The Thuiruvullakkavu Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is a Hindu temple located in Cherpu of Thrissur district of Kerala. The deity is Lord Dharma Shastha in standing posture with arch and a bow. An enchanting shrine in the midst of a dense forest, a gusher of beneficent spirit-that was the temple of Thiruvullakkavu, centuries back. Lord Sastha, the presiding deity, as the divine protector of the whole village settlement, showered benediction on a cultured rave. He rode the boundaries of the settlement on His white charger; the pure, microcosmic soul. Full of devotion, the people reveled in the ineffable tenderness of Sastha. A peaceful refuge for the troubled soul that was Thiruvullakkavu.
Kavu is a throbbing beehive of spiritual activities today. Thousands bring their children to this well constructed temple for the initiation into the excitement of knowledge. A child which starts on the alphabets at Kavu is sure to become a scholar, the devotees believe. An unending stream of devotees flow to this temple on Vijaya Dasami, the most auspicious morning of the year for those who seek academic excellence.
Kavu is unique, Lord Sasta, the Thanthric texts assert, is a fiery deity, the divine Hunter who destroys the sinners and protects the virtuous. He is the personification of fierce, protective Love. But at Thiruvullakkavu, He blesses His children with enough wits to earn prosperity to the point of satiety. Later, they become wise enough to renounce it and seek the path of bliss. Verily, Thiruvullakkavu is THE ABODE OF WISDOM.
The Hindus celebrate the Navarathri festival spanning nine nights reverently. This represents the divine
fight of Mother Durga to subjugate the evil of ignorance. The tenth sunrise is the dawn of wisdom when
darkness flees in fear. This day, the Vijayadasami is an auspicious day in the one hundred and eight
Durga temples of Kerala where the devotees worship omniscience as Mother. The Devotees invoke
Mother Saraswathi and all, young and old have initiation by writing on sand spread our on the ground. At
Thiruvullakkavu, the presiding deity is Sastha, the virile Guide, and Omniscience as Father. The
Vijayadasamy is not very important in other Sastha temples, but at Kavu , it is the most auspicious day for
the initiation of education. Naturally it is the day of the greatest flow of devotees and thousands of children
have their initiation. The initiation can be done on any other day also; all days are auspicious at
Thiruvullakkavu. The Navarathri is a cultural extravaganza since the budding artists want to make their
debut at Kavu. Successful professionals also long to perform here during these auspicious days.More than 10,000 kids will be introduced to the world of letters at Thiruvullakkavu Sreedharmasastha Temple here on Vijayadasami which falls on Tuesday. The temple with sastha as its prime deity is one of the two temples in the state famous for the ‘ezhuthiniruthu’ ceremony, the other temple being Dakshina Mookambika Temple in Panachikkadu in Kottayam.

Vijayadasami is celebrated on the tenth day of annual
festival of Navaratri. (Vidyarambham ritual) in
Thiruvullakkavu temple is very famous in the district. It is the
Initiation into the world of letters for the children usually
begins with the writing of a mantra Om hari sri ganapathaye
namah on their tongue. The ritual involves the acharya
inscribing the words (manthra) Hari sree ganapathaye
namaha on the tongue of the children with a golden ring
which is to invoke the grace of the goddess of learning
Saraswati. Vijayadasami day is the day of the greatest flow.
Special poojas and ‘ezhuthiniruthal’ ceremony will begin at 4 a.m. at the Saraswathi Mandapam of the temple on Tuesday. The ceremony conducted by 50 acharyas will end by 2 p.m. and will again be held for one hour in the evening. Hundreds of students on Sunday evening brought their books to the temple for pooja and after the ‘adachu pooja’ on Monday, the books will be taken back home on Tuesday morning.
