This simple mind trick will help our mind use our EYES in the most effective way possible.
In baseball we put all this thought into the mechanics but rarely give the mental game the attention it deserves. Through College there wasn’t that big of a physical difference between most players, but there WAS a huge difference between performance.
If you want to improve your plate discipline or teach your players how to improve their plate discipline, listen up, I got you.
Plate discipline is all about our EYES…
So how do we most effectively use our eyes?
Some of us have great vision, I have 20/10 vision and that definitely helps. But what I’m about to share with you does not require you have perfect vision.
This simple 3 step process will help our mind use our EYES in the most effective way possible.
Here it goes:
Step 1: ON DECK: Find the pitchers release point. When you are in the dugout and on deck, find the pitchers release point and memorize where that ball is coming out of the pitchers hand. This information will help us later on when we step up to the plate. So step one, is LOCATE THE PITCHERS RELEASE POINT.
Step 2: AT BAT - PRE-PITCH: Okay, now we are in the box but he hasn’t pitched yet. Many hitters kind of generally look at the pitcher, and if this works for you, then great, keep doing it. BUT In my experience, I only have about an 8 second attention span of peak focus. When I say peak focus, I mean I am completely and entirely locked in and everything else fades away. If a pitcher is taking his time and I’m trying to have peak focus for 20 seconds, I will lose my sharpness by the time the ball is pitched. I recommend we relax our eyes pre-pitch. Either find a spot out in the outfield to generally look at, or, you can stare into the pitchers eyes for the intimidation factor. Whatever we do pre-pitch, I recommend we relax the eyes and don’t use our peak focus just yet. So Step 2 is RELAX YOUR EYES
Step 3: AT BAT, DURING PITCH: Once the pitcher is beginning his movement, it is now showtime. Lock in your peak focus. But don’t just lock in your focus anywhere… Remember when you were on deck and you were picking up the pitcher's release point? Okay, when the pitcher begins his motion from the stretch or the windup… Lock in your peak focus on THAT SPOT where he is going to release the ball. In my experience, locking in my focus on the pitcher's release point helped me see the ball just a split second earlier which is sometimes all that it takes. Every millisecond counts in baseball, and if you are looking to improve your pitch selection and contact, then try out this 3 step process.
