I have the 5/8 wave Sirio standard tunable 10/11 meter ground plane. This one has an adjustable top hat for tuning and 3 long radials. They are around $100. I'm using this until I get my hex beam But it's a really good antenna. I've made contacts all over the world with it on 10 meters with only 200watts. Studying for my general ticket and will get the hex beam up by the time I'm legal for all the other bands.

I had a Sigma 4 in the UK, absolutely massive aerial...worked no better than a cheap 5/8wave vertical with no ground planes. I got a far better range on the 5/8 wave silver road on a 10ft pole hammered in to the garden compared with a Sigma 4 on a 20ft pole on a house. Both fed with RG58U in those days as we didn't know any better. The silver rod was hit by lightning and the top 3 sections vanished, plus there was a strong ozone smell on the grass.

I have had 2 of the Megarang 827 antennas myself, 2 of my best antennas. Tip replace the screws at the top parts with clamps. Screws wear out the aluminum by moving the antenna, it then sinks 1,2,3 cm until a part collapses or slides in.

The metal roof certainly doing the heavy lifting giving the vertical antenna a really good reflection. Being elevated certainly helps as well because as we all know "height is might". The combination of the two probably makes this antenna a stellar performer.

I've had an 827 up for 14 years - it was tuned to 11m for years but SWR crept up eventually - cause was on the top 3 sections, the screw holes elongated an inch on the 3rd section where it joins to the 4th section, after taking it down for repair, I cut slits in the ends and used Jubilee Clips/Hose Clips and aluminium grease, put it back together and re-tuned it to 10m - with the rig internal tuner on just the mini 8 coax, it matches up on 6, 11, 12, 15, 17, 20 & 30m - some times it will match on 40 and sometimes it wont? - it's also usable on 2m. Mines just 9 feet off the ground, in the back garden surrounded by houses but like 30 or more yards North, 60 yards East & 200+ West from the antenna and just 10 yards space towards the South, and on FT4/8 I've hit Australia, Argentina/South America, Falkland Islands and as far west as California from the UK to name a few, I think it's a superb antenna. It was £119 when I bought it and even today it's around the same price in the UK :)

Haden, I can't speak personally about that antenna, but I know two people that have used them with superb results, but both have suffered broken radials on several occasions and that is with the ring. Don't know if it was fatigue or the cocky's but I have heard the radials vibrate in wind. What I can say is, I bought two Sirio 2016 antennas like you at great expense and even more ridiculous freight charges but are the best 10/11 vertical I've tried hands down. I do have a 4 element Sirio Yagi to go up on me mast when I get round to finishing it and can't wait to try it coz I've never experienced a Yagi yet.

The Sirio 827 does incorporate some of the latest antenna theory, compared to some older CB antennas designs. The full length 5/8 wave gives about the lowest angle possible and doesn't need a top hat, nor is one desired. On shorter antennas, a top hat can raise the current high on the antenna, to make it act a bit like a longer antenna, but any longer than the 827 and the pattern starts to split off at high angles. The multi-turn matching coil acts somewhat like an RF choke, compared to the old single loop matching coil. The 8 eighth wave ground radials are supposed to be more effective than 4 quarter wave radials and the radials also help to isolate the feed line from RF radiation. I doubt the ferrite bead RF choke is needed on the feed line. Unlike the other Sirio antennas, the 827 has fairly heavy construction, compared to the lighter ones. The matching coil and radials really help to expand the SWR frequency range of the antenna. The Sirio 2016 is lighter weight, slightly shorter, with a top hat and has a lower wind load, but is not as strongly constructed.
