it's called discipline or something else...I enjoy far too many creature comforts-- love a good pedi (but also have crippling arthritis that makes it hard for me to do my own nails, so I rationalize it that way! 😂) And I love a good creme brulee or Thai takeaway; I'm a bit indulgent- but I do follow a frugal, cash only budget with my savings maxed. I didn't mean my comment in a hateful way-- I ADMIRE that you can do these things. I may try to pick one to work on this next quarter and see if I can cut at least ONE item out of my own budget. Again, I pay you on the back-- I KNOW I couldn't do all of this, at least not now! Warmest wishes from Florida to you and your husband! Thanks for sharing!

That’s is a meal called teatime in the UK and late afternoon people might take tea with cake. Cake isn’t eaten after a bowl of casserole, roast potatoes and three types of vegetables as we’re full up. Also, cake is offered. To guests who drop by for tea. It would be utterly miserly to offer someone a cup of tea and no cake. So, British people don’t eat a piece of fruit cake, gingerbread or date slice as a dessert.

We started living really frugally and mindfully one year ago. Until then, we already did a lot right, but since then, a lot has changed. We no longer have our hair cut, we do it ourselves. No more meals out, no more visits to the cinema (Corona helped with that one :)), and so on. Today, we have checked how much we saved in this one year. I could not believe it! It's so much that I can say: I have never had so much money on my bank account before (I'm 44). You are a big inspiration for me and my husband!

At 44 you still have time to turn your life around and benefit from your frugality in your future life. I look at any money I save this money is money I will have for harder times. I know in retirement that my income will be halved so I know by saving today I will increase my income in retirement. I don’t go without now and I allocate money entertainment but I keep it with the allocated budget.

It was hard to come up with something we don't buy (which is why I watch your channel as I need to be far more frugal than I am). I did come up with two, though. We don't buy new furniture, except for mattresses, and we don't buy cars new. We research, and find the vehicle with the lowest miles and most reliability. It inevitably ends up being a Toyota. Good video Jane and Michael - very thought provoking. Thank you!

Thank for once again providing such informed and valuable advice. I was a habitual purchaser , feeling a little low go on treat yourself ….. not once a month but three or four times a week . Had to stop . Cold turkey was the only way . It certainly wasn’t easy as I am retired but with no debt but dwindling savings I needed all the encouragement I could find . Where did I find this…..? not friends, not family but your channel. I binge watch . With my morning cuppa I say “Good Morning Jane “ and I am set for the day. My life is calmer, richer and I have found joy in the simplest of pleasures…. Reading, walking ,lifting weights in my bathroom…..if it doesn’t cost money I am IN. The only piece of advice I can give is for people to look long and hard at their pension funds ….whatever you think you need to live on in retirement double or triple it. You are never too young to start. By the way I have stopped using my range cooker . Slow cooker . Small oven or microwave….the way to go . Thank you again you are so appreciated. I am more than surviving but then I only have myself to please 💕🥰💕 Bless you both 💕🥰💕

Great video, lots to think about. I've never had a new car. Right now I have a 2003 Honda Element with 250,000 miles on it . My brother is a mechanic, so he helps me keep it in tip top running shape. I don't wear expensive clothes around the house just warm ones this time of year. I do quilt and by the odd piece of fabric now and again. I also knit but I buy very little yarn. I love to knit scarfs, hats, and baby sweaters. Most the patterns are free online. I don't buy expensive cuts of meat but everything has gotten so expensive. I buy 2nd hand shoes on ebay. I only run the dish washer when it's full... same with the laundry. I do buy a few fuchsia starts, geraniums and annuals for my flower pots every spring. I cut flowers from my yard for bouquet 💐 on my table. So lot of cost cutting around my house. I don't feel deprived at all. I feel blessed with contentment. God bless you, for sharing your tips with us. 😉

I do pick up a lot of good ideas from you and definitely do try to follow them. I love your meal videos and have enjoyed making some of your recipes. It’s nice to see how people live in other countries. Interesting to see what food, housing and other things cost. The prices of most everything have shot up in the past two years. Rent has pretty much doubled, we are home owners so I consider myself very fortunate. Houses have gone up to 1 to 2 times what they were a couple years ago. Food prices are ridiculous!

I like towels that are thin and scratchy.. I do have an obsession with finding the right ones and I bought a lot of cheap, clearance ikea towels that were the cheapest ones, unbleached and thin.. I think they were around $4 aus each.. don’t regret them at all. Have enough to last me out. I can’t stand the feel of thick, plush towels, so I am not tempted there at all.. so, other towel obsession ladies, you are safe from me in the shops. I do like Laura Ashley bedding as it’s 100% cotton and I am guilty of buying several doona covers from eBay.. I can’t sleep well on anything that’s a polyester/cotton mix.. I buy most of the items in your list; however, many are very infrequent purchases. For example, I don't typically buy soda pop, but occasionally I get a taste for a ginger ale or a coca cola, do I will buy a small bottle and that satisfies me. I eat out/get takeout maybe once or twice monthly for a small amount. I pay for You Tube TV but I don't add on any movie channels or subscribe to Netflix or Amazon Prime. I only grocery shop every 2 weeks. I am disabled and rely on a delivery service to get my groceries. I shop at Walmart and pay an annual fee for unlimited free deliveries. I have found by shopping every other week I do save myself over $100/month and that really helps with the budget. I will usually need another gallon of milk in between but a neighbor is always kind to pick it up for me in between my shopping trips. Thanks for giving us so many things to consider eliminating or at least cutting way back on.

We have slways done our own housework, gardening etc. Many of our friends and family hire out all these services but we don’t live up to the Jonesses. We are now retired and rarely eat out. Again, many friends and family perceive this as strange, or cheap but we really enjoy our home cooked meals and like to stay away from noisy crowded restaurants.When we worked we took our lunch to work from dinner leftovers or homemade sandwiches. We live simply but a very satisfying, frugal, debt free, mortgage free life for which we are immensely grateful. We’ve met Guy, nice man. He is passionate but had no idea that people can’t afford a £16 free range organic chicken. We were given a tour of the whole operation when I was writing. I love listening to you. So far as I can tell, you and I live very similar financial lives. I used to spend more, but I was always a saver. Now that I'm medically retired and on Social Security Disability Income, which is very low, I'm basically on a no-spend rest of my life. I buy only the most minimal needs. I, too, keep using what I already have until it's totally used up and not fixable any more. Then, I figure out if I can still use any parts. Example: if a piece of clothing is too threadbare yo wear anymore,I cut out the parts that are not threadbare, and use those bits for something else, like baby and child clothing, napkins, place mats, table runners, sometimes wrapping cloth instead of wrapping paper, cleaning cloths, etc. I do that with everything. I might be a bit extreme in my approach, but I don't have money to spend anymore...well I do give myself a little pocket money, about $10 a month. I'm do used to not spending that I don't spend it, though. It warms my heart to hear that you and Mike live very similarly. My guess is that you're not extreme like I am, but we are certainly on the same wavelength!
