Summary:
Because the power of the Habsburg dynasty was very strong in Europe,
it caused dissatisfaction in many European countries.
After Bohemia converted to Calvinism and was affected by Dutch independence, Bohemia rebelled against the Holy Roman Empire in 1618 and threw three Catholic councillors out of the Prague palace window,
starting the 30-year war.

Europe didn't possess overseas territories at this time. Part of being a world war is involving all populated continents. I'd say the 7 years war was probably the first worldwide war with battles in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. But they didn't call it that. And I guess Australia was left out, so technically, 1 continent was left out.
