I'm living alone for the first time and felt such pressure to achieve a minimalist aesthetic until I saw this video. I no lie went to the thrift store after watching this and bought everything that just made me happy. Thank you for the inspiration

Jenni Kaye so glad you did. minimalist can be great for. (ahem, minimal) function, sometimes, but such a limiting aesthetic. your solution was very wise. things don't have to be expensive, or hoarded. one finds one's own balance of joy and function. I hope you find even more joy in your surroundings. : )
@themodernhippie97365 жыл бұрын
Be yourself, express yourself. Minimalism is about not conforming to consumerism. Not about not having things. IMO those hardcore minimalist type simply don’t have anything interesting to show or express the,selves. If your an artist be an artist.

So confused by all the negative and downright angry comments on this page. "He should have his eyes gouged out" from user JacksonPolyp - really, dude? And countless others saying they would never live a style like this...that's cool. Good thing this video's not about you! Really strange how people can get worked up over some color and hand crafted furniture. I'm sorry some of you seem to live bitter and close-minded lives, and I hope you find peace. NY Mag, I don't need hundreds of videos on minimalism, I would love more content in this direction! ANYWAY, this apartment is a dream! This reminds me how I loved to fantasize about how to transform my militant college dorm room into a more intentional space I could truly call my own, beyond the standard school furniture and some pictures on the walls. (It was always a challenge and I was always lazy.) I just finished undergrad and will hopefully be finding my own place soon. Doug definitely inspires me to think big! I love his discerning eye.

This is so cool, I couldn't even conceive thinking up a house like this! We are so conditioned to having traditional households when really we could just live vicariously through cool wallpapers or installations in our own homes, truly making them *our* spaces. Wow, SWOON, that was such a sweet little trip of whimsy, not even gonna bother reading the criticisms. Magical home and wouldn’t we all be so lucky to have such a strong and unique vision?! Imagine a world where everyone has a distinct perspective and the ability to execute it? If only we could all be so actualized! So it’s not your cup of tea? Cool, don’t live there, don’t emulate it, but to dismiss the wonder of it all is a tragedy of blindness. Edit, because I’m human I read the critiques, and you know what they say about opinions and assholes? Well, that!! But really, I get why someone wouldn’t choose to live there but it tickled every fancy I knew I had and some I was unaware of! The white lucite wall tiles, the aqua and pink painting, the RUG, the blue mirrored surfaces, and the TEXTURES!! I’m done being in my greige era, in my twenties I was all color all the time then MY THIRTIES had me thinking ‘neutral! safe! pleasant! everything matches! practical!’ Well, I’m About to be 41 and I think this new house is going to be a rewashing of color and outsider art FUN! I feel like my soul just drank and like an amnesiac returning to their persona I realize what I’ve been missing. This video may prove to be a pivotal moment. Such gratitude!! I had no idea, this is wonderful and he is a gift and y’all are a gift and for whatever reason THIS is what the doctor ordered 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻

Yes!!! Well said. How goes the dream of creating your own version?
@KateCarew3 жыл бұрын
@@SKCothrenArt I’m living in a circus of color!! The house is walls of windows awash with light! I went HAM with color and we are currently adding on an addition with a “great room” basement storage area and YIKES indoor pool with greenhouse, the plants are doing the heavy lifting decor wise out there and it’s shaping up into a bit of an anthropology type space but I’m certain my color habits are going to start creeping in. The blank slate starts out “serene, neutral, rustic with all types of natural elements” but my penchant for garish and dare I say tacky tchotchkes is going to infiltrate. 😂 Today I hung a series of blown glass fried eggs on the wall in the new powder room and thought “here we go! Let the games begin!” Literally looking at these dryer lint dolls I made and figuring out how to arrange them on the shelf. Dryer lint that’s been color coordinated. I’d dye muslins for other fabric projects and I started gathering the dryer lint when it would be vibrantly colored and due to a bit (understatement) of an OCD I ended up with about 100 gallon ziplocks of dryer lint, so I began the process of trying to felt it, used starch and threads, legumes, feathers...you know just nature junk and have a little army of vividly colored dolls. They’re tacky, they’re cheap, they’re made of literal trash but that’s kind of my aesthetic. A chewing gum sculpture adorns my mantle that’s got a framed Hermès scarf over it. High low right?? In my twenties I was very VERY type A, acquired a lot of heavy antiques and created this beautiful home, colorful yes, but much more subdued, autumnal colors, reds, umbers, sage...a navy room, a pink bath and lavender master (very mellow though) left that partnership and segued into my thirties and placed bigger importance on comfort and neutrality which defied my nature. It was BLAH, working at hospice just wanted to come home and have it be clean...easy...manageable. Forties hit and the stifled spirit shit is REAL. Past few years have been a total relinquishment to truest nature and my partner thankfully has no opinions about decor and likes whatever I do. He bought me the fried eggs, and has zero expectations beyond “be happy”. Let me clarify too, the addition was possible because we are related to a contractor and did much of it ourselves...we also paid nothing for the house...a pittance so I want to make sure I don’t read as wealthy because we aren’t! I’m a nurse and my partner is an electrician. Very middle class. The Hermès was a gift to myself for getting the dream house, it’s definitely not for wearing, it’s a display piece and I bought it for the new price not collectors. $300-$400?!? This link shows you a similar version, mine has more colors and is one of the first pressings, anyhow, it set the tone for my decor and the house in general 😂 this was my most expensive purchase decor wise ever and truly what fueled the madness. www.ebay.com/itm/Hermes-Silk-100-Scarf-Animapolis-Multicolor-With-Box-72570X-B-Second-Ha-No-92423-/353340134883?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292

@@KateCarew OMG can I relate to ALL of those transitions in life and decor! In my 40s too and it's so liberating ;). I love that you're living the dream and the scarf is a fantastic inspiration. My art has always been my saving grace - a space where I have expressed every last emotion in color, layers of textures and shapes. Now it's extending into sculpture-paintings on boxes that are "design sets" for buildings, rooms, walls, furnishings, etc. Here's an example from the Walls I Want To See In the World. twitter.com/SK_Experience/status/1352707566099292160?s=19 I think the lint art idea sounds intriguing! Collecting (um...hoarding) boxes myself these days...Matt (partner of 6 years) said yesterday, "It's sad to think of all of those cereal boxes we've wasted!" 😄🤣
@KateCarew3 жыл бұрын
@@SKCothrenArt funny how you also “collect” I’ll admit it, I’m a hoarder The house wasn’t too small, and I’m not willing to give things up! And when you start making art with cast offs it piles up FAST. The home has no basement, but we added one under the addition and I figured workout equipment, boxes and work space, a his and hers...well mine is just FULL of boxes of god only knows what...packing materials! I know a woman, she’s an outsider artist, 95, she grew up in the Great Depression in rural West Virginia...daughter of immigrants a very tough live. Daddy was killed in the coal mines and mom who spoke no English gave birth to the 10th child after he passed...well, she has been inspiring me for decades. Gum wrappers, pistachio shells...all these things that I felt an affinity for but couldn’t justify keeping? Yeah, she urged me on and taught me to look at things with fresh eyes. She uses packing materials like someone would use silk or bronze. The most humble things become beauty in her hands. We were trying to get her set up with a curator and exhibit because she’s totally unknown and my friend who worked at the MoMa passed photos along etc and her family balked because she’s got dementia. Sucks, I think the way she prizes the cast offs is so valuable for everyone. Make art more democratic and accessible. I love your colors, thank you much for sharing, and I’m currently backing out of a Twitter dispute with someone from Poland who clearly doesn’t like Jews and as a Jew I opened my dumb Jew face so don’t judge my Twitter on those most recent tweets 😅😂🥺😳 I can be more fun than THAT.
