In the Ekantham series, I present here a hymn from the Tiruvarutpa - pAl kAttum oLivaNNa padiga maNi malayE - specially dear to me: it has been set to music by my Guru Padmabhushana P. S. Narayanaswamy.
Over the years, I came to know of yet another facet of him - his musical compositions. It was my privilege to know and learn closely from him many of his compositions. Learning these has inspired me endlessly and has provided me close insights into his musical acumen. In conversations with him, I realized that he has set to music, several compositions - Ashtapadis of Jayadeva, spiritual poetry of Sadashiva Brahmendra, Tarangams of Narayana Teertha, Mooka Pancha Shathi Stothram and Tiruvarutpa (sacred hymns of Ramalinga Adigal) to name a few.
Composition presented here is set in raga, Sama and tala, Khanda chapu. Sri PSN Sir approaches Sama from his fresh eyes, chiselling out a profile of the ragam unseen so far, so aptly embodying the lyrical beauty of the hymn to the lilt of five. In his own suggestive, creative way, he underscores the fact - until our eyes start seeing beyond the mundane, beauty continues to remain hidden.
