I'm the original owner of a 2001 Tundra at 250K miles. I have the common Drive light out, and the tailgate handle broke too. Other things are valve cover leakage, had the radiator replaced (Vegas heat is brutal), front and rear shocks replaced. Been having batteries die on me so I think my alternator needs to be replaced soon. Love this truck, and try to keep it in shape. God bless my fellow brothers in Christ. Hopefully he will be back soon before my truck gives out :)

Love my 2000 SR5 4x4, had it for closing on a year, was my older brothers work truck. Still holds up great, done basic maintenance and added a few mods but that’s it. Only things I can think of that went wrong is the light for the drive gear on the gage display went out, the paint need to be done soon, and the door closers are old so the door don’t stay open if you on a slope. Love these trucks, when I eventually drive the wheels of this one, my next truck will definitely be a tundra as well.

My tailgate handle was half broke up until a year and a half ago. Just make sure if you replace it, get the OEM that goes for around $100. The cheapie ones are just as effective as a broken handle. Other than both rear wheel bearings going out, I have had no real problems with my old Girl. However, my AC compressor has just gone out on me, hence me in here digging around for any You Tube help I can find. I am going to tackle the problem myself. So, if you are still offering prayers, say a little one for me because the expansion valve is behind the dash. What a stupid place to put it, thanks Toyota LOL

Interesting, and good to hear. I bought my 2000 Limited new in May of 2000. It now has 213,000 miles. I was planning to replace it this year but have recently changed my mind. The price of new trucks is insane. Just had new tires installed on it, had the rear sliding window replaced with solid glass , and purchased a timing belt, water pump, brakes, and a few other things I will install. I’ve also been checking into the price of a good paint job: yikes! But I’m going to have it painted. It needs a radio as the cd changer died this past year. Any recommendations? BTW, this truck makes me smile every time I drive it. Still.

I would recommend a current 3rd Gen Tacoma if you want a similar size. The Tacoma is a little smaller, but it’s very reliable and it is zippy. Out of all the trucks I’ve driven it’s the most similar to the 1st Gen Tundra in my opinion. I drive my brothers 00’ Tundra quite a bit and it’s just as comfortable. The Tundra’s windshield is a little bigger though. Or see if you can get a deal on a 20’ or 21’ Tundra before the body change, those are very reliable but gigantic trucks. New F-150’s drive like sporty sedans and are also very comfy if you like that feel. Silverado’s look cool but I do not trust the current reliability based on a lot of comments of gotten. The Ram’s are in the middle. And Nissan’s are fine! But they are too pricey, I’d definitely rate them higher if they were actually cheaper. For the same price a Tundra or F-150 is the way to go, more features and better reliability

I have an 04 Tundra 4X2 with the 3.4 V6 with at the time of typing an easy 106k miles and is also an amazing engine. It was garage kept and taken very good care of by my grandfather who then gifted it to me when he could no longer climb in and out of it. What I've learned about Toyota and its reliability and the number of Tacoma's my father has had over the years that have gone over 250k apiece and they all sold for quite a bit too is that it will continue to go down the road for a long time with minimal maintenance. As long as the frame is solid and free of rust too. My map light broke as well in the same manner. Arguably the best truck on the road today and yesterday.

8:02 the tailgate breaks a lot The grill The key thing happened to me but another thing that almost happened to me is the ball joints are also the Aquiles heel for these truck, I noticed the front wheels looking like they had negative camber so I changed the joints and apparently it’s a common problem apart from the frame (I live in Texas) mines fine Edit 9:50 that’s also a common thing since the light is constantly on it goes out Another thing if both low beams burnout or you install LEDs the high beams turn on when you have fog lights activated (if any) instead of the fog lights so if that happens either change the bulb or put a load resistor on the LEDs Edit #3 if the starter gives up it’s under the intake manifold idk why it’s there

O/D switch on gear select lever had disco'd and upon doing the inspection post YT DIY fix I found it had apparently happened to the previous owner b4 me... The wire does get fail once it appears out that hollow lever after it has desended down and out the lever. Mine was repaired at that common breaking point once already and taped back into a working switch, I noticed... this time though the problem was a little farther down the circuit line but it was a quick fix as the connector under the wheel had seperated, I fully disengaged both bits and then reconnected and that did the trick. The tilt wheel feature I'd bet is the reason for this so be gentle when doing the tilt, don't just let it pop on its own kind of help it to move with a hand on the wheel. This may also cause the ignition key retention issue, tilt wheel-itis. BTW my TUNDRA had a replacement tailgate when I bought it, (?) can't say why... but one wonders if a previous owner just tossed the original with the bath water when the handle failed and at a salvage yard found its replacement, though a different color, silver v gold. Also the funny thing about the 'D' nonillumination thing, I thought it was done on purpose so that when driving along at night there wouldn't be an annoying light staring at you the whole night long... this video tells me othrwise. LOL

Hebrews 13:6. That’s good, it’s one that’s not so well-known. Anyone can throw 3:16 out there but I’m glad to see that you read the whole thing. Great video btw.

Might want to remind you college buddy/owner that if that belt squeak is the timing belt the engine could be destroyed if it breaks (interference engine). Also you probably missed that your buddy did not have his seat belt on ;-(

Hey mate, Thank you for posting this video. I am a fan of Toyota in general and a Land Cruiser FJ40 and FJ80 in particular. I have been watching too many videos about Toyota Tundras and Sequoias which are not known too much in my country. I admit that I have been admired by them, so I recently have decided to try the 1st generation of both of them because of the good opinion I hear from people who owned them, so I have a question about buying vehicles from Pennsylvania, are they clean enough or rusty and corroded in the chassis as other vehicles in other salty States near buy such as NY, CT, … etc? Thank you

Awesome video. I had a Lexus that had the key stick problem so I sprayed some lube on the key and put it in a few times and hasn’t stuck since. Hope that helps

The key in my old tacoma used to get stuck in the igniton. I sprayed a little jaymores "like wd40 without the smell" in the ignition and on the key. Stuck the key in and out about 20 times and it never happened again.

2000, 85k miles, d light, clock, new KYB shocks, 2x rotors, 4x cans of Ozium cuz Toyota=gaps in vent screens and blended mice in heater, no rust cuz CA, should get timing belt. Worst is 2wd = 1wd in mud, lights terrible and need refurb.

Firstly l live in Australia and we do have the Tundra in very small numbers they have to be right hand drive but these are called utes even the larger utes from the USA are still refered to as utes and we get the Toyota Hilux the biggest selling vehicle in Australia from the base workmate rwd 4 cylinder to the 4X4 having a turbo V6 diesel now in the year 2000 the Hilux was a basic rwd 4 cylinder petrol but a very 4X4 with a V6 petrol was available now my 1997 Hilux is the basic spec although the one l have came with a couple of options air conditioning which works and criuse control which doesn't work that was a very rare option l tried to research it but l was watching a video on a Toyota Tercel and it had non working cruise control and it was an option on them now my Hilux us a single cab with an aluminum tray very popular on utes and no rust issues infact my Hilux doesn't have any rust issues and been a 1997 it came with the 22R motor which l am so happy and the configuration of my hilux is the most desirable and l paid 4 years ago aud $1500 for it but when l bought it l didn't realise how good they are well l bought with 400000kms on it and once l did some research on how good they are but because they are so good mine is now worth aud $5000 to $6000 and one sold for $10000 but a 1997 Hilux sold for $500 why it had done 980000kms which is about 590000 miles and the seller had people lining up to buy it because they are so reliable and simple the 1997 hilux petrol is extremely analog no efi a carburetor which the one on mine is the original one a cam chain on mine hasn't stretched no computers no cat converter which will see it do easily another 430000kms

The only thing that stops them from getting to 400k is the frame. aif you drive it in the road salt belt it wont be good, my 02 has been garaged for 3 winters, frame treated by dealer, I run a awd subaru in winter in a salt state. Seen up close a collapsed tundra frame in the bone yard.
